The recent plunge in the strength of sterling is resulting in dirt cheap CDs from the likes of CDWOW.com and Play.com. CDWOW.com early last week had a day long 'happy hour' with 1 pound off everything and I got two recent releases for GBP 6.99 instead of the usual 7.99, P&P included. According to my Visa statement this translated to a ridiculous EUR 8.30 per CD. And sterling has fallen in further in value since then.

We could soon be seeing 1 pound for 1 euro. The 7 euro new release could be on our hands in a matter of weeks....

And I see that CDWOW are running another one of these 'one pound off happy hours' today up to 9pm...

A while back CDWOW had some warehouse problems (....I think a fire was involved...) and I recall some costly legal case they lost about the same time. I stopped buying from them around that time but since their site revamp earlier this year I dipped my toes back into their waters and have had no problems.

I bought a Dylan CD from them a while back, it cost me 2 GBP (after applying one of their 1 pound vouchers) and the thing arrived a week later having been posted from Australia(?!?) How they made money on that transaction I have no idea.

lost a lot of music recently when my mp3 player and hard drive broke down at the same time. need to start building up the collection again. all recommendations appreciated.

The other thing about them is that since the revamp, their catalogue of artists is quite impressive - obscurists ahoy.

Sterling just keeps on falling! Not quite at parity but it's now down to Eur 1.06 for a pound. Which means the 6.99 GBP CD I just ordered a few minutes ago (Sun Kil Moon's album of Modest Mouse covers, a fine indicator of how deep their selection is these days, as carry_grant has noted already) is going to cost me EUR 7.42.
