Any fans of Donal Dineens old Today FM show "here comes the night"? I used to listen to this show quite a lot, definitely a great show to drift off to or just nice to listen to when suffering from my regular insomnia. Then all of a sudden it disappeared, not unusual I thought, as Donal Dinneen would often take a week or two off. When I finally heard Donal Dineen again, it was a different show called "small hours" scheduled as the name suggests after midnight. Really annoying because the start time is too late even for me to bother tuning in. Does anyone know what the story is with this? This article seems to indicate its down Today FMs lousy commercial interests (check subtle dig at Tom Dunne): http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=64160&time_posted_upper_limit=1081137600&time_posted_lower_limit=1081054800 However I'm not sure thats the whole story, anyone know whats really going on. We've already lost No Disco, whats next?

Was a fan of 'Here Comes tHe Night' myself Binokular, disappointing that it's been axed to a later time. I heard Donal Dineen talking one night months ago on the show saying that he wasn't sure what the future of the programme would be as the station's listenership had fallen a lot and he was basically asking listeners to try and spread the word and get their mates to listen in so as to keep it going...I guess that may have been the start of it. Pity.

Yeah, I remember in the usual half awake state in which I listen to the show Donal talking about spreading the word about the show, didn't think anything of it at the time. I gotta sort out some kind of timer on my stereo and tape the show or something, it would be way better to listen to in the morning than the usual breakfast show rubbish. Only problem is I might make it in to work! On a side point, how do they figure out that ratings are going down in such a relatively short period of time? As far as I know the JNLR survey isn't done weekly or even monthly.

The story appears to be that Today FM has developed an inhouse approach with regard to its programmes which is much the same as the one employed by MTV in regard to its presenters. Move them first, axe them later when their popularity starts to wane. It has already happened to John Kelly's cornucopia of obscure scratchy records and also to the dog that was 'Dad Rock'. Sadly, its the flip side of Popular in Popular Music. I never much liked 'Lemonjelly' anyway.
