hotpress used to be a good music magazine. now though it is a complete rag. its full of general dicussions re politics, written by half wits with a less than full understanding of the relevant topic. as for the sex column. is there any more obvious attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator!? for a reputable music magazine to have a sex column is a pathetic attempt to rekindle interest in a magazine that is obviously losing its readership. could you imagine Q or other decent mags doing the same? it is an embarresment! next they'll probably start puttin in pictures of topless women! is hotpress even a music magazine any more. in time perhaps it'll be the free saturday supplement with metro am

Q is just as bad the only good thing about hotpress is that it gets a general release meaning its in all the shops and that it supports new irish acts. but other than that its crap. i only buy it because it is the only music mag u can get in carlow other than nme

Stopped buying Hot Press years ago. A bit perplexing to see reviews of venues in it giving somewhere that you know is a kip the thumbs up just because there's a half-page advertisement for said venue a few pages further on! And they always seemed (when i was reading it anyway) to praise any Irish band by just because they were an Irish band.

hot press is turgid, vacuous stuff. it's horrible to see a great magazine disappear put itself. pure, unadulterated embaressment.

The only real music centred magazines in Ireland are Hotpress, Foggy Notions and Connected. There are alot of music supplements/sections in other publications. At the moment though, Foggy Notions is by far the best around.

Top 5 discussions for those new to cluas: 1. Is Hot Press crap? 2. Is Damien Rice crap? 3. Are the Frames crap? 4. A very complicated discussion about the difference between supporting and promoting the artist on discussion forums 5. Decent blogs with mp3s on them.

I had a brief flick through it yes'day checking the album reviews. It gave Enya's new piece of celtic mystical crap 9 out a 10. I rest my case.

Hot Press. A Rag? Is Michael Jackson a bit odd? Is Jose Mourinho a tad self-confident? Does the Pope s**t in the woods??? Hot Press is absolute travesty! A few months ago I saw they gave a glowing review to one of those free Playlist HMV cds, the reviewer was delirious in his praise of this compilation album. Must be the first time I've seen a free giveaway CD get an in-depth. Utterly bizarre. I could go on and on about Hot press but must get back to work....

Foggy was relaunched just recently. Still up to the usual standards. with a nice free "secretly Canadian" cd on the cover. Is being sold in tower and a few other venues, and apparently is on sale at some gigs as well

the problem with Foggy is its too, er, nice. Theres no bite to it at all, no sense that the writers actually have much of an opinion bar toeing a party line that "indie is good, major is bad". theres also some really badly written bits in the new issue (some of the reviews are cringey). At best, Foggy is a well designed fanzine rather than a magazine that has a real agenda about what its doing. Cluas (IMHO) is way, way better. Oh - nearly forgot - was glancing thru a mag called Under The Radar the other day in easons. very good stuff altogether. anyone else seen it?

I agree with your op. on Foggy Notions Pilchard. While it's beautifully presented and looks great it's only okay content wise. The articles seem to be straightforward bio-pic pieces with, as you say, no bite or critical bent. It's only a new mag on the block i suppose so it might evolve with time into something with a bit more teeth.
