Lets not forget that people were required to txt a request for a ticket to this gig. In otherwords it cost people money (not much you say, but when you add up all the people that might have entered) to express an interest in this. The txt tells people to keep this text to show on the day... whats that all about, are they goign to block off a section of the street and only let people with the text message in ?

I'd need a better look at the smallprint on the posters about town, but the Admin on the RoL Forum, Whoop Whoop did state it was FreeText. I reckon it was just Vodafones way of getting a Database of numbers together.

maybe you get to go on another boat in the liffey probably red coloured with the word vodafone written on it and get a free bag and a tshirt, and everyone else on the banks will wish their life was as great as the partiers on the boat. maybe the dandy warhols will be there to sign your phone.

The texts were free but the information that vodafone has gathered is probably worth a small fortune. ROL are looking very fvcking silly from where I'm sitting. The BBC copy Una posted showed how it is supposed to be done. But Ireland being Ireland, the greedy b'stards want as many people coming as they can thus they stick a band in the liffey like a bunch of idiots.

Oh man, I can just see some marketing droid in vodafone rubbing his hands in glee at the list of numbers, muttering 'target market' and 'youth demographic'.

Did you have to pay a fee for the text to get the info?

Yeah!!! What a rip off. I had to text(for free) to a corporate giant(who already have all my details)in order to see a band I like playing a free concert in the middle of town on a sunny summers day. I feel totally abused.Who do these people think they are? How dare they attempt a vibe in the city. Next it will be covert profiling contucted by faceless capatilists who want to get me on some list to send me junk mail, oh wait, thats been happening for years.

This one seems open to anyone with the ability to stand on a bridge ...
well from the O2 addvertisements it seems most of their customers spend there time under water so a bridge could rule them out
Meteor customers will probably go to the wrong gig.

First off Woja, welcome on board... How would they have had my details... yes if i was a vodafone customer, they might have had my details, but there are 2 other phone operators out there. If they didnt charge for the text, fair nuff, but i doubt thats the case, I reckon they didnt charge extra for the text, but that normal operator charges most likely did apply. Nothing wrong with trying to get a vibe going. People aint objecting to that. its the matter of how it was put to people. But hey, none of us know exactly what the score is yet, so we will wait and see.

The text was/is free & if ya didnt want to send a text you could/can enter your mobile nubmer via the website www.vodafoneaccessmusic.ie This ran last year and was a good way to spend a few lunch breaks. In fact The Walls played the gig on the barge in the liffey, there was a great turn out and atmosphere on the boardwalk for the duration. Currently the 'rumour mill/grapevine' whatever you want to call it has 'Keane' as the top british act. Endemol filmed 'a day in the life' type documentary of some Razorlight fans and worked it around their TBA gig the other week, currently the same production company are looking to do the same with Keane fans. Considering Keane havent bothered to included any irish dates on any tour for the last 2yrs & have some seriously odd venue choices on their tour this year, i wouldnt be at all surprised if it does turn out to be them. The UK version of this is the TBA series, same deal, get a text saying where and when the gig is on, so far Snow Patrol, The Zutons, Razorlight & The Strokes have all played at some fairly cool venues...Covent Garden, The Natural History Museum to name two. Ok the Liffey doesnt quite match up, but so what, its live music outdoors during the summer and its free. IF at a future date you get a call from a market research company looking for you to do a survey on behalf of Vodafone just tell them to remove your name from their call list and no damage done

I think its up to the band if they want to do stuff like this. ROL have got great publicity out of this and without doubt alot of cash to keep them off the dole for a while if they are attempting to do the full time musician thing. On the other hand they are making cool a greedy horrible company that im sure if anyone digs deep enough have possibly done nasty things to get were they are. I really have nothing against bands at their level doing this once they are happy, its when the Dandy Warhols do it that it gauls me. I am in a band and we were recently asked to do auditions for a Meteor add (you know the one with the band in TV)and we said no coz it just wouldnt sit right and altho we could possibly make enough to pay for some studio time and some equipment its just not our thing. Im goona go down to this gig today (just coz i work right beside it) and i`ll fill you all in later. Bet the sound is atrocious.

i'd have to agree with you on that...if you want to make money from music so bad you should join a wedding band. People slate wedding bands but I think that it's infinitely more dignified than appearing in an ad or marketing stunt. I know the line gets blurred at festivals, but this is clearcut.

I'm not sure if I can concur with some of the 'ideals' at work here, as much as I despise 'the man'. This 'stunt' is working both ways. If people are criticising RoL, then, should The Marshals have played the Nokia Music Tour, should Stagger Lee have played the MyFestival, should Delorentos have played Heineken's 'Oxegen', should ANY band play for MCD or Aiken whom people constantly criticised, should bands really sell their tickets through ticketmaster and their 'booking fee' absurdities, should U2 allow American Express to promote their Red Campaign? You can't draw solid lines with such developed and integrated commercialism that is now a part of the music industry - it's not a case of 'you either sell out or you don't' . Hawk goods if you want, but make good music in the process please. Remember music? It's that jingle on a ring tone.

I just believe its up to the band and what they are comfy with, i also think that alot of people have this vision that because a band play left of centre music it means thats the way their minds are focused, this kinda thing ends up with people being disappointed when somewhen they like ends up doing a commercial. Personally i think fronting an add campaign for a company is way too much for a band, doing festivals is fine because the deal is between promoter and company (as far as i know).

I don't think anyone was being that black and white. it is blurred. but there are times, for your own dignity's sake, where you should just say no to offers. Standing on a vodafone float in the middle of the liffey is not my idea of rock n roll, but maybe that's just me. Now if they sank the float that would be cool.

One of the reasons I shed a felt really bad when I heard The Beta Band called it a day was the fact that they turned down $250,000 to allow their music to be used on a car advert in the States. http://www.leftoffthedial.com/BetaNMEArticle.htm

I'm amazed at some peoples reaction to this. In essence, Vodafone are putting on a free showcase gig (for both the band and the company) in a public space, for the general public. It's really no big deal that they've created these text 'tickets' for entry. This is just to hype up the gig. It's got all of us talking, so I assume most of us will be(or are) there. Vodafone have plenty of databases and really would not require this info for any evil corporate money-making reasons so don't fret about selling your soul only to see Republic of Loose.. However, as nice an idea as it is, floating a band on the Liffey is a bit too gimmicky to be taken seriously. Had they of arranged for it to be in a park (the Iveagh Gardens?) it would of been more of an event, rather than the curiosity that it will be for passers by. If it's all building up to a free indoor gig then great, if it's Keane, god save us.

i think doing a sponsored fertival is quite different to doing a sponsored gig on a float in a river. sponsorship doesn't bother me that much, i like music, i don't like ads, ignore the ads pretty much completely. if you really get down to it, there's an acceptable line for most bands - some won't play gigs by mcd, some won't sign a deal, some won't do ads, some won't stop sucking willy til the deal is done and money is made, and some are Kiss.

I have just got back from this event, and it was OK, im not a big fan but they played well and the sound was really good for an outdoor gig. The best part was the Access All Areas type thing the Vodafone people were handing out, basically something for people to hang around there necks and be walking advertisments. Unfortunatly it started to rain half way through (was this a sign that satan shouldnt be fondled with??) so i didnt stay the distance. Roll on the next secret gig ha ha, maybe it will be by the spire:-)
