the other night on the fanning show, i heard fightstar (i think) doing a cover of mr brightside by the killers... i think it epitomised what an awful cover song is... ...an ex-boyband member in his new pretend to be "grown up" rock band trying to do an identical note for note cover of a very recent song which has been stretched to its full potential anyway yet succeeding purely in highlighting his own fragile vocal and his band's less than inspired playing... ticks almost every box of bad cover versions for me... ...and yeah, i'm tiring of the indie ironic even better than the real thing cover version as well

Annie Lennox taking Whiter Shade of Pale out of the sixties and into an elevator made me pretty sick. Ronan Keating and Dearbhla whatsit from BallyK crashing a train into 'Fairytale of New York' was a plain simple Linching offence.

James Blunt's version of Where Is My Mind at Electric Picnic. I was sitting in my tent at the time but I could still hear the evil f*cker molesting the song.

Yeah, its pretty grim (their new single "I'm in Love" is a damn sight better, but will depend heavily on your tolerance for the whole "wideboy" thing), but not as bad as people make out. I think the Audio Bullys fell foul of the big problem for anyone releasing a straightforward sample based record: timing. Had it not been for the fact that the Kill Bill movies landed this previously relatively obscure track slap bang into the pulic conciousness, they would have gotten away with it, In the same way that Fat Boy Slim got away with many of his simple cut and paste jobs and Moby got away with the entire "Play" album (at the time) which left much of its source material pretty much intact! To contrast, Audio Bullys' sampling Joe Cocker (I think) on "Face in a Cloud" is inspired and a great track to boot. Basically the problem with "Shot me down" is: Weak Track + Poor Timing = track bombs critically

It's Nouvelle Vague.. The album is quite good actually, bit of effort put into it...

I particulary like their version of Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough.
