i'm pissed right now and clutching at straws but is there anywhere in dublin where i can feasibly go drinkin' late and hear some truly great new music?...i mean, i go to bleedin' whelan's every weekend and granted, the pixies, radiohead, smiths et al are fantastic but when you hear the same stuff week in, week out...and 90% of it is old old old...is there some late club i'm inadverently missing where i can hear, i dunno, yo la tengo, sparklehorse, my bloody valentine, magnetic fields, i rem. in the old days 'dazed' was amazing and 'helter shelter' more recently is the best you can get but please inform me if i'm ignorantly missing out here...

Amen to that, King of Nails. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough but a great many places that play alternative music seem to think it ended around 1993. That said, when it comes to using spinning discs (and not CDs), I have an attic full of indie vinyl up to about that time so maybe this is the reason. I was in Dakota a few weeks ago and there was a pretty good indie mix being played but generally older stuff. Suggestions would be very welcome.

I work close to Isaac Butts and whilst the music is decent enough (old school indie) the pub itself is pretty dingy. There are clubs downstairs at the weekend which is generally very old school (often based on the tunes played in Dublin's legendary northside indie teen disco, the Grove, which closed many years ago). So, expect lots of the Cure, REM, interspersed with some early baggie manchester, punk (SLF etc) and plenty of Whitesnake, Santana, Lynard Skynard etc etc. Any other former Grove goers out there?

All pretty much the same except with a bit of Ram Jam and Rainbow thrown into the mix. I did enjoy their add on PhantomFm saying "WARNING: This night will contain a slow set"

Ahhh the slow set...an institution in itself! I have a really strong memory dancing to 'Take My Breath Away' by Berlin and thinking 'O my God I'm so in love' with some spotty little dude that I'd met two minutes before hand. Ahh those were the days, it seemed so innocent. Jaysus...did you ever mooch someone with braces...very strange - not trying to offend any brace-wearing cluas posters. Ha ha aha ha!! I'm interested now...what was your slow set song...?? !!!

HA HA HA Dromed!! Berlin! Bloody hell, they did play some rot for the slowies. I do recall many a lazy waltz with nublie ladies of varying levels of repulsiveness to the equally nauseating "Sometimes when we touch" or "You've got a friend". Good grief, I even remember "A Spaceman came travelling" by Chris DeBurgh getting a run out. I also remember they used to let you bring down your own albums to play in the first hour and having plenty of arguments over the merits of "Hatful of Hollow" over "Master of Puppets" or anything by Slayer. Life was so simple back in the day - you were either a rocker, a Curehead or a Trendie. So Dromed, after Berlin were you asked out to "The Compound"? Perhaps they werent such innocent days afterall! ---------------------------- Currently Listening to... Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Afghan Whigs - 1969

Ahhh Vent My Speen I can't believe you like the Afghan Whigs...what a blast from the past! ....and the less said about my innocence (or lack of) in my slow dancing days the better!! I do remember the spotty little dude that enticed me to go every week finally succuming to my charms when I gave him a rendition of 'How Do I get you Alone' by those female rock chicks Heart - Ha ha ha ha ha ha - another slow dancing special, how could you not be swayed by that! Ha ha ha! He did have a huge pair of elephant flairs on and was mad into the Stone Roses, but had a wet gel look going on....it was a love that burnt outwhen he dropped the hand on my best mate - I had to shoot him down!

Heart? The only thing they every swayed in me was the contents of my stomach! I love that Whigs album. I'm a bit, ahem, "tired and emotional" today so I went for something a tad visceral and seedy to match my mood. ------------------ Currently listening to... Vent my Spleen you are starting to freak me out now.....Deus and The The were two bands I really liked years ago, particularly The The - II think my fav. song of theirs is Love is Stronger then Death - Matt Johnson is a legend AND he had Johnny Marr playing with im...C'mon! Right as Rain is a fantastic Deus song too...very soft and moody, there's a real atmosphere on that record, Hotel Lounge is good too. The dude with the tattoos (bass player?) was a bit nice too..Mmmmm and the Violin put a touch of mania into the sound too. Good stuff outta you Vent.

I have a real soft spot for Matt Johnson - I think the only records I owned were U2 and Now 2 until I happened to hear "Heartland" and for the first time felt that rush of your life being somehow incomplete without having a certain album. Funnily enough, I was listening to the very sleazy Afghan Whigs this morning and got to thinking about the song "Out of the Blue (and into the fire)" on Infected. Now that is a real slice of the human condition (well the male condition anyway) and hugely sleazy. Worst Case Scenario is a cracker. I am currently going through a bit of a dilemma. Right now, I have about 120 CDs on my desk in work, much of which I hardly ever listen to. So, I have two options, box it up and stash it in a dusty corner or do the sensible thing and lump it down to Freebird, sell it and get some new tunes. I am systematically giving each a listen but basically I'm finishing up just wondering why I don't get 'em out more! Perhaps I should just post a list here and let the Cluas crew be brutal for me. Of course, stashing it has merits too. I like the idea of finding it all in 40 years and listening to some Mercury Rev with my valium. Or perhaps telling the grand children to turn that racket off and put on a bit of The Hives.
