The largest festival on the Protestant side of the community in the North has been called off this year because of funding problems. The Maiden Festival in Derry is a celebration of the Protestant Apprentice Boys, who shut the city gates against the forces of Catholic King James in December 1688. In the past, it has featured bluegrass music, a pageant explaining the city's history, fireworks and children's events. However, the organisers have cancelled the event for this year, saying they have become embroiled in too much red tape. The organisers of festivals in the North traditionally find themselves with a number of bureaucratic hoops to jump through and funding is often decided at the last minute and on a once-off basis.

I'm sure they had a Glorious Twelfth.
