My biggest Spinal Tap moment was in Crawdaddy - we'd the Ultra Montanes playing with us & I was in the bar talking to their singer, Rory. We were heading backstage, but couldn't get in no matter how hard we pushed the door... after 5 mins of trying, the door opened out TOWARDS us... never thought of actually trying to pull it instead of pushing. He turned to me and said.. "Jesus, you'd swear we were drummers!"

Then later on I gave out to the soundman for having no sound when it got my guitar bit. He came onstage, checked all the leads & connections, which were fine, then said "have you got the volume on your guitar turned up?" DOH!

This month we are currently listening to Spinal Tap (it appears!)... excerpt of an interview from The Observer
The Observer:
Ricky Gervais told me there's a story that Liam thinks Spinal Tap are a real band. Is that true?
Noel Gallagher:
Yeah, he thought they were real people. We went to see them play in Carnegie Hall. Before they played, they came on as three folk singers from the film A Mighty Wind. We were laughing and he said: 'This is s**t'. We said: 'No, those three are in Spinal Tap. You do know they are American actors?'
'They're not even a real band?' 'They're not even English! One of them is married to Jamie Lee Curtis.' 'I'm not f**kin' 'avin that,' he says, and walks off right up the middle of Carnegie Hall. He's never watched Spinal Tap since. He'd seen the film and loved it and thought they were a real band.

i'm not sure i listen to all obscure stuff... i have just seriously gone off "indie" bands in the past few years... or at least the type of indie-rock bands that are your standard four or five piece with a driving 4/4 rythym section... i'm spending more time with (WARNING: some horrible genre names arriving) avant-folk, experimental, minimalist, jazz, indie-pop (of the highly melodic and lovely lyric type; camera obscura, herman dune etc...), drone, noise, left-field alternative rock (e.g. sonic youth, deerhoof etc..) but also a lot of time with just good americana type singer-songwriters such as will oldham, bill callahan, jason molina, ali roberts. i listen to less electronica these days for some reason... (i am going to try ellen allien on your recommendation) thank you for asking... it gave me an excuse to s**te on about what i like... |

you seem to get through more music than anyone i've ever heard of........and i've heard of maybe 5% of it........incredible

you seem to get through more music than anyone i've ever heard of........and i've heard of maybe 5% of it........incredible funny that... how some people can form completely the wrong opinions... i don't work in music no, and actually have a very busy life, not least with a family to look after... i probably only manage to listen to two albums a day (i always listen to albums), one of which would be in the car and the other on headphones once the kids are in bed... i usually buy music on spec without having heard it previously... i have just become very adept at detailed research from sources i trust (including friends)... i do make some mistakes but i know what i don't like so can usually avoid it... |

Fair enough Ally, not having a go, I was just wondering if you ever go "to hell with it, today I'm listening to "The Best of Blondie" or something.  Ellen Allien, isn't really "electronica" in the noodling round with a laptop sense , it's proper full on Techno/Electro in the 12" single sense (yeah, I know, I'm getting genre obsessed again, but I hate people to confuse her with the nerds). You might not be into it if undiluted dance music isn't your thing, it is what it is, but give it a spin anyway, no harm, you might like it. Thom Yorkes a big fan or Modeselektor (who are on her Bpitch Control label). http://www.bpitchcontrol.de/ Jan - you know what I mean, stop pretending to be offended, sure I've heard of a couple of those bands but wouldn't be massively familiar with their stuff because you can't keep track of every single indie rock band out there, niche bands maybe? happy now? |
