I saw bits of 2 shows this week with people discussing music on them - one was Newsnight on BBC... there was one dude (well, I say dude, but he did actually look like Napolean Dynamite's nerdy cousin) discussing the relative merits of Duffy, arguing that she was more 'urban' & thus, more relevant than any of her contemporaries. (It might have actually been Adele he was discussing, but either way, that's kind of irrelevant).

The other was John Kelly's show on RTE (The View?).. they were talking about the U2 "3D" film - one bloke, who must be REALLY into his music, said that he only really got into U2 with their last two albums (their best 2 albums, obviously!) and that what really impressed on him from the film, was that this was just a 4 piece band playing - unlike the likes of REM who have "orchestras & backing singers" onstage with them. He did concede though, that Edge uses an array of pedals that "control things under the stage".

And there was me thinking that there was a whole army of midgets/dwarfs/persons of short stature* running around under the stage generating those effects for him. Another illusion shattered.

*what IS the politically correct term for short people these days anyway ?

That's nearly as good as Eamon Dunphy's classic cock up in his biography of U2 where he claimed that U2 invented the concept of monitors on stage ( because they came up with the wizard idea of turning one of their amps backward at a Baggot Inn gig ).

Haha, man, "urban" is a word I would love banned from music journalism. Oh yeah, "so solid crew, they're edgy so urban"

Never mind the fact that "Urban" refers to a city and these days only the wealthy can often afford to buy/rent properties in desireable city centre locations. The hoodie clad poor and underprivledged(who 35 year old male white broadsheet music journo believes to be the source of all things "edgy") live in suburban council estates.

According to Napolean Dynamite's nerdy cousin, the P.C. term for midgets these days is "vertically challenged urbanites". Proper edgy.

I wonder will REM have their orchestras and backing singers with them at Oxegen ? A bit of culture for the skangers.

Speaking of midgets shattering illusions. The first (and last) time I saw U2 I couldn't believe that little fella at the front was Bono.

Nerds, midgets, skangers & vertically challenged asian lesbians... is this the most non-P.C. thread in the history of Cluas? Or just a plot line for an Irvine Welsh play?

Yeah he traded Mazzeratzi with Inter Milan for an audience with the Pope. He wanted to let El Papa know that he was worshiping a false god.
