Jack White is apparently in talks to write a new song for Coke. They want one to rival the old "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" one and figure Jack is the man to do it. Anyone else share my disappointment?

When has he stropped in a diva-like fashion? When he beat Von Bondie guy? I wouldn't call that "diva" behaviour. I wouldn't call dating a movie star a symptom on the road to "sell out country" either to be honest. If Mark E. Smith fell in love with Natalie Portman I wouldnt blame him but I wouldnt necessarily expect him to do a Gap ad either. Jack's one of the last guy's I'd expect to give in to something like that. Very odd. Maybe he's seen one his heroes, Dylan, hop on the Starbucks Express and decided it must be OK. Very disheartening.

If you want a song written, you go to a song writer ... Its not like the next album will be called "Coke for the gob, not the nostril". Although he does wear alot of Red & White ...

yeah i've no problem with coke looking to get jack white to do it, it obviously makes sense from their perspective. I do have a problem with him whoring himself out to a company for some cash he doesnt need.

The way I see it Jack White has projected himself in a certain light - all those interviews where he said he doesnt understand 'autographs'and never asked for one in his life cause its just ego inflation and about souless music etc. When Lyndsey Lohan or whoever it was asked him to write her a song everyone cracked up because it was so inconcievable for him to be associated with such a commerical piece of s**te... and then this... thats just bulls**t man.

That's what I mean. In lots of interviews he goes on about mourning a bygone age and it seems he would like to have been born in the early half of the century. He seems to dislike the modern music industry an awful lot. He really seemed to me to be a real stand-up guy with lots of integrity and honesty. The Coke thing seems totally at odds with everything I thought I knew about him. From a marketing guy's point of view, it would be a perfect marriage tho!

Well it was more a joke than a serious comment, but still I consider it part and parcel. It's just little steps on the stairway to whoredom. Also, Mark E. Smith is far too ugly to advertise anything but balaclavas.

Money aside, I think its pretty easy to see why anyone would be tempted to this. I mean, I know that song has been used to sell coke by the tankerload, but its a pretty iconic little piece of music. Hum the first few bars of it and most people will recognise it straight away. Now if someone came up to you and said "hey, I reckon you have the talent to write an equally infectious piece of ear candy", you'd probably be pretty flattered and I think musicians more than most people are suceptible to a little ego massage. After all, you can't deny most artists want to leave some kind of legacy, and the idea that people might still be humming a tune they wrote in 50 years time is pretty appealing.

There's this really good protest song by some dude (vague) called Coke Is The Drink Of The Death Squads. It's awesome, I'll try and find it, think it's somewhere on my computer.

i've no real problem with this.... in fact, i've more problem with artists letting their music be used for films or tv. he's been asked to write a song specifically, the same way as you'd be asked to write a soundtrack... totally different kettle of fish to letting your already written song be used in a different fashion in my opinion, like
