I read somewhere that Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) is going to be selling some mix tapes that he compiled. This got me thinking, as a person who makes alot of mix cd's for friends, what would the Cluas members put on theirs? Basically, if you are compiling your best mix tape/cd....what three songs would you defintely have to put on there? What would be the 'hook' tune? What would you name the mix? And what song would you sign off with?

These 3 would definitely feature; Stevie Wonder - Superstition Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere Arthur McBride - Paul Brady Among recent tunes that would feature would be; Galileo - Declan O'Rourke Mundy - By Her Side Damien Rice - Cheers Darlin I think I'd have to sign off with Jeff Buckley's Satisified Mind and I would call the compilation Dot Cotton's Love Tunes.

Funny, I've been thinking of starting a thread like this for a while, but never really got round to it. I can't be bothered putting together an all time favourites mix CD, because its really difficult and also a bit boring. I rarely put the same songs on two different CDs, even if i'm giving them to different people. The best mix CDs have at least one throwaway track. So here is a mix CD that I would put together if I wanted to show whats grabbing my attention at the moment. I'm limiting myself to 15 tracks as a very conservative estimate of what you can fit on a CD-R (I usually manage to get 19 - 21 on there, but I can't be arsed figuring out track lengths). Many of the tracks are just MP3s I've downloaded (legally!, well mostly, bootlegs are a grey area) 1. Miss Kittin - Professional Distortion (guaranteed to clear the cobwebs from the speakers) 2. Asobi Seksu - I'm happy but you don't like me 3. Instamatic - Egyptian Jet (Bootleg: The Bangles "walk like an Egyptian Vs. Jet "Are you gonna be my girl?") 4. Art Brut - Formed a band (best lyrics I've heard in ages) 5. Flight of the Conchords - Humans are Dead (obligitary comedy song, not a bad tune in its own right either. Songs about robots wiping out humanity are funny, no really..) 6. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle 7. Emperor X - Florencia Tropicana 8. Velvet Underground - Here she comes now 9. Billy Childish - I've got everything 10. The Clash - Straight to Hell 11. Echo and The Bunnymen - The Cutter 12. Seelenluft - Mes Amis (fun dance track, not quite as good as "Manilla" but great all the same) 13. Havana Guns - Sister Brother 14. Sonic Youth - Paper Cup Exit 15. Holly Golightly - It's all me I think I shall name this mix "More Fun than Tom Dunne"

Then you probably will love this electro breakdance video take on the theme, sounds a bit like Afrika Bambaataa for body-poppin B-Bots. Takes ages to load up fully though, even on broadband: http://www.wilenkin.com/transformers/Video_player_06_content.html Major thumbs up to your choice of Echo and The Bunnymen song too by the way.

I think I'd better drag out High Fidelity again. BTW does anyones feel the same way I do when John Cusack refuses the Spitful Womans Husbands record collection ( Acute Horror!) or do rare and hard to find releases not have the same gravity as they used to ( What with MP3 and the like ) ?? ( Feel free to move this to a new thread if need be )

First of all, dont mess with a legendary theme tune and secondary, thank you. I'm just getting into the full flow of Echo after Donnie Darko went into my favourite movies list whcih is a thread I have yet to start.

I was recently asked to compile a CD of "Irish Music" for a bloke in Iceland ( yes, you read that correctly ). The brief was: some old favourites from the usual suspects ( U2 etc. ) plus some current stuff. THIS was the result. Yiz'll probably all rip it to shreds as being terribly safe and predictable but do I care ? Do I f*ck. 'Hell Bent On You' Roesy 'Porterhouse Blues' Stewart Agnew 'Hey Juliet' Sean Needham 'Dismantled' Brendan O'Shea 'Whistle' Tom Ann Scott 'Lucky' Elaine K 'Fading' Phase Jenny Lindfors 'Black Is The Colour' Cara Dillon 'Mono Prix' Nina Hynes '1987' Juliet Turner 'Clean And Neat' Cathy Davey 'Not Your Self' Iain Archer 'It's All Good' Damien Dempsey 'Ordinary Man' Christy Moore 'Riches Of The Poor' Colm Quearney 'Hotel Room' Fionn Regan 'Your World' Declan O'Rourke

Surely everyone with friends abroad has made an "Irish" mix at some point. Last one I did I completely broke protocal and put 2 songs by some people on. The shame.

oooooh fantastico: I am, actually, an american lucky enough to have recieved a double disc half-Irish half-general mix from a friend of mine on your end of the ocean. I made a return mix with a number of these songs on it, though as i've been sitting here recalling it i've now changed (improved) it a bit: 1- Arab Strap : The Shy Retirer (a perfect opener, i reckon) 2- Ted Leo: Biomusicology 3- REM - Life and How to Live it (a lesser known track, but timeless.) 4- Neutral Milk Hotel - Two-Headed Boy 5- Cat Power - I Don't Blame You (we're officially slowed down here) 6- Blind Melon - Mouth Full of Cavities 7- Spoon - Everything Hits at Once (...and start picking it up gradually) 8- Beach Boys - Sloop John B (gotta include at least one classic) 9- Kamikaze Hearts - War Horse 10- Rapture - Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks (we're officialy up and shaking it again) 11- Walkmen - The Rat (the album this comes from has officially clinched a spot on my top 10 of 2004) 12- Black Keys - Set You Free 13- Calexico - Black Heart (slower, but still subtly aggressive/abrasive) 14- Notwist - Consequence (tempting as a closer, but put here for some reason) 15- Wilco (or, if you have it, Jeff Tweedy solo) How to Fight Loneliness 16- Tom Waits - Whistle Down the Wind There is a sort of back-and-forth here between up bits and down bits. IF this were a mix cassette, I'd likely seperate them into two disctinct sides. about the closer: i did a radio show for three years and that was my final song on the show. It was, is, will always be my favorite closer. a name? i WISH i could take credit for this, but a friend once made a mix for me called "pop culture inspires earth diseases." That's what I'd call this, even if t's not originally mine. Everyone else's look solid, particularly Binokular and Punchbowl have some songs i adore and some songs i'm very curious about. So when are we trading?

2 Chems tracks, Hendrix and Yo La Tengo - respect! Not too mad about the Baz Luhrman track though. Never heard of Melvin Sparks, sounds good though, mst try and check it out. Just remembered another track that I've heard recently that I'd love to add to any compilation: The Go! Team - Ladyflash Just such a feelgood, danceable track with loads of great soul samples (but not in Moby kinda way). Gotta get their album.

I make mix cds all the time. If anyone wants to do a trade, let me know. The last mix I made was a criteria mix, where each song has a criteria you have to fulfill: 1. A song you'd want to listen to driving around at night with all the windows rolled down: 35007 - Evaporate 2. Song you like but dont want anyone to know about it: Ani DiFranco - You Had Time 3. A song that makes you weep: Sun Kil Moon - Carry Me Ohio 4. A song by whoever you're listening to right now, or the last artist you listened to: Yellow #5 - Screaming Mimi 5. A song that makes you want to dance: !!! - Intensify 6. A song you love to blast and sing loudly to: Metric - Dead Disco 7. Wildcard: Mclusky - Pure 8. A song with a color in the title (blue not allowed): The Ruby Doe - Red Letters 9. A song by a local band: Big Business - don't know the title 10. Something old school: Butthole Surfers - USSA 11. A song by a one hit wonder band, that is not their one hit wonder: Mary's Danish - Well, Well 12. A country song: Alison Krauss - Too Late to Cry 13. Song you'd like played at your funeral: Nick Drake - Nothern Sky 14. A song that sounds EXACTLY like a different person/band than what it is: Patty Griffin - Mil Besos 15. A song that has heaps of sentimental meaning to you: U2 - A Sort of Homecoming 16. Best duet: Damien Rice - Cold Water 17. A song that you hated at first and now love (but not for sentimental reasons): Whipping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else 18. Must be a live song: The Frames - Young Hearts Run Free 19. The Frames - Star Star
