I know there have been discussions, or at least comments about Dave Couse before but any thoughts on the new album 'The World Should Know'?? I have to say, with the new band it's really all coming together for him...and the single 'Batman & Robin' has been received really well. He's apparently set to play another gig now before Christmas and apparently played a blinder in Whelans on Sat night.. was anyone lucky enough to make it? Listen out for the track 'Into You'. Seriously great stuff, I think Mr Couse is fully back on form.

Missed Whelans, but the rumour is he's playing a bigger and brighter venue just before Christmas.. If the idea of Couse in a Santa suit is your thing then I expect to see you in the front row...'Into You' is the highlight of the album, esp that so-good-it-would-make-interpol-blush last 2 minutes of guitar madness.. There's usually samples and full MP3 on www.Davecouse.com but the site is getting it's pre-christmas clean-up so here's a rare, but still fantastic, A House track from about 15 years ago instead... http://jamiesrunoutgroove.blogspot.com/2005/10/mp3-sounds-machine-ep3-3-house.html BTW some people have been commenting on the backdrop that he used in Whelans, it was designed by Nick Seymour (Bass player with Crowded House) who I also believe did the album artwork!...

I can perfectly understand why there is a dislike of Couse' previous material, but the new album is really so good... Untie Manhattan, I hope your basing your opinion on having listened to the NEW stuff coz while I've always found Couse quite endearing, I was not gone on the album 'Genes' but give Cousey a chance. Go on.

Couse a joke? How so? One of the great unsung heros of Irish music IMHO. Joke or not, always interesting....

indeed I have Nomington. I recieved a copied version of it from a friend who raved on about it. It left me feeling like I'd heard it before sometime around 1993/4. My problems with Dave Couse and the new album are twofold. one, the song writing is bland, the themes, characters and stories are that of a middle-aged man trying rather badly to be seen as being vital and relevant. Couse's bile-induced songs were interesting when he was younger with a-house, but a 40 something man blathering on about Celebrity to me is like my dad dancing - totally embaressing. two, the guys voice hasn't improved with age, if fact it's gotten worse. I haven't been exposed to the Genes album as you have and I'm thankful to have missed that boat. I do agree on something Couse used to have a awkward charm in his youth - I feel now he is just awkward, out of step and decidely dated. It just feels forced, like he's been swatting up on what teh indie kids like. Sorry, just my opinion. I get the impression that there is also this idea that because he is a survior of the first wave of Irish 'indie' acts that he's above criticism and somehow should be venerated on the basis of what he achieved (or didn't achieve) - ahouse were good, not great, they produced an interesting back catalogue, with some stand out moments I am the Greatest being for my money the closest they came to producing a seamless record. I agree with you that they weren't without their charm, but basing opinions on whether an artist is endearing is kinda what's wrong with the music scene in Dublin, where too many bands and singers trade on their past without anyone really being critical about their present out put cos they're some sort of hero to the keepers of the flame of Irish rock music. Example when Whipping Boy, who in my opinion produced the best Irish album of all time, get round to releasing something new should we simply praise it because of their heritage or should we be honest and critical no matter how endearing Fergal is in person? Just a question. I'd be interested in your presepctive. Thanks.

Well untie manhatten.. actually, have you considered changing your name to auntie manhatten... sorry, I just misspelt it there and I thought it sounded funny! I'm happy to say I can't be nostalgic about A House because I was probably still in nappies! So I don't feel like I was part of that particular Indie wave, I'm basing Couse' material on it's own merits and nothing else. Couse/The Impossible are so far away from any of my favourite artists or bands so I can 100% undrestand that it's not for everyone but I still really like what he does. Genes I thought had some great moments although was fairly basic and didn't really bring anything new to the table. Having said that, inoffensive and solid. It's my thoughts on the previous album that are really making me so vocal on the new one! I find it very hard to believe that you think that it sounds like previous material, it's for the exact opposite reason that I love it. Couse has genuinely tried something new... I know Celebrity for example sounds like the usual rant of Couse.. and is, of course, but the music rocks. The soaring guitars throughout the 2 minute epic at the end of Into You could easily be compared to Interpol, the glorious melodies of the title track 'The World Should Know' don't indicate a tone deaf has-been and if you have found the high powered rants of Couse previous escapades too much, you might find 'Fakers' a refreshing change, with a soothing, almost hypnotic tones and some really mellow guitar music. If you, and I think you may not be, look beyond the surface untie manhatten, and ignore the flashing siren in your head indicating 'You must not like Couse', I think you would be surprised. I don't mean to question you, but (even from listening to it right now), I doubt how much listening you have given this album. Only because (in my opinion) for once, Couse solo material is NOT at all bland. It's a highly varied album. Lastly, while you think the fans of A House and Couse are stuck in the past hanging onto something non existant, it seems you are more so stuck on a lasting, never-to-be-reconsidered opinion of Dave Couse.

I know little about Dave Couse to be honest, but have just read the interview with him in Foggy Notions and thought he came across as very self-effacing and likeable. So much so I might have a dig around his stuff and give it a listen. Such honesty in musicians these days seems to be becoming a rare commodity.

sorry nomington, nearly typed gnomington (which wouldn't have changed the pronouciation), there must be some confusion. 1. I listened to the album twice and it left me cold. The door was open but that wasn't it. For me it was the song writing which felt dated. The attempt to co-opt an 'interpol' esque sound underscores what I wrote - Couse is bereft of ideas and sounds middle aged. 2. I would liked the album to be good, gave it two listens and decided that it was nasty, derivitive stuff. Charmless and an example of poor song writing. 3. I had the siren removed. Finally I hate a-house fans for glorifying an odd ball band and song writers who lyrical prowess is limited to list songs. at best okay - never great.

to be honest the whipping boy in the pond life of early 1990's irish music scene, may have seemed to be wonderful but to be honest they wheren't that great. the whipping boy just pale when compared to the great irish bands such as: not our world /microdisney/stars of heavan/ doesn't the phrase irish bands just ghetto-ise them is there a subculture of great leitrim bands a house on the other hand have a proven body of work which are quite good in their own world yes a house could/should have been great but hey they wheren't get over it couse/house fans. the world should know is a great record better than genes better than one or two of the a house records. couse released a great single this year..the record is a great way forward for him the music is good.. after about 5 listens it hit home. hey on the plus side couse is getting played on the bbc which is always agood thing.

NOW in the same breath as the Stars and Microdisney???? ah c'mon now..... i know its xmas but the hardcore band that gave the world the great niall mcgurk and Hope Promotions would even blush themselves at such a comparison as for great Leitrim bands.... the drummer from Mike TV hailed from Carrick On Shannon A House rocked. No-one else came close to them. Which makes Couse's present work all the sadder.

sadder....not a nice turn of phrase as i think his current work is on a bar with a hpouse and at times surpasses it. but hey each to their own....

theres more than stars in them there pies. NOW were a wonderful hardcore act who had a big-ish following in a small-ish scene. both microdisney and stars of heaven - who u mentioned above alongside NOW - achieved far, far more both in terms of quantity and quality when it came to gigs, albums and songs. the comparison just doesnt work
