It's like the difference between a perv rubbing his cock into your leg in a packed lift & the 'squeal like a pig' scene from 'Deliverance'.

The song is fairly unremarkable, I think what gave it the Oscar nudge was the way the song played into the scene in the film. As far as I can remember it was the bit in Waltons where she joins in on piano and the bond is formed. Its a nice enough scene and if you weren't really into music the song (and the scene) would be enough of a heart-string tugger to be memorable enough when the nominations come around.
