Amazing album, has a very unsettling and haunting quality to it. In an interview in The Sunday Times she seemed in a good spirits but the music and lyrical subject matter suggests a tortured soul. Complete departure from her earlier stuff and unlike anything else out there at the moment. Her 'Kid A'? Why can't more established artists be as creatively brave as this?

It's a brilliant record, even if she is singing in a completely different voice and everything is piano-driven. PJ rocks, no doubt, even when she's being spooky like this.
Quint, if you like 'White Chalk', check out 'Fur and Gold' by Bat For Lashes (if you haven't already)

Yep, got 'Fur and Gold', great album and saw some of her set at EP but apparently the Klaxons album is a lot better because they won the Mercury Prize and she didn't!

I read an interview in one of the freebies where she says she sings in her 'church voice' on this record - apparently she used to sing like this once a year when going to church with her gran. Must check it out.

i'm not sure you can call this album extraordinary... also, i don't see her offering up anything new... most of the songs are very simple songs with fairly simple accompaniment... the haunting quality has been done by plenty of other acts, frequently with more devastating impact...
that is not to say that it isn't a very good record... she is a class act that is bringing another very listenable top quality album to the table...i am really enjoying it for what it is and can't wait for next week's show...
