Was driving back from surfing achill last night and, the sea gods must have been with me, the radio was sick! Started with Brian Wilson and Band live in Copenhagen on RTE Radio 1, then switched to Cormac Battles who played Teenage Fanclub's 'Its All In My Mind' (he claims its a great song, it was my first listen, and I must agree) among other stuff then John Kelly had a one hour Steve Earle Special, man the 6.5 hour drive flew. Which brings me to my point, if y'all had to make a long drive home what would you most like to hear on the radio.

I read once that you know you have turned into your old man when you have a special stick in your shed for mixing paint. For me, it is the fact that my car radio is constantly tuned to Newstalk or sometimes BBC 5 when I can get an AM signal. No music at all on either. This isn't really a reflection of age but the generally dire quality of radio in this country. When tuned into music stations, I find myself flicking from one lamentable channel to another avoiding the dross they play. Equally annoying is the fact that I am clearly in their advertising "age demographic" as their only deviation from the charts is to play sh1te from the eighties which I hoped I'd never have to hear again. I too would like to hear Phantom back (next April i believe). Not that it was particularly great but at least it didn't have me diving for the dial. It will be interesting to see if they can compete on a commercial footing (i.e. will it be too niche a listenership? Will they end up substituting Son of Dork for the Pixies? Afterall, 2FMs re-positioning to bring forward more indie shows Jen Huston, Dan Hegarty just hasn't worked out). Me? I hanker for the halcyon days of the eighties where there were so many pirate and local community stations that often you couldn't tune 2FM in because the local signals were so strong. A spin through the dial could take you from ear shattering Brazillian death metal to a full run through 'War of the Worlds' to the latest local wannabes.

I took one of those Questionaires over the radio, on behave of 98fm (which I found out about at the end). Basically All my answers were Newstalk, as its on my radio alarm in the bedroom, so 20mins at night, & 20mins in the morning, with sport on the weekends was the extent of my listening ... Made me out to be some old foggie with no interest in music. No questions as to why I listen to my mp3 for about 2or3hrs a day as opposed to the radio.

That Tony Fenton or had lost his voice and would be replaced by Donal Dineen... permanently. I find radio with a lot of chatter when you're driving home from work utterly pointless as you tend not to be (or at least shouldn't be!) listening too hard as you're focused on driving. Some decent tunes are all thats required. The only remotely useful info to me is the traffic report, which usually tells me about the jam I'm already stuck in. Also, someone please bring back Karl Tsingindos "River of Soul", nothing like some deep soul when yer off somewhere on a summer sunday evening. Not that theres any point complaining about the radio of course, it all be clearchannel owned soon anyway. Got me an MP3 CD head unit which I use to play back CD-R compilations I've made. 12 Hours of hand picked ear candy on one CD, a couple of those would even keep Ewan McGregor going on his next road trip.

that steve earle show was brilliant. made me go off and find all those "copperhead road" classics again irish radio sucks. sorry, no, hold on, irish pop radio sucks. its just DROSS from start to finish. surely i am not alone in not wanting to hear this drivel all day long. like most of u, i have long tuned out and listen to CDs all day long and to rte radio 1 for news and stuff. 2FM is dreadful. u have a better chance of hearing decent music during the daytime on radio 1 than on 2FM (ronan collins or lillian smyth or even john creedon). maybe i'm getting old but i listen to 2FM and it sounds like music made to soundtrack paint drying

Its newstalk all the way for me since phantom went. Cant stand listening to music on irish radio. Even Tom Dunne gets on my nerves. Just dont like his voice... The girlfriend often has BBC Radio 1 on when im up north and they have this REALLY annoying feature of talking at the end of a song whereby when they want to talk, they turn the volume of the sound down, then spin it up again until a second or two later when they want to talk again, and they do this over and over again for their blurb at the end of the song. Gives me a bloody headache I also did a survey over the phone, turned out to be for one of those "Girls in the Beatle car" stations. The survey was completely pointless because as per mully, the questions were rubbish.

Unfortunately, in a typically Irish fudge, the government of the day (late eighties) in an attempt to close down the pirate stations who were in it for the money also closed down all the boffins, noodlers and bedroom broadcasters who kept the airwaves interesting. This has left us with twenty years of a minimum number of stations who are basically clones of each other. However we only have ourselves to blame (well, obviously not us here on Cluas, having some semblence of non-mainstream taste). Radio, like TV is a truly democratic medium. The stations live and die by ratings. They almost exclusively churn out whatever the the most people tune into as the more listeners, they more they can charge for advertising. Simple as that I'm fraid. The fact that even in Dublin, you can count the number of licenses awarded in a decade on one hand is a source of continuing mystery. That's not a lot of stations sharing a lot of ad revenue.

Thats my pet DJ hate too! a lot of daytime radio DJs on Irish radio do it too, I think they believe it keeps a "momentum" to the show, when all it is, is really annoying. If they wanna talk, then by all means talk, if they wanna play a record, well play it already and zip it damnit!

I was listening to Today FM round about the 11 o'clock mark. There are 2 saps presenting a show where the object seems to be who can shout the loudest, they say s**t & piss a lot. Hilarious! Typical of the majority of Jocks on the radio who know nothing about music & don't even seem to be music fans of any type. Record collections consist of Best Ofs....& Dance Anthems. Whoever they are, they personify all thats wrong in Ireland today. I hate them, I really really do. How can a station that's home to the comedy genius that is Gift Grub, have 2 intellectually challenged gobsh&^es on the airwaves. Is it part of care in the community ??

Someone pull me up here but wasn't one of the stipulations of Today FMs license that they had to have a certain amount of talk rather than just wall to wall music? Maybe this is the reason for the unforgiveable day time inane ramblings of their half wit hosts. Seriously depriving villages somewhere of their rightful idiots...

Taking Donal Dineen off his 10 O'Clock slot was a monumental f**k up on the part of Today FM.

interestingly donal dineen's audience has held steady and there has even been a small increase per the last JNLR figures. i think he's better off later on because his style suits that hour. still, a station which would have daytime shows from dineen, john kelly (with a good producer who would stop his "i'm 40 so I'm old" ramblings), the river of soul guy whose name i cannot pronounce, a few proper indie DJs (suggestions welcome) and a few loose cannons like PJ Curtis and some of the people from Radio na Life would get my vote.

I really like Donal Dineen's show BUT I sometimes don't get to listen in as I've smashed up my radio cos the two dopes on before him and moved me to acts of violence. I think it is true that Today FM have to have a certain amount of "talk" on air BUT could they not just play re runs of Gift Grub or maybe tha sound of one hand clapping instead of those two fools ??!

Was listening too Great story on it, about a couple who want the Bryan Adams song from Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves to be their first song on the dance floor, well that was there intention, anyway. They asked "The song from Robin Hood". DJ found it an odd request, but obliged. Couple get up for their first dance to .... "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Riding through the glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood, With his Merry Men ..."

Thats the odd thing about radio, apart from Radio 1 ... There is no music for adults, unless your are a taxidriver or your own parents who listen to LiteFM. The other Stations continue to play music aimed at kids all through the day, when their target audience is in school, & not listening. I've yet to hear KCRWs Morning Goes Eclectic, but have heard good things about it. Why is Donal Dineen (& 'his kind') confined to the Graveyard shift ? Why do we have to what til some ungodly hour to hear good music ? Why wont my boss accept that as an excuse for fslling asleep in work ?
