I was reading an interesting thread on www.drownedinsound.com about mp3 players and ipods in particular. Some survey in the uk says that the average user only fills 5% of their player and the general consensus is that these are only fashion accessories and people want to be seen with the white earphones and even if you do fill your player will you ever listen to everything. Personally, I love my ipod and use it every day. Its got over 20 gigs on it and even though I haven't listened to lots of stuff I can try something new every now and then. On a bus to arklow last night I managed to get through the M.I.A. album and boards of canada 'music has the right to children.' I find if I'm in the mood i'll listen to something I haven't in a while rather than sticking on bloc party or something current like that. It also saves a ton of space and I broke those stupid earphones ages ago. The only problems i've had were using itunes (It never installed and i now use ephpod) and the battery power which is three hours max now but the player is two years old and I will get the battery replaced soon.

I've one of those creative zen things and i changed the head-phones from the origional white to an ordinary black pair to avoid drawin attention to the E300 that was in my coat pocket!!! I find that I'm not bothered puttin any more music on it cause the more music i've on it the more i want to change song! Myself and the lads were chattin about this and they said that they always listen to the same stuff on theirs no matter how many thousand tracks they have on it!!!

That's why the party shuffle option on the ipod is so cool. When it skips through all your artists, you rediscover the forgotten magic of certain acts. I usually just listen to an album all the way through, selecting one as I walk to the bus stop and a different one when coming home on the bus. Or the same one, depending on mood I'm in or how good the album is. I have a 40GB ipod and its not full up yet but its great to have the option of such varied music with a simple click n' scroll. As for earphones, I got rid of my white apple one's about two years ago and have always used the big ear muff type ones for more comfort and better sound.

...and thats another reason why i wish i didnt have glasses, the big earphones press my ear into the glasses frame, kinda sore and very annoying, i find i usually listen to the same albums too, (40 gigger as well) but its great to have the option to put on almost anything you feel like, i just started making playlists too, and theyre quite good, i usually just go through all my songs, and stick on good ones at random, so theres always a few surprises!

There is a club in london that specialises in this! Basically you get 15 mins to play your pre-mixed set and then at the end of the night there is a vote for the best mp3jay. Sounds like a laugh, wonder if it would suit Dublin.
