I can't speak for everyone, but I don't hate him (I'm rather presumptiously assuming that this has been prompted by the tongue in cheek title of my compilation in the mixtapes thread?) just that his show is just a little predictable and dull at times. Not bad, just not particularly compelling, but the same can be said for most radio these days.

Indeed and it was binokular! Predictable-and a fan of The Thrills-he may be but I reckon he's bringing music to the masses (and by masses I mean the country folk of which I am one)who have very little choice in terms of radio. When you take out the big hitters of 2FM and RTE 1, Today is left to fly the flag unless you're a fan of the trad/country staples of local radio. And he brought us 'Parachute' which I will always rate as a great Irish song :)

as a native of the south east up to about a year ago i can confirm that mr/mrs/ms locks knows what (s)he's on about regarding bringing music to the country folk. what i could never understand was why he then focussed so much on the dublin scene. theres life outside the pale!!! sometimes not alot in fairness though he's good, just a bit too safe. and i hate when empathises with his interviewees about life on the road or something. i feel like sending a text goi, "we know tom, we remember your past career"

That'll be Ms. Lock to you Mutch! The way I see it , he plays the stuff we all know and does the predictability thing because it's the remit of the brilliant Alison Curtis to bring us a little bit of new band/alternative (whatever that means these days) on Sundays..I do agree with you on the empathy though. The whole "its tough to break out of Dublin/Ireland" "Life on the road is only mad" spiel grates but I reckon he's there because of his history and his abilty to see it from the musicians pov etc etc. And though gigs may be few and far between, he does still play on occasion y'know!

Its very true that Today FM are probably the best of a bad lot when it comes to national radio, however the fact that Tom Dunne is probably as good as it gets on national radio before midnight is a pretty sad state of affairs. I know theres other decent shows out there, but they rarely grab my interest either.

Yeah they played a 20th anniversary gig there a while back and I can recall seeing them maybe two years ago in Whelans. Its a nostalgia thing with them these days methinks. As for the Frames, damn you for blighting my thread with their name!!

I listen to the show most nights becasue in the main I like the stuff he plays. He may veer a little towards the safe-alternative side of things but he does play the odd gem. Don't get his thing with the thrills though. It's not like there is much alternative to him. I don't listen to Fanning because his timeslot clashes with my current affairs radio listening. Jenny Huston is OK but she's a little bit too "rock" for me. It's a disgrace that Today FM moved Donal Dineen's timeslot, midnight is a horrible time. And I do love Alison Curtis (no, not that way, even though I do have a thing for girls that can't pronounce their 'o's) but I've got better things to do on Sunday. Anyone know when the alternative licence for Dublin is going to be given out?
