Over two years ago I promised a former house mate that if she ever got married I'd DJ at her wedding. Well the big day is happening in September and I don't know what to do. This is pretty far removed fom any gig I've ever played at before. What kind of tunes do drunken middle aged relatives expect at weddings; Abba Medleys? The Grease Megamix? I Would Walk 500 Miles? Sweet Caroline? Whigfield? Tom Jones? Westlife? The Siege of Ennis? I'm in over my head here and I need any sugestions of credible music that you imagine would appeal to a broad cross section of people of all ages. I'm gonna base my set around Motown and 60's Soul and Rock from the 60's, 70's & 80's. I'm thinking Jackson 5, Kinks, Beach Boys, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Jackie Wilson, Beatles, Stones, Clash, Cure and that kind of thing? Any Suggestions? Also what passes for credible contemporary pop now-a-days?

I would chuck in some latin stuff, just that's really easy to dance to but not cheesy. Sargeant Garcia is good especially his third album La Semilla Escondida If I was asked to DJ at a wedding, I'd just avoid the cheese. f**k it, give them something to dance to instead of sing along and jump: motown, upbeat rat pack era s**t, buena vista, samba, salsa, latin jazz, Prince, early Madonna, some Bic Runga sloweeez, Beyonce, that kind of thang.

An extended noise set based around Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt material interspersed with classic novelty hits such at Bob the Builder, the teletubbies, Mr. Blobby and that f**king James Blunt song.

Can't go to far wrong with that really, especially the motown/soul stuff, might wait til people are really drunk to break out the Clash though, might be seen as having a touch too much agrro for a wedding. Uses the Cure and Stones with descernment too. Even playing modern-ish pop can be a bit of a risk because theres a lot of people over 35 who haven't really bought an album in years. Other suggestions that won't upset the relatives, most people like and won't drive you insane either (yes its cheesy and stupidly obvious, but thats the point): Blondie - Heart of Glass (actually you can get away with playing half the "best of") David Bowie - Golden Years Bangles - Walk like an Egyptian Human League - Love Action, Open your heart ("Don't you want me baby" is better known, but perhaps not exactly lyrically appropriate) Early Madonna - Holiday, Like a Prayer, Material girl etc. Elvis Presley - take your pick! He's recorded loads of love songs which is handy. Prince - Raspberry Beret, Little Red Corvette The Troggs - With girl a like you Nina Simone - My Baby just cares for me Orange Juice - Rip it up Vince Clark synthpop (Depeche Mode - Just can't get enough, Yazoo) Early 50s rock and roll - Chuck Berry, Bo Diddely, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Bobby Fuller Four, etc. You get the idea, its fun, most people can dance to it, and also each track is very short. 60s Girl pop - Sandie shaw, Ronnettes, Dusty Springfield, etc. Disco! - Kool and the Gang, Chic, Sister Sledge, Donna Summer etc. - leads nicely on from motown stuff and setting up this kind of groove may let you get away with some old skool hip hop, e.g. Rappers Delight. Modern-ish stuff you might try: Rachel Stevens: Some girls Kylie - I Believe in you (can't get you out of my head is great but too stark sounding for a wedding) S-Club 7 - Reach (drop it between motown tracks, it has that kind of feel) Girls Aloud - "Jump" or "Love Machine" Destinys Child - Bootylicious Beyonce - Crazy in Love Sugababes - round, round (actually sugababes are kinda edgy for a pop band so use discretion, can't imagine the lyric "need you like a hole in the head" being too appropriate) Outkast - hey ya Seelenluft - Mes Amis (no-one will know it, but its so gloriously OTT silly and danceable you might get away with it. Adult. - Blank eyed, nose bleed (just kidding, you'll never get away with this one, the brides mum will personally throttle you )

i think the first thing you should do is ask her what sort of music she wants and if she has any requests... it'll all fall in to place after that

Half Man Half Biscuit - I hate Nervys Hughes. They'll all be too pissed to notice anyway.

i feel ur fear. i dj-ed at two weddings - one was a catastrophe, one was a great night out what works is getting the bride and groom to give u a list of 100 tunes THEY want to hear. this works 2 ways - its their big day so u keep them happy and u also have a tailormade excuse for the drunk aunt who wants barry manilow or the pimply nephew who wants 50 cent. failing that, drink copious amounts of alchol, bring a mic and do your best mobile DJ impersonation

I had this same dilema last week as I dj'ed at my friends 21st on saturday, trust me any mix you will have prepared yourself will go striaght out the window. my friend advised me just to stick to his/my tastes in music, any good hip/hop, Rock, punk, soul, funk etc.. but this did'nt work for too long. some of the stuff that went real well were things like: Steppenwolf-Born to be wild Clash- rock the casbah/London Calling Martha and the vandellas-nowhere to run Any Marvin Gaye Any Jacko Nena-99 red balloons RHCP-Give it away madness- baggy trousers julette and licks- your speakin my llanguage Kaisers- I predict a riot Snoop Dogg- Beautiful Common-Go Dexys Midnight Runners-Come on Eileen then a mix of things like Public enemy,Outkast, Kool and the gang, DJ shadow, 2pac, Jayz etc.. you will need alot of chart pop as the kids will request it all, eg. Wayne wonder, B2K, Omarion once you play it once you will be continually asked for the rest of the night EDIT: the funniest part of the night was after my set, my friend put BAD Brains Playing on his Ipod through my mixer, cleared the danced floor instantly, HA HA
