Cluas Gigs of the Fortnight

The best gigs across Ireland during the period 13 to 26 February 2006

Gig of the fortnight is........  Goldfrapp

Where and When?
Ulster Hall, Belfast - 26th February

Why? I'll be honest, pop music isn't my thing; I'm more of a chin-stroker than a foot-tapper or a hip-swinger, so if pop is going to capture my imagination then it's going to be pretty exceptional.

Goldfrapp's last album Supernature was one of the best released in 2005 and the group made a very impressive appearance at September's Electric Picnic. Not sure that's the right way to play a theremin though.

Best of the Rest
Violent Femmes
Who?
Violent Femmes

Where and When?
Savoy, Cork - 21st February
Trinity Rooms, Limerick -23rd February
Roisin Dubh, Galway - 24th February
Vicar Street, Dublin - 25th February

Why? Formed back in 1982 The Violent Femmes will most likely forever be remembered for "Blister In The Sun" but a closer inspection of their catalogue shows that they were one of the finest exponents of punkish teen-angst ever, they're at least as good as McFly anyway.

Who?
The Strokes

Where and When?
The Point, Dublin - 20th February
Ulster Hall, Belfast - 21st February

It's a testament to their influence that The Strokes, who sounded so fresh and exciting just a few years ago now sound like just another band doing the late 70's thing. Nonetheless ?Is This It? remains a fine album and it's been a long time since they've visited Dublin.

Who?
Delays

Where and When?
Spring And Airbrake, Belfast - 15th February
Nerve Centre, Derry - 16th February
The Village, Dublin - 18th February

Southampton's finest exponents of high-pitched vocals and fancy haircuts visit these shores in support of their new album "Valentine".

Who?
Gemma Hayes

Where and When?
Vicar Street, Dublin - 15th February
Spring And Airbrake, Belfast - 17th February
Spirit Store, Dundalk - 18th February
Cyprus Avenue, Cork - 19th February

?The Roads Don't Love You? hasn't really been making the same sort of stir as her debut effort yet her recent strong showing in CLUAS and Meteor polls show that Gemma Hayes still has an audience hungry to listen to her music..

Dirty Pretty Things
Who?
Dirty Pretty Things

Where and When?
Cyprus Avenue, Cork - 14th February

With all the attention that Pete Doherty has been getting in the past two years it'd be easy to forget that The Libertines had two creative forces driving them.

Carl Barat has certainly taken his time putting his post-Libs band together and Dirty Pretty Things will make their Irish debut at the Bud Rising South festival in Cork.

Also this fortnight:
Kanye West
The Point, Dublin - 24th & 25th January
Jason Mraz
Whelan's, Dublin - 14th February
Spring And Airbrake, Belfast - 12th February
Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Olympia, Dublin - 19th February
Dolans, Limerick - 22nd February
Jack Johnson
The Point, Dublin - 22nd January
King Creosote
Crawdaddy, Dublin - 17th February
