    - Who do you reckon is much better off playing solo than trying to regain past glories with their band? - Or should stick with their band and leave the solo outings alone?

Neither, form another band. Rarely does a band recapture it's former spark and going solo requires a lot of bravery as it can be a dangerous move because if someones solo project goes wrong, they can't really just disband and start again. No hard and fast rules of course, many a fantastic band has spawned dull solo projects and mediocre bands spawned great solo artists. Some bands have reformed successfully enough to make things worthwhile, New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen spring to mind.

Mick Jagger should never ever be allowed to make a solo record ever ever again.....EVER Frank Black...waiting for the backlash for this one; sorry but the pixies were utter s**te at landsdowne road and this is coming from a big pixies fan...they're finished.... Billy Corgan, ok fair enough Zwan were a band but it was his project, solo with a session group basically.... Damien Rice is an obvious Irish artist gone solo and done well.......

I thought that the 'Honeycomb' album by Frank Black was excellent.

ah yeah, i mean he has a steady output of decent solo efforts, my point is that the pixies reunion didnt really come off to be honest and reliving past glories can be a bad idea...great thing about that group, was that in a weird way they split at the right time.... and i've seen him live at vicar street a couple of years ago with his group the catholics and he was fantastic....

Obviously Robbie Williams done good, Gary Barlow done bad. Richard Ashcroft much better off solo than with the Verve. Ian Brown better with the Stone Roses than solo although still accomplished as a solo artist.

And here it is! Ah no, I agree that the Pixies reunion has been a big disappointment. I would say however, that Black's solo output has been quite disappointing too.

Lou Reed did alright for himself after the Velvets. Great band and thereafter a great solo career. Even John Cale has a done ok.

I've heard worrying reports of a Nicky Wire solo album.... I was a devoted teenage Manics fan and still have a soft spot for em but no, no, no, no....anyone ever hear his vocal outing on "Wattsville City Limits" or whatever off Know Your Enemy? Bad bad song. James has one on the way too.

Yer man from the Stereophonics should do a few solo albums so I can hate him even when he is between Stereophonics albums.

Personally, I find the saddest thing about the Pixies getting back together is that it means the end of The Breeders for the forseeable future. Personally I always like The Breeders better than the Pixies and despite the difficulties and extended holiday, the Breeders were still just about a functioning band prior to the Pixies reunion. The last Breeders album "Title TK" was pretty enjoyable, and I love the way it was recorded all analogue, not as anti-technology move, just because Kim Deal had a very specific idea how she wanted it to sound. Killing a band thats still got life in it to ressurest a long dead one seems a bit sad really.

To name but a few glorious tunes; Calistan, Speedy Marie, I heard Ramona sing, Headache, Freedom Rock, Mosh, Don't pass the guy, Men In Black, Los Angeles, Hang on to your ego... How can you anything BUT love Frank Black?? To be fair you have to separate Frank Blacks solo efforts into two chapters, Frank Black, and Frank Black & the Catholics. I loved his first three solo albums, but had no time for most of the material that followed, although I don't blame it on him, just the Catholics. Ben Gibbard is a great fella for doing side and solo projects other that his input in Death Cab... Postal Service (with Dntel), All Time Quarterback & under his own name yet none of the music suffers despite his time being divided. Great man.

Actually, when Damo left Juniper, the band lost their lack of talent and turned into the rather fine Bell X1

Iggy Pop hasn't done too bad for himself after the Stooges, Sting since leaving The Police, Neil Young when he left Buffalo Springfield and Graham Coxton seems to be a happy chappy since leaving Blur!!

I gotta say I agree that Nicky Wire sucks on vocals, and I personally can imagine that his writing, musically will be s**te too... but I will say this, GREAT LYRICIST. I dunno what James Deans' Solo work would be like... Im gonna go with good. BellX1 are better than ever without Damo, Id say their Egos were clashin! Sting should have never let the other fellas go. I like nearly anything by Billy Corgan (with or without a band... though preferably with Mr. Chamberlin on Drums)

I hope Graham does go back to Blur... he just lacks class by himself in my opinion.

What about Robbie Robertson's solo work since he split The Band up? I think 'Storyville' is a rare little gem of an album.
