Hmmm... It's a tough list to nail. Irish top tens invariably cover too many genres, which is a major problem with all these ' A TO Z of the top 30 best Irish songs... Ever ( As chosen by Tom Dunne ) ' . People naturally assume Irish music is crap because every one of these contains the same songs, or forces the listener into listening to Sharon Shaonnon followed by Whipping Boy and the like... Anyway, my list, based on my opinions and chosen by me, follows : My List 1 : A House - Possibly the most critically acclaimed band we've ever produced, there was no bigger Irish band in the UK in 1991/92 ( They had to ask BBC1 NOT to playlist them as they had distribution problems and too many people attempted to buy their record - At the time BBC had playlisted FIVE songs from the' I Am The Greatest ' Album!! .. Perfect Introduction album ' I Want too Much ' .. Song for iPod ' Take it easy on me ' or ' Thirteen wonderful love songs ' 2 : Whipping Boy - Well, everyone knows these guys now. Massive record deal, jools holland appearances, live MTV show.. What happened?? Who knows, buy ' Heartworm IS the best Irish album ever ' Song to discover ' Tripped ' or '' Twinkle ' 3 : The Frank and Walters - More to these guys than just boisterous, Bermuda shorts pop. Check out the last album ' Glass ' for some heavy Kraftwerk stylings. Buy the best of, go to the next Whelans gig ( Dress light ) and get ' Indian Ocean ' on your iPod.. 4 : Brian - Little known inspired anti-pop. If I said he sounds like Ian Broudie you might remember him, but if you did then you've got it all wrong cause he sounds like The Field Mice. Irish single of the Century ' Turn your lights on baby ' . Album to discover ' Understand '. 5 : David Kitt - Often overlooked but still internationally respected, David Kitt is easily the most innovative and exciting of his ilk. Get to a gig to appreciate it fully, get a version of ' Dancing in the moonlight ' onto your MP3 yokey and buy Small Moments, his best album 6 : Power of Dreams - Literally huge in Japan, get your sweaty mitts onto ' Immigrants , emigrants and I ' and while you're listening to it copy ' Stay ' to your pod and delete everything else 7 : Jape - Surprise new entry, but I am running out of bands. Genuine chemical-folk ( These are all copyrighted terms folks ) ' The monkeys in the Zoo ' is a classic waiting to happen. get your digital claws into ' To The Sea ' for some serious aural pleasure 8 : U2 - Yeayy!!! The Big Guns!! .. Still got it, and surprised me last week with a belter. If you've never heard of these guys (??) try out ' Actung Baby ' for some cool shades. Best moment is still ' Heartland ' from Rattle and Hum. ( Esp the ' Thumb a lift there edge ' bit ) 9 : Rollerskate Skinny - Curious mixture of every noise known to man all shoved onto a cd and delivered louder than loud itself .., Obviously ' Horsedrawn wishes' is the album that best captures them, but maybe that's just because ' Speed to my side ' is on it 10 Redneck Manifesto / Dave Couse : These two boys are already mentioned ( Couse=A House AND Richie Redneck=Jape ) but individually they are great. Anyone who saw Couse in Whelans last week will know that his ' Batman and Robin ; song IS going to be a worldwide hit whilst ' We've still got it ' ( And it's amazing video ) from the Festo is brillo ( Although it won't shine pots ) The end...

1. U2 (immense, however cynical you are) 2. Thin Lizzy (A pivital band in Irish rocklore!) 3. The Undertones ( Sheer raw energy - few have ever equalled it) 4. The Frames (Led a different kind of revolution in Irish music terms but positive none the less!) 5. The Stunning (Some fantastic songs - so should have been bigger) 6. Ash (Love em or hate 1977 is a classic and they have kept doing it!) 7. Whipping Boy (The Ultimate Irish Cult band in that few ever really realised how good they were and how respected worldwide they were until they werent around anymore!) 8. Therapy (kind of sad their demise but should prove important in the annals of Irish rock history) 9. Snow Patrol (a lesson of perserverance - unsure of what place they will take in history but Final Straw is one of best Irish albums of the last 10 years) 10. Bell X1 (Slightly controversial but I so hope that one day the shadoow of Rice will leave Noonan & co and people will actually realise how bloody good a bad they have become - new album could do that!)

sinead o'connor isn't a band. either is Christy moore. ten speed racer? jape? into paradise? good - but not the best ever, surely? jesus. it is pretty embarrasing.
