Did anyone catch Luke Haines in Whelans? He played a great gig, better than his Galway one, according to the forum on his website. It seems there was a very poor turnout at that and he cut it short. Having been a massive fan of the Auteurs for years, I was delighted he played a few of those songs too. He hasn't lost his touch; the newer material sounds really good as well and that was just on acoustic guitar.

He was actually a good deal funnier and less grumpy than I expected too. He kept inserting mid song comments which shouldn't have worked but did. And not many people could get away with songs about Gary Glitter and the Yorkshire Ripper. I just wish he had a better turnout. I guess he's too old to be trendy but not old enough to be a legend yet.......

The strangest part of the gig might have been the support from Cowboy X. I'd be surprized if he had anything to do with their selection. Apparently they were supporting him on all his Irish dates.

I would have thought he's already a cult hero to enough people - sad to hear he had a poor crowd at both gigs. Did he play some of the better-known Auteurs songs (I was about to write 'hits')?

Yeah he did: Showgirl, New French Girlfriend, Lenny Valentino. Some stuff off Murder Park and the Bootboys too, but I don't know them as well. It flew by but I think he played a good number of songs. There's a set list on his website forum, one for his Belfast gig http://www.lukehaines.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?id=44

I think what he played was roughly similar to this. Maybe the gig suffered from a lack of PR: I didn't see any posters and I don't know if there was any feature type articles in the Ticket, just a mention in the live listings. Don't know whether there was any coverage in the Event Guide either.

Well, I'm a big fan and remember hearing about it last May and then forgetting, UNTIL NOW THAT IS!! Damn... Good to see he hasn't turned on his past, like a lot of aging artists do, as his past is a very good past indeed...

Actually, he recorded an album of selective re-interpretations of Auteur 'classics' which is well worth checking out, if only for the stomping version of Lenny Valentino...

I'll have to check that out. I'm assuming that's Das Capital. I know there's also a box set Luke Haines is Dead. All I need is the money.......
