Gig of the fortnight is... Ponytail

Uzi And AriWhere and When?
Whelan's, Dublin - 11/03

Why?

It's not just the city in which The Wire was set Baltimore MD. has in recent years proved to be a hotbed of musical innovation with Animal Collective, Beach House and Dan Deacon all hailing from B-more.  Add to the list Ponytail.  Their previous Irish date last September saw the deerhood influenced 4-piece utterly caught up in the simple joy of making music with your buddies.  Truly inspiring stuff.

Support on the night is from Jogging and Adebesi Shank.

Best of the rest

Amusement Parks On FireWho? One for the road
Where and When?
ALT, Dublin – 14/03

Since the announcement a few weeks back that Road Records was set to close there has been reams written in tribute to the little record store on Fade Street.  About the contribution that they've made to Irish music, about just how generally awesome Dave and Julie who run the place are.  There may be some light at the end of the tunnell though and there are efforts being made to keep road open.

That happening though does hinge somewhat on the success of this fundraising/tribute gig and an impressive bill has certainly been assembled.  Topping the bill is newly crowned Choice Award Winner Jape (playing what will be their/his only Irish gig for a while) and on top of that there'll also be sets from The Jimmy Cake, Si Schroeder, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Adrian Crowley and The Large Corporation (Dudley Corporation Vs Large Mound).

Amusement Parks On FireWho? Mogwai
Where and When?
Acadamy, Dublin – 20, 21, 22/03

Quite a coup for MCD, Mogwai's 3 night stand in the Acadamy is part of only 5 European dates the Glaswegian noise terrorists currently have pencilled in for 2009 (and these are their only non-festival ones).  These will be Mogwai's first gigs in the Republic since Electric Picnic a couple of years ago.
