I think it can reaaally depend on the crowd though...as to whether or not a DJ plays a good set. I DJ in town and my musical tastes are not exactly commercial, mainstream indie. I love playing really new tunes..Arcade Fire, Blonde Redhead, Tom Vek, Watchers, Bravery etc have all featured in my sets early on in their releases. Sometimes I get a reaaaally good reaction...peoples ears perking up and coming up to the booth enquiring about bands....havin a chat and I really like that. But then there are some nights when all I get is...hey lady play Franz ferdinand...play sweet home alabama.. etc etc. When I was Djing last week I had a really good night..big reactions of Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, New Order, The Rapture...even LCD soundsystem and DFA 1979 etc...but that was partly due to the fact that the people in the place were well into it. i'm not gonna complain though. I like to try to accomodate everyone considering I tend to get a really mixed crowd...just sometimes it can get pretty frustrating wanting to play stuff you really feel you want people to hear but they end up sometimes be so closed to the idea of anything non radio whored.

djs, would you ever play the Jefferson Airplane? say a tune like White Rabbit or Somebody To Love, psychedelic sure, but pretty famous and pretty darn good, or even "Good Time Boy" by Buffalo Springfield, obscure and old, but probably big enough on the indie circuit if they were released today i dunno, theres some nights, when that would really go down well, especially when the place is empty early on, so DJ doesnt have to worry overly bout the floor being full or not, but like people have said, different doesnt always go down, thinking about it, it must be damn hard being a dj, especially an indie dj, with that whole "cool" thing to deal with,

I agree with you there stroller. I once had a guy offering 20 euro for a promo of david holmes free association album cos he liked a track so much. I refused and told him he could probably get it for a tenner in any of the second hand shops or hmv/virgin but he was bloody persistant. By the way benni, where do you play in town. Your set sounds interesting compared to w****ns et al.

I've played White Rabbit so many Tuesday nights in the Drum now even the teeny bopper girls in skirts and heels are requesting it (along with the Killers of course). And I don't waste it on the warm up, you've got to play that tune at the end of the night.

Re: Sweetie... I dj in Doyles on College Green. Not all the time mind - there are three guys that are resident DJ's and whenever one of them is busy I cover for them - usually get to do it once a month...sometimes much more. I tend to do downstairs in the basement most. Its true about the start of a set though... thats usually when I play the most obscure stuff...generally because by later on most people are pissed and just want the same ole same ole. Mind you I was proper old school rock n roll at 2am in Doyles last week...banging out Elvis, Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis just for a laugh and the place was rockin...nice to be suprised eh?!

It's the bar part of the GPO night club in Galway. I would say it's good on a Tuesday but then I've been DJing there for nearly three years so I would say that. It really depends what kind of crowd is in there. The good points are that it's a long night (9.30-2.00) so if you come in early I'll be able to play a few lesser known tracks for you, and It's quite a small room so if there's 20-30 heads who really know there stuff then you can have a really good night. The music policy is indie but some weeks it can be very retro and some weeks it's all new stuff that I'm playing, it just depends on the crowd. I also do Thursdays But it's a shorter night and a very young crowd so I play less of the older stuff.
