Is it just me or do all the new bands coming out now sound the same??
I had the radio on the other day while I was stuck in traffic for two bleedin hours and I got to the point where I wondered if it was still the same song I was hearing or was it just the same band? It turned out I had heard 3 different bands in a row that all sounded so alike I wanted to cry. I think they were all called "THE" something or others too. I guess bands are running out of good names too eh?

    Hello Kat, welcome on board.

I know what you mean. It seems like the same tune is being rehashed over and over.

Yep, The Strokes have a lot to answer for. And there's a whole new crop of them coming along (The Distractors, The Minutes etc). For something different have a look at Hybrasil, Dark Room Notes and Fight Like Apes. Of course, you won't hear them on any radio except Phantom.

Hybrasil are an excellent band, brilliant live, delorentos, channel one, butterfly explosion are other really good groups...

been honest if you really want a taste of brand new music fromm unsigned acts, cpu is decent....

The Strokes uugghhhh.....they aren't as bad as the bravery who tom dunne loves for some reason.,.....they are a bag of spanners....

yeah totally agree im 18 and i love music but it seems that new bands are sticking to the "what sells" principal instead of originality... im not in to too much new bands nowadays guess im just im getting bored of the monotinous similarity of nearly every new band on the radio, i mean im glad to see pop being given a run for its money but enough is enough, im more into the oldies thin lizzy, rainbow, led zepplin, deep purple etc.... though im sure music will eventually turn full circle again id love to see a come back of the oldie type genre............

This type of debate has been going on since the radio was invented (and before that, 'there's nothing on the steam-powered wax cylinder').

Basically: if you want to find new and interesting sounds then listen to a different show/station/genre. There are presenters out there playing new, inventive music but for commercial reasons (that Simon from Phantom usually explains very well on this board: cue Simon...) you can't expect it to always be played during daytime/drivetime shows that need to serve up comfort food.

But Donal Dineen and Cian O Ciabhain (just to name two of my fellow Munster-champions) and Pearl and Jim Carroll (on Phantom) and The Indie Hour on Anna Livia (if you're in Dublin) play plenty of new, eclectic and interesting stuff.
