In a poll conducted by List Magazine, Belle & Sebastian ran away with being named the Best Scottish Band Ever. Is this deserved? They are a cracking band who rarely achieve the recognition they deserve. Here's the list anyway: 1 Belle & Sebastian 2 Travis 3 Idlewild 4 Wet Wet Wet 5 Sensational Alex Harvey Band 6 Simple Minds 7 Teenage Fanclub 8 Bay City Rollers 9 Primal Scream 10 The Proclaimers 11 Texas 12 Mull historical society 13 Big country 14 Snow Patrol 15 Franz Ferdinand 16 Bis 17 Deacon Blue 18 Fish 19 Jesus and Mary Chain 20 Mogwai 21 Runrig 22 Trash Can Sinatras 23 Del Amitri 24 Orange Juice 25 Nazareth 26 Beta Band 27 Biffy Clyro 28 Altered Images 29 Aztec Camera 30 Eddi Reader 31 Goodbye Mr Mackenzie 32 Fire Engines 33 Delgados 34 Arab strap 35 Vaselines 36 Associates 37 The Pastels 38 Eurythmics 39 Aereogramme 40 Blue Nile 41 Boards of Canada 42 Rezillos 43 Incredible string band 44 Cocteau twins 45 Dogs Die in Hot Cars 46 Spare Snare 47 Average White Band 48 Lulu 49 Skids 50 Shamen

beta band would definitely be my favourite from that list. To be honest i know very few of the others. The Incredible String Band get a lot of praise, got one of their albums and it did nothing for me, primal scream are good (ish), i like some of their stuff, depends on mood really, screamadelica is great if youre in the mood. Boards of Canada are good too, but i wouldnt say everyone would like them, more niche typa thing. Travis - f**k that!

Incredible, never realised so many great bands came out of Scotland. My fave bands on that list would be: The Rezillos - day-glo B-movie punk rock! Sputnik Kiss is an absolute classic! Jesus and Mary Chain - need no introduction Primal Scream - Their work is patchy overall but "Screamadelica" and "Vanishing Point" are incredible Orange Juice - even if its only for "Rip it up", surely someone has sampled that tune for its incredible groove already? Delgados - Probably the best of the Chemikal Underground bands The Vaselines are worth checking out if you're a Nirvana fan, although kind of happier sounding, but still with a pretty dark sense of humour. I've heard good things about the Pastels, are they as good as people make out? I reckon they would probably be my kind of band being a bit of Galaxie 500/Luna fan.

What about James Yorkston and his Athletes. 'Moving Up County' is a beautiful album.

Nice to see Big Country getting a bit of recognition. An under rated band IMHO. Travis at number two is a sick joke, or even, if you will, a Travis - ty. *ba - dum TISH*

yeah, Pilchard, Sons and Daughters record is really good. Was just talking to the drummer a minute ago, nice bloke. They're supporting British Sea Power over hear in June and playing over 10 festivals this summer. yowza. Anybody see them support Franz Ferdinand?

Yeah I saw them support Franz Ferdinand, while they were good they weren't overly great.

No I missed them. By the time I arrived for that gig they'd already finished and the Fiery Furnaces were on stage. Ragin! I know I've already posted this link on this board before but if anyone wants to check out the video for their new single Dance Me In (It's a class tune by the way) you can check it out here; http://www.sonsanddaughtersloveyou.com/media.php

No argumet with Belle & Seb. being up there, great band but Primal Scream should be number 1 inho, all the rest are very very lightweight in comparison

Mogwai are the best Scottish band ever. Also, absolutely shocking that Blue Nile are at 40. What the f**k's goin on there??

I think this poll was put together quite a while ago, prior to The latest Blue Nile offering. Given that the hadn't released anything for eight years prior, it's understandable they would be under the radar. For anyone who hasn't hasn't come across them, check out Hats or Across the Rooftops, thoroughly splendid stuff.

Belle and Sebastian are great undoubtedly. Eddi Reader is cool - love her Robert Burns album...it's so sensual or something. Capercaille (lead singer Karen Matheson) are also excellent. Never heard though of most of the bands on that list though.

Lists sorted by nationality are utterly redundant. It doesn't mean anything.

Oh dear, we'd better cancel the Cluas end of year polls then... I know what you mean, I tend not to care where music comes from as long as its good, I'm not thinking "oh I'd better support the Irish music industry" every time I buy a CD, I'm thinking whether I like the album or not. Lists like this are just a bit of fun and help to focus peoples minds on a particular national scene so tend to be good publicity for bands in that country.

The Belle and Sebastian folks apparently accepted their award by saying "we have very loyal fans". Seems it was a "A Nation Once Again is the best song ever" type deal.

My Top 3 would be, NO.1 The Beta Band (by quite a bit) followed by Primal scream, Belle and Sebastian and Mogwai. Not a bad line up for a small country like scotland
