Best song in the world ever ? Hmm, sounds like a Cluas Poll or a record company cash in. Ever, I can't deal with. Right now, lets see... Come on Funny Feelin' - Rodney Crowell Long Black Train - Josh Turner Its Five O'Clock Somewhere - Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett Did I say that my soul was born below the Mason/Dixie line ?

Thats a tough question, greatest song ever? Never really thought of it that way, seems kinda dogmatic to pick three and say they are the best when songs are kind of personal things. I think great songs sometimes only strike a chord with a few people. I can't even pick three songs that three that are my all time favourite, and where does that leave instrumental pieces without vocals? They can be just as emotive, be it a symphony or the latest club track. Anyway I'll try and stop ranting and list some tracks that come to mind, cann't limit it to three and not neccsarily "all time favourites" though: Life is Sweet - The Chemical Brothers (I like all their stuff, but this one of the few tracks of theirs that can be considered a "song" as such, its also special to me because it was also the first track of theirs I ever heard and finally "got" dance music, Mainly because its such an effective bridge between dance and rock) Happy Hour - Felix Da Housecat (shallow, meaningless, fun!) This is the day - The The (token angsty song) Solex - Solex All lickety split (discovered Solex on No Disco at a time when I was starting to feel cynical and jaded about music, this just sounded so fresh it renewed my enthusiasm for music. Bought the album its taken from at the same time as a copy of the PC game Civilisation 2, spent the next three months playing Civ2 while listening to this album, can't listen to it now without thinking of little pieces moving across the screen and how I'm going to conquer the world) The Fly - U2 (more nostalgia than anything else, used to love it as a teenager, still sounds great) Ask tomorrow and the list will probably be different, depending on what mood I'm in. It probably gives you a better insight into my twisted little mind to list the tracks that I can't stop listening to at the moment, these would be: This is the Excuse/NY Excuse - Soulwax (currently only realeased on limited white label, but freely available on the internet, try http://boomselection.info/) Home in your Heart - Solomon Burke (from a Mojo cover CD I got ages ago, can't stop listening to it) What She Wants - Felix Da Housecat feat. James Murphy The Back of Love - Echo and the Bunnymen (they really were better than U2, weren't they?) Shoes off, Boots On - LUV (pure cheese which I can not defend, a Dutch Abba clone. All the guilty pleasure of listening to Abba without actually listening to Abba. Don't know why I find this so addictive, I was never a big Abba fan) So after aimlessly rambling on for ages, I guess what I'm trying to say is I can't pick a greatest song, could have said that in two lines at the start I suppose.

Message in a Bottle - The Police You can say what you like about Sting, but no one can deny that The Police had some classic singles, and this is a corker. I always think this song is like a masterclass in rock songwriting - a superb riff, great dynamics, and three first class musicians at their peak. With or Without You - U2 Still one of my all time favourite U2 songs, this one has all those classic U2 ingredients we know and love...the slow burning intro, Edge's trademark shimmering guitar, and the usual climactic hollering from His Bononess. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana I really don't need to expand on this, do I ?

binokular makes some good points there, heres my efforts Strawberry Fields. I think even if it were played as an instrumental to someone from far outside the world of western culture that we inhabit this one would hit a nerve/ emotion. it almost makes me cry. jsut almost. "Buttercup", cant remember the name of the group, i know they were English, its the last song on Something about Mary, have to get to google to get the full details! and from the modern era for the sake of it, lets say, oooh, auh, "Under the Bridge" by RHCP, for the week thats in it and all. it is a great tune anyway,

That would be "Build me up Buttercup". I always thought that was by the temptations, turns out they do their own version of the song, but the one on the sountrack is by the The Foundations. I don't know who recorded it originally or who wrote it. Anyone know? This is gonna be bugging me for ages until I find out and its always difficult when it comes to soul as often a song would be written and given to several artists on the same label! Great song though, if it doesn't make you smile, you probably don't have a pulse.

Don't suppose you could tell me who wrote dark end of the street. It's probably really obvious but no one seems to know who wrote it. It's been wrecking my head for ages

Dark end of the street was written by Stax sessioneers Dan Penn and Chips Moman, though could havebeen working for another studio when they wrote it. The original James Carr version is definitely worth downloading... For best song ever (at the moment, of course)... Talking Head's - Heaven.. Is the everafter a place of endless life, glory, love, experience, rebirth?....No. Just "a place where nothing ever happens". Sublime.

Yeah Fisherman's Blues is a Frickin Masterpiece, I play it all the time with my brothers when we get together for a jam. As for Subterranean Homesick Blues- Legendary. Jesus what am I doing here?! My leaving Cert starts in about 13 hours, Bloody hell.

hmmmmmmm....i can pick 3? Can't say what's BEST (best must, at the end of the day, be relative eh?) but these might just be my all time favorites... Tom Waits - Whistle Down The Wind REM - Electrolite Radiohead- Paranoid Android oh wait, there's no women on that list, so: Patsy Cline- Crazy and i'd have to agree with Once in a Lifetime and Fisherman's Blues as being WAY up there...and i have to mention the yeah yeah yeahs' "maps" as a new classic and easily the best love song of 2003 (but i digress...). kisses from the misses, -h. (and yes this is my third post in an hour, but i've just stumbled onto this site and am enjoying myself immensely)

That's just way too difficult. Let me think - I no as soon as i get off computer im going 2 think of loads bt here it goes. Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac Parisienne Walkways/Still got the Blues- Gary Moore Carry Home - mark Lanegan coupla Turn songs can't think of names Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues (it's soppy but my god if someone sang that to me...) While My Guitar Gently Weeps and for some unknown reason Blackbird - Beatles Throw It All - Jeff Lang Couple of Gov't Mule songs, especially from Life Before Insanity Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins Black Hole Sun and Spoonman - Soundgarden + some of Chris' solo stuff from Euphoria Morning I know I know I know there's more but I just can't think of them. Aargh this is going to drive me mad all day. Are we talking music-wise, feeling-wise, lyrics-wise or just all together-wise? Do Mogwai tracks count as songs? If so a few of them don't know names. Sorry I couldn't cut it down but there you go.
