"Godlike Genius Award – New Order" - seems pretty appropriate alright, if a little sacrilegious (the title of the award that is)

The libertines would be no bodies if there off stage behaviour wasnt so "Rock and Roll" what a joke it is when you are hailed as the best band in britian for sloppy musicianship, terrible singing and disgracefull live performances. Even if they do have talent ( a point which i would debate) they waste it by being skaged out of it. NME only gave them that award to further boost there profile because the Pete Doherty soap opra sells there magazine for them. They dont really care about the music NME just want to feed Doherty up on hyperbols, fame, aclaim etc so that he'll continue his spiral and make them a s**t load of money. Ulitmite goal= kill doherty

Well i do agree that doherty is definitely being used by nme to sell more mags but to say that he has no talent is extreme you should check out babyshambles website i think it babyshambles.net but it comes on a google search. Anyway they have some free downloads there check out a song called arcady its great. Carl Barat and the other two collected the award pete was a no show.

I stayed for the whole thing becasue it was cold and we were near a fire at the top of the hill, all that s**t about lay lines was nuts. Then when he said that the night was "groovy" everyone around me started laughing. Fireworks were good though, nice how he only really went into top gear when he was live on BBC 1.

Best British Band – The Libertines Oh f**k off, bunch of over-rated, over-hyped cretins. The way Carl Barat Pulled the microphone away from the drummer in the middle of his thank-you speech..nice chap. Godlike Genius Award – New Order Their best days are behind them but thoroughly deserving of their award. Best Album – Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Franz Ferdinand’ No complaints here. Hard to fault this band even if they have scandalously stolen their sound wholesale from Gang Of Four Best Event – Paul McCartney/Glastonbury 2004 What???? Must be some sort of joke!!! Best Live Band – Muse:An utterly ridiculous band Best New Band – Razorlight Crushingly mediocre but 'Up All Night'track is pretty good, yet hardly warrants all the attention they are getting. Best Solo Artist – Graham Coxon: Interesting choice, Albarn is an infinitely more talented songwriter though Best Track – Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Take Me Out’ Sick of this song, 'Michael' is better. Best International Band – The Killers Great band The Phillip Hall Radar Award – Kaiser Chiefs Awful. Paul Weller should sue. Best Video – Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Hanging in there Best Music DVD – Oasis’ ‘Definitely Maybe’ Yawn Best Film – ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ Spiderman 2 was also in this category!!!!!????? Spiderman 2!!!! Best TV Show – ‘Little Britain’ Anyone else find this show condescending, offensive and extremely unfunny??

Of course the Libertines should have won best band. The discourse this has created is vindication of that. The Libertines are a great band, with great songwriting abilities and opened up the new crop of British atrists to the wider public with far more effect than Franz Ferdinand. Carl Barat's acceptance speach, however displayed how truly public they have become, using the platform to natter on about Pete Doherty, which was no place or time to do so. I'm also glad that Muse won best live act. This is a reward for their tight musicianship and energy and drama, which I predicted would lose out to a more avant garde performance. Thankfully, I was wrong. Matt Bellamy is probably the most talented guitarist that's developed in a long time. Razorlight? Please. Apart from Borrell having the most punchable face in rock music, their preformances and songs are just not up to scratch. They've got this far on rhetoric and neck. Kasabian should have won. You forgot the John Peel award for innovation. Rubbish album, but exciting ideas. Kudos for the democratisation of indie that Doherty then fell off.

Antistar or anti-everything? Una's right, Matthew Bellamy is incredibly talented. Nothing beats seeing him bash away at his keyboard live. And look, everybody has their own opinion on bands, doesn't mean they're good or bad. Each of those bands stands out for me because though I'm not a huge fan of any in particular (except muse) each is unique and individual in their own way. Each stands out for some reason, the kind of group/artist you will instantly recognise and doesn't fade into the interminable line of "the" bands.

Compared to the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards, the NME's came across as a bit tame, staid, uniform and sober. Lots of rockers acting drunk as opposed to being completely smashed out of their minds.

My international band category would've included The Walkmen I think. I was talking to Gordy from Bloc Party on Friday (they had performed at the NME awards the night before) and he said the ceremony was a bit iffy, considering it was mainly about a scene congradulating itself. The Bravery's performance was quite naff. Good track though.

you either like the Libertines or not, me I think its a bit of a circus to be honest, but whoever was critical of the acceptance speech with Carl pulling the Mike of the other fella, just screamed total w**ker ! anyone else have any thoughts. Plenty of winners I wouldnt have chosen myself but hey, what do I know !

Its all subjective blah blah blah .... but the point i was making about the libertines and Doherty is that the acclaim and awards etc etc is not because they are an amazing band worthy of such lofty things but because they are an easily marketed cliche. I also would like to take Una up on the Walkmen, what exactly did you like about them. I bought the album listened to it 5 timea and hated it I then read some good reviews so i gave it another 5 goes and still hated it. The songs lack structure the atmospheric guitar parts just come in out of nowhere and suddenly leave the mix. The vocals meander around and go nowhere. They sound like a punk band trying to play prog rock.

does anyone care about awards? seriously? anyone who is involved in these things knows its a marketing and publicity tool for NME to complement the marketing and publicity tools of the music industry. its all bollix and i wouldn't buy an album from a band because of an award or a rating in a magazine. would you?

I wouldn't buy an album simply because a band won an award, especially an NME award. But events like Mercury Music Prize highlight really good acts every year. And I would buy an album because of a rating in a magazine, obviously not rushing out to buy it just because it rated 5 stars. I look do some background checking on the act, read various reviews and maybe check out some mp3s. But the whole point in reading reviews is to get a futher insight into an album and discover whether it might be worth buying or not.

Personally I don't listen to the radio or watch tv much. or at all really. So the only way I find out about the music about which I am so passionate is word of mouth, or reading reviews, which amounts to much of the same thing. If I keep reading great reviews of an artist I will seriously consider buying the album. If everybody thought the way you do kierry, what would be the point in reviewing at all? That's what they're there for. That's (in a large part) what Cluas is for eh?
