Sound Waves is back for another year and we begin with our first surf music recommendation of 2008, Seasick Steve, an overnight success after a lifetime of music.
I ushered in the New Year stitting quietly on my couch alone watching the Jools Holland Hootennany on BBC. In a show full of highlights such as Eddie Floyd, Daffy and Kylie Minogue (expertly writhing on a grand piano), one musician shone out, Seasick Steve (aka Steve Wold) a veteran American bluesman whose raw uncompromising brand of blues brought the house down. Winner of the 2007 MOJO Breakthrough award, he is my first choice for 2008.

Bit overrated I think. The whole backwoods stomp-blues schtick wears thin after about three songs.
He's obviously enjoying himself though. There must be a million guys doing the same thing who can't even get arrested.

Everglades? You must be from England or some such place. His new album is total crap - either it's overproduced retreads, replete with black female backup singers (white neo-bluesman type usually resort to this when they've hit the wall creatively - something that happened to this guy about 10 years ago) or they're just retreads. Hope he's socking away some money...
