Hi all, Just wondering how you would rate this list in the Telegraph? There's a good few songs I wouldn't know if they bit me on the backside but I thought the top 10 was great-Pet Shop Boys at number two, classic!! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2004/11/20/bmcovercont20.xml

Ok, I think Mindy Smith's version of 'Jolene' is definitive, so One Dove can stick it. I have never though Cash's version of 'One' was all that great. I suspect its one of those tracks that Rock Fans like to point to in a some kind of attempt to prove that they weren't the ones who used to sneer at the great man. Enough with Ryan Adams already. He's rubbish. Here are a few I think should have made the cut 1) William Shatner - 'Common People' (Pulp) 2) Luke Bloom - 'I Need Love' (LL Cool J) 3) Elbow - 'Independent Woman' (Destinys Child) 4) Pat Boone - 'Its a long way to the Top' (AC/DC) 5) Van Morrison - 'Its not easy being Green' (Kermit The Frog) 6) U2 - 'Unchained Melody' (Righteous Brothers) 7) Jackie Wilson - 'Danny Boy' (Traditional) 8) Brad Meldhu - 'Paranoid Android' (Radiohead) 9) John R Cash / Joe Strummer - 'Redemption' Song (Bob Marley) 10) Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 'I Feel Love' (Donna Summer)

Interesting list, never realised Happy Mondays "Step On" was a cover. Overall a pretty good list. The Senor Coconut covers of Kraftwerk are inspired and I have had the opportunity to see it live. Great stuff, their version of "Autobahn" is guaranteed to make you smile. That said if I was going to pick a Kraftwerk Cover, it would be The Balenescu Quartets version of "Computer Love" Joss Stone covering "Fell in love with a boy"? - ugh, hated this, no way it would make it into my list. MOR drivel and a horrible parody of what people think Soul is about. Trickys version of Public Enemys "Black Steel" is pretty good, but unremarkable overall. Good, but not sure if it would be Top 50 material. Saint Ettienne Covering Neil Youngs "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" - Absolute classic. Probably one of the best things Saint Ettiene have ever done. Makes me wanna listen to "Foxbase Alpha" again. I dont think anyone is gonna argue with the choice of Jeff Buckley singing "Hallelujah." and while Hendrix's version of "All along the Watchtower" might not be number one for me personally, theres no denying its a brilliant track

Guns N Roses - "Live & Let Die" shoulda been in there. HIM - "Wicked Game" or "Dont Fear The Reaper" shoulda been in there. But other than that, it's a decent list from about 20 up to 1... Very interesting indeed.

Although I hated the band, I loved the cover of Madonnas Borderline by Something Happens.

for some great trad covers check out the Chieftans Hibernian Rhapsody. Not to be readily compared with the type of stuff mentioned in the thread so far but equally deserving of merit for sheer musical genious and wonderful fun (Bohemian Rhpasody is a gem) (side note: anyone remember ministrys version of lay lady lay? scary stuff.) Mike Patton does a great Frank Sinatra live sometimes, but Easy has to be the best case I've seen of a great song performed weakly on the original and given the belt of whiskey/whatever your having to liven it up. (I always thought the U2 version of everlasting love sounded like what I'm about to hear on my way home from work on Grafton St.! hah. sorry, just my warped mind.)

I can't believe more Johnny Cash one's weren't mentioned. His take of Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat' is sublime and so is his stunning version of Loudon Wainwright's 'The Man Who Couldn't Cry'. Nevermind buying those compliation cd's on sale now of artists who do cover versions, just buy the Johnny Cash 'Unearthed' box set.

Sticking a load of entries in by the same artist would have made the list extremely unbalanced and uninteresting.

I suppose so but they are classic tracks and well worth a mention here if anyone remotely likes 'The Man In Black'

I would really encourage people to start listening to pre-American Recordings releases by Johnny Cash. I agree that there is some good stuff on those albums but, in my opinion, they give far too narrow a view of Mr Cash and don't showcase him properly as a songwriter. In fact, you could ignore them completely, as many mature county fans do, and still have a deep appreciation and understanding of Johnny Cash. County artists, as a rule, blend self penned songs with songs by other artists and songs that they have co-written into their sets. The concept of 'cover versions' doesn't really hold true in that genre

Ever hear Magnet with Gemma Hayes' verison of Dylans Lay Lady Lay - absolutley gorgeous. Paul Weller doing Instant Karma by John Lennon - his voice can never repeat John Lennon's but the music is spot on. And a personal favourite is David Kitt's cover version of Sonic Youths Teenage Riot - I likes it. I agree with Optimus with Guns N Roses and Live and Let Die. Rev Jules - Even if you don't like Ryan Adams you must admit his version of Wonderwall is far better than the Oasis one.

I love The Frames cover of Tim Buckley's Buzzin Fly, also Elliot Smith covering pretty much anything is alright in my book, especially Because, actually think it's better than the original. And there's always that Paddy Casey classic Hey Ya!!
