Back to saturday - just want to reiterate what everyone seems to have been saying it was a f**king great day, an absolute pleasure to play, well done to the things for putting it all together and a big up to the Mighty who stole the show IMO, thanks to everyone who stayed till the end and danced like a lunatic there were quite a few of you......Pschofest2 - bring it on!

nah thats now what i mean at all.
What im trying to say is that if any artists are going to make it really big, and reach a widespread audience beyond any sort of an underground scene (which isnt big enought to support any band)then they will need attention from mainstream media. be it radio, newspapers, magazines whatever.
Thats what i mean, hotpress should have been there, so you have to ask why the f**k they werent and what can be done about it? Cos national coverage would be f**king great

yea it should be but it aint
Its so dissappointing
You would think that they'd be so into it
Besides - and its been said before...
Most people into music would hardly regard hotpress
as a music publication at all anymore...

Thats the thing Hotpress are Mainstream bigtime, while I think most bands that played on Saturday are not. As in, they are part of something that is different from what is reported between the sheets. There is something really big bubbling under the surface here at moment even though there are a core group of bands working towards a common goal (ie events like Saturday night) they are all different & edgy for it. Hotpress will never get it, they're not capable of understanding an underground scene, its beyond them. Unless of course a few of youse who played on Sat night make the bigtime, then they'll be licking your ar&^s & touting you as the next big Irish wonder.....

It's not quite as simple as that but if you're willing to front me the couple of hundred thousand on a "Ian you can piss it away and never have to give it back" basis it'll take to get such an operation off the ground properly I'll give it a go. Bear in mind I've got no print media experience and don't have the temprement to drop to my knees for advertisers like HP do when you do it though.

Have yet to see Mainline live, were they any good? They sound very watery BRMC to me, but maybe they're different on stage.

Re Mainline...I've always been a bit indifferent about them BUT i have to say I was really impressed with the gig on Saturday. Maybe it was the atmos, or the gargle but I really enjoyed their set & kinda got what all the fuss is about. Terrific stuff.

Hotpress can f**k off. They havent a clue anyway.
Do you know just how clueless they are?
I DJ every Wednesday at a Galway indie night called The Magic Number. The night's been running for three years in a night club called Cuba and since it's inception it has been included in the listings section of Hot press every Fortnight.
A couple of weeks ago Cuba posted off their October listings to Hot Press. Some bright spark who works for the magazine assumed that The Magic Number featuring DJ Stroller was actually The Magic Numbers (the band) with support from DJ Stroller. They made it their featured Galway gig of the fortnight and even threw in a picture of the hirsuite siblings. All this despite the fact that Cuba had been sending in the same Wednesday night listing for the last three years.
Can you imagine how many people rang up looking for tickets?

That's almost too good. I'm going to be telling that one for years. Though I'll claim it as my own of course.

I dropped Capsula a mail. Got this reply ...
Thank you so so much. We enjoyed PsychoFest and Dublin like crazy. We are enchanted by the very high top level and brilliant personality of all the bands we met, saw and listen to, each one was a world to get in and enjoy in full. Psychofest is Top. Thank you for your mail and we really do love to be in Dublin again very soon.

ok admittedly my knowledge of the process of magazine publishing is little to none and it was flippant of me to imply that a viable alternative would be an easy feat to attain but don't you find it utterly bemusing that so many years after its inauguration Hotpress continue to (almost) monopolize music magazine publication in ireland today.
the only people who are going to change this are the people who have bone fide passion and confidence in the (non-mainstream) music in question. As akablue mentioned in his/her post "there is something really big bubbling under the surface" at the moment - Now, more than ever is the time to use our voices, our most powerful weapon to recify this situation for the good of irish music.
I know it's a cliche but where there's a will there's a way. how do you think Punk Magazine got started in New York in the 70's ?
Here's an article - interesting albeit a tad dated but this only serves to demonstrate how nothing has changed.
