Erol Alkan is one of my favourite DJs on the planet. Most people know him as an electro DJ but he's also the best indie DJ I've ever heard. If you ever find yourself in London on a Monday night be sure to check out his cub night Trash in the End (www.trashclub.co.uk) Or you could check out a live mix from Trash that he did back in January http://real.the-end.co.uk/ramgen/the-end/trash/erol_trashmix02-05.rm Just check out the playlist, it's a far cry from Whelans on a Friday night; 01 Interpol - Evil 02 Joy Division - Shadowplay 03 Bloc Party - Banquet 04 Cazals - Poor Innocent Boys (Demo) 05 Whitey - YUH2BM 06 LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing In My House 07 Daft Punk - Human After All 08 Soulwax - E Talking (Nite Version) 09 Death From Above 1979 - Blood On Our Hands (Justice Remix) 10 The Kills - No Wow 11 Franz Ferdinand - This Ffffire 12 The Long Blondes - Giddy Stratospheres 13 White Rose Movement - Love Is A Number 14 The Cure - Boys Dont Cry (12" Mix) 15 Le Tigre - Nanny Nanny (Peaches Remix) 16 Nancy Sinatra - Boots 17 Daft Punk - Robot Rock 18 Killing Joke - Almost Red 19 Bloc Party - She's Hearing Voices (Erol Alkan's Calling Your Dub) 20 The Stone Roses - Made Of Stone 21 Kings Of Leon - Slow Nights So Long 22 The Blood Arm - Do I Have Your Attention 23 The Buzzcocks - Everybodys Happy Nowadays 24 Sons & Daughters - Johnny Cash 25 New Order - Age Of Consent 26 Joe Jackson - Steppin Out

Yeah, good stuff but hardly revelatory. Kills, Cure, Interpol, Franz, Daft Punk, Stone Roses..all the usual suspects.Bit student disco, no??? Best DJ (in a club, radio or otherwise) is Donal Dineen. A genius, if anyone can turn radio-DJing into an artform in itself it's him. He's got me into so much new stuff:The Album Leaf, To Roccoco Rot, Tarwater, Rod, Ulrich Schnauss, Icebreaker, Broken Social Scene, Alias, The Notwist.... Perfect for podcasting.

Donal's great alright.. introduced me to an awful lot of stuff. Of course they had to destroy his show by changing the schedule. John Kenny is always a treat too

That isn't an entirely representative set for Erol Alkan. I managed to catch the end of his set at Electric Picnic and was greeted by the site of an entire tent of people completely losing it and having an absolutely great time. I also think merely looking at a playlist does not reflect his carisma and his ability to create a real party atmosphere. As a DJ he doesn't like to be put into any kind of niche, although most people actually think of him as a bootlege DJ, like Soulwax. He was offered large wads of cash to do a "2 many DJs" type album but he turned it down as he doesn't merely wanto be classed a bootleg DJ either. I have a Muzik Magazine mix CD that he did in 2003 and its ace, though definitely mainly Electro oriented. Feast your eyes on this tracklist: 01 Playgroup - Make It Happen (Zongamin Mix) (Edit) 02 Mitsu - Hush 03 Duran Duran - Girls On Film (Night Version) 04 The Faint - The Conductor (Thin White Duke Remix) (Erol Alkan Re-Edit) 05 Codec & Flexor - Crazy Girls Make My Heart Go Boom Boom 06 Headman - It Rough (Chicken Lips Mix) 07 Benny Bennasi / Goldfrapp - Train (Ewan Pearson Dub Mix) / Satisfaction (Acapella) 08 Grand Popo Football Club - Men Are Not Nice Guys (Goldrun Remix) 09 Gillieron and McArthur- Now It's Dark 10 Kiko / Alex Gopher - Italomatic (Kiko & The Hacker Remix) / Party People (Acapella) 11 Ferenc - Yes Sir I Can Hardcore 12 Archigram - Doggystyle 13 Uminski - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger I agree that Donal Dineen is definitely the best Radio DJ and have listened to his show for years discovering great stuff along the way, but I'm not sure if he'd match Erol Alkan as a party DJ. Of course the best of the lot for ripping it up old skool block party style (as opposed to Bloc Party) is still Grandmaster Flash.

Although I have to thank Donal for exposing me to an awful lot of quality music over the years (If he wasn't presenting No Disco when I was an impressionable teenager God know's what I'd be listening to now), he's not the most consistent club DJ in the world. The last time I saw him play Galway he was very poor. He kept playing boring ten minute minimal house records with absolutely no attempt to mix them. I've seen him three times and only once was I impressed and even then I only caught the last fifteen minutes of his set so god knows what he was playing before that. As for Grandmaster Flash he was atrocious at Electric Picnic. He was playing 50 Cent, Beyonce, Nina Sky, all kinds of sh*te. Half the time he wasn't even playing, his roadie was DJing and he was just shouting at the crowd. If you want to check out Flash's natural successor try and catch Dexter from the avalanches. The man's got serious skills (2'nd place in the world DMCs) and last time I saw him his set included everything from Jimi Hendrix, Snoop Dogg, Fischerspooner, Jackson 5, Andy C & Shimion, Missy Elliott, Moondog, Cypress Hill, QOTSA, Bob Marley and Square Pusher to DJ Zinc and it was all pefecly mixed. My personal highlghts were when he kept mixing Aphex Twin's Windowlicker into System Of A Down's Chop Suey and when he had Rick James's Superfreak and the Timo Mass remix of Dooms Night playing at the same time.

DJ Dexter and The Avalanches do indeed rock, but when the hell is that 2nd album ever gonna come out? Flash did do a lot shouting at the crowd and playing a lot of mainstream tunes at electric picnic alright and I would have liked something a slightly more interesting track selection, but he certainly seemed to get the crowd going didn't he? I certainly enjoyed it personally. Isn't that what he basically always aims to do? block party DJ rather than turntable gymnast?

I don't know. I've seen BP at Death Disco a few times and he just played the greatest hits of the 60s. They were all good tunes but he didn't play anything I hadn't heard before. I was on the Guest List but if I'd payed a tenner I would have felt fairly short changed. After Bloc Party played Dublin in January I went to see Dandelion in The Globe and I much preferred her set. I recognised less than 10 songs in 2 hours. It's the only time where I've gone to a club where someone's played so much music that I hadn't heard before but I'd love to hear again.

Not really. When he started playing back in the 70s he was all about skills. He was always boasting about how nice he was on the cut. I didn't expect to be blown away by his technical skills but still I didn't expect him to just play top 30 hits. Back in the day when he was playing block partys in the Bronx he was playing Apache, It's Just Begun, Trans Euro Express, Johnny The Fox, The Mexican, Funky Drummer, Dance To The Drummers Beat etc. They weren't lowest common denominator pop songs, they were quality tunes. Being a Block Party DJ is about rocking the crowd but considering the callibre of music fan that went to electric picnic I think he could have got away with a lot more. I mean they were there to see Jurassic 5 so they must have had a knowledge of hip hop that extends beyond what gets played in Copper Face Jacks?

Er, he's dead. He can't mix either. (kidding! great radio DJ, but not exactly a ripping it up on the decks and destroying the dance floor kinda guy?) Stoller, I agree, Flash could have pushed the envelope more. Especially since a lot of the other DJs were playing far more eclectic sets and getting a good reaction. I can't deny I had a great time though! But then again, I like Beyonce and even have a soft spot for that Nina Sky track! (50 cent is utter pants though.)

DJ Shadow is good, but his stuff kinda strikes me as being a bit too downbeat and introspective to be anything other than something you listen to on your own with headphones, unless the mood of that mix is different and more "danceable" than his own material?

its definitely more... eh "groovy" but youre right, most of his stuff is mainly (excellent) headphone listening. Mind you a fewof my friends have seen him play and said it was amazing, very energetic, (how can it not be when he has songs like "Organ Donor" to pull out of the bag). Those gigs though were probably more like "raves" (dont like using that word) than gigs as such. As in a whole lotta people getting off, and just grooving on the music (and visuals). Right i'll stop rambling, Product Placement its definitely worth checking out though.

DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist did two tours called Brain Freeze and Product Placement where they did funk 45 sets. I always get the two of them mixed up but I saw one DVD where Shadow was juggling two "pocket discs" (they're promotional discs that are about half the size of a 7" single). While as a producer some of his stuff is quite down tempo when it comes to DJing he's well able to rock a party.
