Hi all In early 2005, a fast rising, powerful & ambitious Irish band will play the Olympia. The meaning behind it is two fold. Firstly, to move outside the grasp of the monolopy of music promoters who do so little to assist hard working Irish bands & take something on themselves. Secondly & most importantly, to include 2 bands with them as support & open punters eyes to the talent which truly exists within the current crop of brilliant new Irish bands. We all know how hard you have to work to "make it". A little help never goes amiss, but sometimes you have to make your own luck & the best way to go is to "just do it". If you would support this night, please email redelephantmusic@yahoo.co.uk with your details as to how we can forward you further info and BE PART OF SOMETHING!

thats pretty hard going optimus, if you have any knowledge of the industry you will know how hard it is to get yourself out there and the post is right, you do have to just do it. Moving outside the circle of the few powerful people in this industry in Ireland is admirable & brave & should be slapped on the back. For any Irish band, the Olympia is a big committment and my hat goes of to them as its a massive financial undertaking to. I work in A&R and also have a rough idea who this is too... might not be beyond them actually. PS: Not my first post just cant remember my flippin password. Now Optimus, no more nasties!!

let me know when your feeling better optimus... I can hear the Rocky fanfare now.. "never give up"... your right though i should have said, " if you feel disillusioned, give up, your probably crap"... that should motivate people more right?

the whole post is cheesy. i presume it's an invitation to work for their street team. its good to have ambition, but i get an itch looking at this sort of thing.

the worst part is its actually true you have to just do it. im gonna have to ask though, is this a mini "play the point" so sorry, still think its a cool idea and might open up this sort of thing more bands (unsigned night at the olympia)

Well if nothing else guys its cool that we're talking about it. Kierry in answer to your question, its nothing to do with working for our "street team", we have that covered. We have not even told you guys the band yet so therefore you cant actually do ANY word of mouth other then that something is happening. We want to do this ourselves and just make moves without waiting for the MCD call. If its interpreted as cheesy then fair enough but its going to cost alot of money so we just wanted peoples feedback to it. MUTCH: "a mini play the point" its definitely not meant to be. We're just going to play this gig, advertise it as normal and give a couple of really good bands in dublin some limelight outside of the usual venues and that is no disrespect to any of those venues. But we will bill it as an Irish bands night, for want of a better phrase & want to know would people outside of the individual bands fans go thats all. Good chance this band will be signed by then anyway. Must go on a cheesy removal sweep! Thanks for all replies so far guys... Optimus, you feelin better yet?

So why wont you release the name of the band. What purpose does it serve keeping the name secret From your previous posts i presume its jove. Im not in a band, however i do put a lot of time and money into going to gigs, both small and large, so i hope you dont mind me asking what makes your band so special to deserve this effort from people so that you or the band you support can play the olympia. Is it not slightly egotistical to think that this unnamed band should deserve our attention just because they are irish, with no proof of actual talent I mean these as genuine questions ? If I thought the band deserved the attention Id support it, but I dont think a band deserves automatic support just because they are irish and trust me ive supported many an irish band in my day.

well im going for the craic anyway. while we can still enjoy music. soon macdowel (the rotweiler) will insist we only listen to his type of music, what do d4 dinner party heads like, kenny g? ronan keating? opera,.....whatever. hey i take back my "mini play the point" jibe that was unnecessary and unfair. its just that today is tuesday. my reasoning ability are off most tuesdays. best of luck. theres enough bands in Dublin (over 500 applicants for HWCH!!!) so out of that 2000 ish (500-ish X 4-ish)alone you should get alot of takers.

very fair. its a very interesting concept. it would also be very nice for any dublin band to play the olympia. a definite drawback... fans of most small bands are not interested in paying 15-20 euro to see their bands when they can see them in whelans or the village or the music centre for less than a tenner... and personally i dont see the problem with any of the above venues. still fair play to you, its a big undertaking, hope it goes well.

Go East and spend your money on playing in Japan, Holland or Germany. Playing the Olympia is ambitious and fair play to you but it is just one night. You may end up more bitter and cynical about the music scene in Ireland if hardly anyone turns up. Then again you could be set for world domination.

the sound is always great in the olympia, except sometimes for the support acts...mysterious that one, isnt it!!!(espc. Future Kings of Spain supporting Muse this year, May or March) go for it. Bitterness and cynicism are probably gonna hit you anyway so may as well be after a high like that. What you need is a webcast, an arrest, a helicopter on fire...something to make it one of those things that *nobends say is a "i was there" moment. (note muse reference above, not excluding myself from the *nobend category here!!!) (*note spelling: not technically a curse to corrupt young minds)

Listen guys, i will answer anything ye put up and to say we're overwhelmed by the response is putting it mildly. KLOOTFAN: Fair points. ANSWERS: I am not saying that we're so special. I am putting something on in the Olympia. We consider ourselves no different to any other Hard Working Band out there, we’re just willing to push the boat out a little & yes there is no guarantee anything will come of it. As MUTCH mentioned earlier, "unsigned night"?? Not going that way but if it works wouldn’t it be great to open up that avenue. Is it not good that a band, whoever they may be, is looking to headline a super venue not because they think their special but because they believe it can only be good for them & Irish bands? You will have had plenty of time to see the bands during 2003 & 2004 & you will have time to see them before the gig in the Olympia to make your own minds up so when the bill is announced, some of you will be going to support bands you probably will know. It’s also got to be a good night out right. We're looking at 15 euro & for four bands that’s not bad. MICK: Yes you can go & see your band in the various venues around town & THEY ARE GOOD venues & there is nothing wrong with them, but if we can draw some attention to this night, and more importantly draw some attention to the bands playing, then surely it’s a good thing? The Olympia is a super venue & maybe this will help a little. Much appreciate again all the feedback, keep it coming and email the flippin address if you want info when everything is decided will ye!! KLOOTFAN: No comment on band...wink... yet!!

Hands up to you for creating the debate... its super to watch. See we are alive. As mentioned earlier guys I work in A&R & do now know who this band is. Am not going to speak up for you Carlsberg, indifference is key, but I am going to say the band in question is probably just capable of pulling this off. Important are the support slots you give & make sure you give them for the right reasons. People have a right to ask why your doing it. Expect some jealousy, though they wont admit it. Good Luck with this. It's fantastic

Can I just say that i wasnt making an attack on the proposition. It was the "never give up" bit that made me want to wretch. Not what Carlsberg is trying to do. Theres not enough optimism left in the world for that kind of comment to fly these days. And I hold my hands up and when it comes to confessing to a lack of optimism. And yes, KERB,I have been part of the industry. I've been chewed up and spat out by the f*cking industry, so dont tell me how it works. I didnt give up. I kept going and it got me f*ck all. So dont lecture me on the politics of the industry. Calrsberg, all the more power to you for supporting a "worthy" cause. I hope that some of the bands make it. I really do. But making it doesnt get the job done anymore. Reaching the top and staying there are 2 completely different things. But as far as being supportive goes, I'm all for it. We need a breakthrough version of the Mexican Pets or Kerbdog. U2 arent up to much anymore and Therapy? are non-existant. Ireland needs to musically put itself back on the map again. Sorry if I seem aggressive but I dont like being misunderstood or accused of the wrong thing.
