The last time I saw Ferghal McKee was in the Tivoli Theatre. He had just wrapped a roll of cling film around his head and was trying a tricky climbing manoeuvre over a set of drums. Now almost a decade later I can't figure out what to expect for Sunday's gig. Let's hope the theatrics are still there, the music, no doubt will look after itself. Let's hope they haven't gone all fat and lairy.... ps intro act are God Is An Astronaut, up there with Michael Knight for Irish band of the year.

Well, verdict? I have to say I really loved it, was a bit worried when I saw McKee marching out wearing an outfit that probably dated from the last time indiecater saw him but boy does he know how to put on a show. Best songs were probably the pair off submarine that they played back to back, will have to track that album down now. Odd crowd I thought, probably due to the age range. Some of it was quite reserved but on the other hand, and yeah; I don't go to metal gigs, I haven't seen that much moshing and crowd surfing here in a decade. Thought Mckee was going to incite a stage invasion at one point. There were a couple of duff moments but overall it was great.

There were a couple of naff moments ('We Want A Revolution' may have worked when everyone was on the dole but in the prosperous noughties?) but overall it was a good gig. Agree with you that the best moments were from the Submarine album (Favourite Sister & Sushi). They are still a powerful live act, if they could trim the show a tad they stand a good chance of taking on some new fans. McKee is a one off, I thought he started to fall apart mid-way through the set but he seemed to recover in time for the predictable fireworks on the final song 'We Don't Need Nobody Else'. God Is An Astronaut were a revelation. They could be onto something big.

I didn't catch God Is An Astronaut last night but they've never really impressed me that much.

Is it just me or were whipping boy, and im aware of the tongue lashings I'm going to get, a load off crap? I'm 20 now and I only copped on to them three years ago, but that was just over-distorted- middle-aged-man screaming through a mic until he had to actually sing when he was nearly out of breath. The sound was appalling and the crowd seemed mostly to consist of people who snapped up tickets through word of mouth rather than actually having a genuine love for the band. I brought my friend who likes almost any decent rock music but she'd never heard any songs. I'm so sorry I subjected this upon her. I love them on record, but this being an unexpected waste of around €35 which I could've put towards the strokes or Broken Social Scene. The berating of my comments may commence now...

i used to go see WB loads the 1st time around but no amount of money would have coaxed me along to these gigs. its a nostalgia-fest (its the week for it with sultans of ping, kerbdog etc - all we need now is a cactus world news revival) and the band could never ever live up to what it was like the 1st time around. of the people i know who were there, it splits right down the middle - some loved it, some loathed it. i'd say WB will hang around for a while longer cos they know theres money for nappies in them there hills. expect a House to join them on the big fat comeback merrygoround in '06 cos Couse's record and solo career are going nowhere. PS that god is an astronaut CD is savage - dying to see THEM live to see if they live up to that album

I thought the sounds was ok. It was his vocals that were pretty off target. He was out of tune for a lot of the songs. Other then that I thought it was an OK gig. Definitelly wasnt as good as i hoped. Kerbdog, on the other hand, were deadly last night

Yeah, McKee was loose as f*ck but wasn't he always. Thought the whole revolution guff was cringeworthy but all in all a pretty solid gig. It was never going to be a incendary or as exciting as the first time around but they tried. To be fair, they Olympia was always going to be a tough venue - he was seriously struggling with the gap to the crowd. Still, long time since I've been at a gig with crowd surfing. One of the bouncers totally flipped out with the whole thing jumping in and out of the crowd. Hilarious to watch. I think it was the first time I paid more than a fiver to see WB. I don't think I'll be doing it again unless it was a much smaller venue. Now, what's this about Cactus World News getting back together....

I'd agree with Pilchard. Although everyone I was with at the gig loved it, opinion on the gig online seems to be split down the middle. There were some sound problems at the start with Page's guitar work getting lost in the mix but after three or four songs everything was cool. McKee was never much for singing - particularly the Heartworm stuff, he nailed the Submarine songs though, his voice seems to be better suited to them. Pilchard, if you like the God is an Astronaut CD I'm sure they'll impress you live. They create a really convincing, polished sound. They also have a giant TV screen as a backdrop which lends a theme to each song. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I guess it would depend on how strongly attached you are to any images you may already have in your head for the songs.

My biggest problem with God Is An Astronaut live is the visuals. Not that I find them offensive or unsettling, I just think it's really lame to use nazi images in an attempt to be provocative.

My mistake then, apologies, seemed like it when I saw yez. Is it stuff from the firebombing of Dresden or Hamburg in there in the war footage? Perhaps thats where I got confused.
