Advance word on 'Some Kind of Monster' the acclaimed rockumentary which depicts the music leviathan Metallica in therapy, is that it is a riot, 'Spinal Tap' as remade by Woody Allen. One of the comedic highlights of this film, which delighted audiences at the Sundance Film Festival, is a scene where James Hetfield goes to San Quentin Prison to lecture the notorious jail's hardened criminals on the subject of 'getting in touch with their rage'. The response from the inmates is a less than adulatory show of two fingered salutes. Are Metallica going soft in their middle age or did Johnny Cash just make it all look too easy ?

it's a pity, but ever since bob "satan" rock came into the metallica fold, i've lowered expectations. But they gave us the best metal album ever ("..Puppets", or maybe in light of the goin soft thing, "Master of Puppies", oh sweet lord, sorry, I'm goin daft) so to be honest they have full license to do what they want as far as I'm concerned. Although I do really wish they wouldnt. in fairness James is a recovering addict, he deserves a break, but we or the good people of San Quentin, shouldnt have to be a part of his recovery. As for the Johnny Cash thing, Cash was in jail(gaol) for a while as my limited knowledge of the mans personal life leads me to believe. I think steve earle is following in his footsteps, he too was "banged up" on various charges (asault, possesion of drugs and stuff, he was just bold really!) An awful shame that this has happened to them. I will just cocoon myself in 1987 when I first heard them play and had never heard them speak. Something more bands should do less of!

Actually, that's an urban myth. Cash never 'did time' in jail. Earle, on the other hand, has worn the orange jump suit of the state penitentiary. By the way, Earle also performed a televised prison concert, namely Steve Earle Live At Cold Creek Correctional Facility, TN (MTV).

Yeah the Cash myth stems from an overnight stay in a local cell after a drink driving incident. Steve Earle was indeed a genuine con, but I wonder of all the rock stars out there who has done the most time? Gil Scott Heron has to be up there somewhere.
