One of the few good things about my surf trip to north spain, was I got to read Barney Hoskyns new book, 'Hotel California' which bore out two things I have always felt and frequently said,
a) Gram Parsons was a drugged up dilletante
b) The Eagles were the true creators of country rock
Its a great book, easy to read, check it out.

Whether or not the Eagles did indeed invent country rock doesn't get away from the fact that they were rubbish :P

He's pretty much scrapped the barrel of American music, especially Californian, in the past few years. If he's making ridiculous claims like The Eagles created country rock, then its probably a half-arsed attempt to put a new slant on something he's already written about far too many times for it to be interesting anymore. |

Not quite sure what your point is, or if you even have one. Criticising Hoskyns for writing about California music (he has also written books about Prince and Glam Rock) is a bit like bitching about Peter Guralnick because he writes about the Blues. Its their area of expertise. So, to save you the hassle, I'll explain.
The Eagles created Country-Rock, because they were the first band to write and record songs which could & were played on country and AM rock stations in the USA. They were artists that created a type of music which could be enjoyed equally by followers of two very different forms of music...pot smoking, free love, karmic longhairs and beer guzzling, gun toting, jesus freak rednecks. And if you know anything about American Music, you will know that this is a major feat since those types of radio station music formats are mutually exclusive. When Johnny Cash started covering rock songs on his American recordings series of albums, those records were effectively banned from Country Radio for being 'rock'. Although I did hear his version of 'Desperado' being played on a country station I had my car radio tuned to when I was in Kentucky a while ago, so the main thesis holds up in practice on the ground.

Nah, thats a bit like saying Avonmore are the true creators of milk. I don't see why the Eagles should get all the credit because they presented a diluted and re-packaged form of music which radio stations would accept. Of course American radio is always at the cutting edge of new music, and a genre isn't truly created until *they* choose to recognise it (some three years later). Like I said in my earlier post, The Eagles are certainly responsible for commercialising country-rock, a form of music which the likes of the Beatles, Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, The Band etc etc were dabbling in (far more effectively) years before The Eagles troubled the charts. |

No they weren't, not strictly. Which is why I said they dabbled.
All the above bands (as well as Gram Parsons) at times showed great musical versatility. |
