3 Replies and 6570 Views Shannon Wright  6570  3 Started by  aidan Last night I was at a concert by a US singer-songer called Shannon Wright www.myspace.com/shannonwright. I reckon she has a low profile in Ireland but a sizeable cult following here in 'ooh-la-la'-land. I hadn't heard much from her: friends of mine rave about her so out of curiosity I went along. Her songs are dark folk-rock with a hint of blues, where the tunes are quite subtle and must be caught attentively. She sings loud and deep and clear, with lots of emotion but never showboating. She play...

4 Replies and 4484 Views Neil Young at the 02  4484  4 Started by  NickWray Opening act on the night was Villagers, who set up in the cramped space between stage front and Neil Young's mammoth set-up of amps, pianos organs and various noise making devices. They seemed comfortable in front of such a massive crowd, Conor O'Brien howling and crooning a passion that was soon to be echoed by ol' Shakey himself. Young and his band pulled no punches, opening up with the crushing Hey Hey, My My. Rock and roll will never die indeed. I envied those who were standing u...

0 Replies and 3048 Views NOFX in the Olympia  3048  0 Started by  whiterob81 Was at this on Saturday night. They were fecking amazing. I've heard they're hit and miss but I obviously caught them on a really good night. It seemed like they were trying to make up for the fact that they hadn't played in 5 years and that gig was meant to have been crap. They played the full 20 minute version of the Decline which sounded deadly

Poor Somadrone, a great set but it just fell dead... Was anybody one of those few others there

0 Replies and 2987 Views Fight Like Apes - Leed's Cockpit  2987  0 Started by  PeterQuaife as a rule which I don't enforce, but which sort of fogs my brain, I am not really a fan of female lead singers, with the exceptions of yer one from Alphastates and of course Alison Moyet...and if my hand was forced I'd would inc the moody one, now turned writer(!) from Sleeper, but thats cause I was a randy teenager and impure thoughts invaded my brain more than algebra or Peg.. but MayKay is something else, tonnage of energy, great presence...Pockets using the ceiling as a drum at one s...

0 Replies and 3449 Views The JK Ensemble Session, The Button Factory  3449  0 Started by  floodzer Was at this last night. It was a nice, conservative gig. Performing were Bill Carrothers with Kevin Brady and Dave Redmond (Brilliant), Carly Sings (Meh) & the Callino Quartet, Chequerboard (Some nice tunes, some a little repetitive), Ensemble ICC (fantastic) and The Jimmy Cake (bit of a let down, but that was down to the set so Im told). Good crowd there. It was in celebration of John Kellys radio show's 2nd Anniversary. I reckon he could do a monthly gig and he'd continue to get the numbers if...

0 Replies and 2857 Views Introduction to Dubstep in the Iveagh Gardens  2857  0 Started by  whiterob81 Was at this on Firday. It was alright. Some deadly tunes but kind of ruined by Skream stopping the tunes every couple of minutes to shout drunken nonsense. He was really hammered. But then so was i by the end of it. Never been to a Dubstep night before but was surprised at how well the music works in a club setting. does anyone know if those dustep nights are still on in traffic Wouldn't mind checking one out

1 Replies and 4612 Views Electric Picnic - Your High/Low Points  4612  1 Started by  floodzer Favourite gig had to be Wilco. They were fan-bloody tastic as always, although it was a real shame they only had an hour set, maybe less Other highlights include Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, who put on a whopper set, entertaining me throughout despite not knowing one tune as I'm a relatively new Bright Eyes fan. Also enjoyed what I saw of Elbow from the back of the tent and loved Cathy Davey too! Lastly, I very much enjoyed Henry Rollins' spoken word set! I'm sure there will...

10 Replies and 4173 Views Metallica at Marlay Park  4173  10 Started by  whiterob81 Was at this gig last night. Thought they put on a great show etc. but the whole thing was ruined by trying to get to and from the event. An hour and a half of a bus journey from the city centre after which there was half an hour of a queue to get into the venue because they only seemed to have one entrance open. Then when the thing ended we waited around for as long as we could before going to get the bus back into town. we had to queue for an hour to get the bus back in. they erec...

1 Replies and 3805 Views Low - Andrew's Lane Theatre  3805  1 Started by  dermot_trellis Anyone here go along to the Future Days gig last night Low were tremendous, a surprisingly ferocious set, scarily intense in a couple of places. Alan Sparhawk screaming into the pickups of his guitar isn't something I ever thought I'd see.. Atlas Sound was a bit disappointing, too much vague ambience that never really cohered into anything substantial, plus he was practically invisible crouched down over his gear (EDIT- apparently he was sick with bronchitis, so this might explain the subdued p...
