Just saw this, in shock Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru. Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the resort of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack. He was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and in recent years had also presented Home Truths on Radio 4. Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said Peel's contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable". from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3955289.stm

Terrible, terrible news. John Peel was a legend, a DJ who championed music no-one else had any time for, a DJ who defined what public broadcasting is supposed to be all about. I can't even begin to count the amount of new bands and new music I first heard about on his show. Lets not forget that he was also a great friend to Irish bands, playing new Irish music when stations here couldnt care less about it and bringing many over for sessions. RIP p

I am still in shock. He got me into The Wedding Present, House of Love and tons of other stuff. I can say honestly say he influenced my taste in music and changed my teenage years. My mother rang to tell me and said remember when you used to have me up taping stuff for you at all hours. I heard BBC played his favorite songs Teenage Kicks after they anounced his death. He will be pleased. A huge loss indeed.

I am still in shock about his death but have enjoyed listening to radio one all night long. I can honestly say the music he championed changed my life, and for the better. If I had not discovered bands like Joy Division i would never have started to play music. I had the privilige of recording songs for the John Peel show in 1989 and it was definitely something i shall be proud of for the rest of my life. Thanks John, for the music and the memories.

Strange to think how different the music world would be today if it were not for him. RIP

When I was young I had the crappest red box like radio and tape player you have ever seen. I was up late one night, flicking the dial. This music came on, unlike anything I had ever heard. I grabbed a blank tape and started recording. It was a heavy song, the speakers were vibrating. Then this deep voice came on. Never mentioned the name of the song I had half taped. Next day I played the song to my parents. "oooh turn that s**te off!". None of my friends knew what it was. I took the tape to my piano lesson and played it to my piano teacher, the only Protestant guy I knew in my childhood in Northern Ireland. I'll never forget his reaction. He reached over to his stereo and pulled out a pristine copy of Led Zeppelin 1 and played me the whole of Dazed and Confused, taking up nearly half my piano lesson. For the next 6 months, my piano lessons became more and more about Victor playing me music from his collection. I loved that guy. I was distraught when he told me that he was stopping teaching piano. Anyway, the DJ that night was John Peel. John RIP

I've searched a lot on bands and he seemed to have done a pile load of sessions with bands and singers before they got famous like nick cave and u2, sounds like the church'll be packed! I have to hear the one with The Birthday Party, anyone know where I'll get one? I'm sure he was better than Casey Casem who dominated my airwaves as a kid!

A legendary English Radio DJ who brought alot of peoples attentions towards the less famous bands. bands that were credible and werent just fads or repetetive. Bands like the Manics and such. He was, as someone has already said, a "champion". He loved music in the purest way possible, and made it his life to turn the rest of us on to the same... RIP

Alcopop, Birthday Party Peel Sessions - there were two, I think - were released on a British imprint called Strange Fruit records. I bought them years ago, I reckon you can still get them easily enough. As a last resort, you could try ebay or downloading them from limewire or somewhere.

Just thought you folks might be interested to know that Snow Patrol have made their acoustic version of The Undertones "Teenage Kicks" available for free download in memory of John Peel. You can get it from their site www.snowpatrol.net or follow this link: http://www.culturedeluxe.com/songdesc.asp?id=4803
