Anyone hear the documentary on One, compiled by Brian Kenny, about a Ballymun rap group on RTE Radio One earlier tonight (19/10/05) ?

It sounds potentially cringeworthy, anyone remember the slightly embarrasing early days of UK Hip Hop before it found its own unique identity in grime/garage (Dizzee Rascal, Lady Sovereign, Roll Deep, The Streets etc)? Obviously I'd be interested to hear some of this Ballymuns crews stuff but I'm not holding my breath expecting to hear a work of urban genius or something. I used to hear some of the local hip hop on Cork pirate radio stations and while there was the occasional track that made you think "mmmm, thats not bad", while other tracks were like "aaarrgghh, stoppit, you're from Shandon, not Compton"

It's not those 'man and the machine' guys is it? They were good.

"Celtic Tiger, Strange Kinda Cat, Why Am I Skinny When Everybody's Fat" Heh! The only great Dublin rap... That said, I remember 'Man and the Machine' busking a lot about 2 years ago. They were pretty damn good.

In one, Mully. It was occasionally very funny, particularly the rapping.

I'm sorry but the early days of UK Hip Hop (Roots Manuva, The Nextmen, The Creators, Mark B, Blade, Braintax, Fleapit, Rodney P, Skinnyman, Skitz, TY, Jehst, Aspects, Blak Twang, DJ Format, Fallacy and Fusion, Funky DL, The P Brothers, Phi Life Cypher, The Headcase Ladz, The Herbaliser, Killa Kela, Aim, New Flesh For Old) piss all over the style mag endorsed likes of Lady Sovereign and Roll Deep. The Ballymun trio in question are most likely Urban Intelligence. I haven't heard them so I can't comment. Out of all the Irish MCs on the current scene my favourite is Doobious who used to be in the Cork crew Metabollix. The last I'd heard the Headcase Ladz were making beats for him (The Headcase Ladz are one of the best hip-hop crews in the UK, they're signed to Zebra Traffic, a subsidary of Tru Thoughts records. Tru Thoughts is home to Quantic, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Nostalgia 77, Natural Self, TM Juke, Flevans, Diesler etc. and has previously put out releases for Mr. Scruff, Jon Kennedy and Bonobo). Popular opinion would dictate that the best MC in the country is Ri-Ra who was formely a member of Scary Eire. Incidently their Dole-Q single is one of the best Irish records of the last fifteen years. Other Scary Eire members include DJ Mek who produced several tunes on the last Ian Brown album. Another Irish guy to watch is DJ Flip. He's the first Irishman to win a world scratching title and his last release on All City records featured the vocal talents of US Crew Foreign Legion. Apparently his next release will feature Slug from Atmosphere.

Ah Stroller, I'm not gonna get into a "I know more about hip hop (and it was all better back in the day)" competition with ya, cos I don't. Yeah sure I remember folks like Mark B and Blade and Roots Manuva (as does anyone who has Leftfields second album), but I do remember there being a period where of muppets trying to be all "gangsta" like like their US counterparts (which Mark B & Blade and later Lady Sov gleefully made fun of), and don't diss Lady Sovereign, she rocks, and I reckon she could kick your ass too... Respec' for your knowledge of Irish hip hop by the way (respec'? Whats in this tea? I'm turning into Tim Westwood!). Might make a nice feature article/editorial for Cluas if your up for it?

I heard that years ago at a party. I laughed for hours. Awful, as far as I can remember.
