Julian Gough is/was the lead singer with Toasted Heretic (well meaning sod living in the land of cringe).

Oh God yes! I had to edit a Toasted Heretic thing for Last Broadcast a few months back. What a pillock. Reminds me of several people I went to school with. Entirely slappable.

Any of you have had the misfortune to see Dustin & Chris DeBurgh doin Patrica The Stripper? DeBurgh must be one the most cringeworthy musicians anywhere, let alone our fair isle.

depends on your definion of embarrasing......
i find Dave Fanning to be colossally embarrasing, especially when u remember how brilliant he once was. now, he sounds as if he is just phoning it in.
others who make me wish they'd go off and boil their heads include:
Steve Wall
Ollie Cole
The Revs (collectively and individually)
Whoever books the music for RTE shows like The Late Late and Tubridy Tonight

Picturehouse.
And that sweaty fat farmer with the comb over who sang (hilariously) Aon Fhocail...with a gang of kids. Very disturbing not to say embarrassing. I mean what the f*&k was that about? He's the poster child for why first cousins should never pro create.

Has Geldof been mentioned yet? I'm not sure how I'd react if I heard his spirit crushing, low pitched drone up close.

Ah I love Geldof, I know he comes across as being a bit Po faced and so very pc but I'm pretty moved by what he has to say most of the time and I find his dry-humour hilarious. I find Bono on the other hand a bit cringe inducing. I know it's ridiculous to cite Geldof as an inspiration and Bono as an embarassment but I find I genuinely believe in what Geldof is trying to do and can't help thinking Bono's political activities are a bit too sanctimonious and self-publicising - don't know why - just get two distinctly different feelings from them both. Is it just PR???

Nah, I still like Dave Fanning, though I can see where you're coming from. His shows are still enjoyable (but who am I to talk I never listen to the radio anyway).
Not so sure about Steve Wall, but aargh Ollie Cole.

Right well - I always hear people, especially Irish Artists being dogged on the site, but what about the people that you're proud of?
To keep on topic, yeah, the most embarrassing thing i think has definitley got to be the boybands thing. Fair play to anyone else who at least gets up and attempts something for themselves.

Sinead O Conor is not embarassing.
In contrast, Bono is the most cringe inducing person in music EVER. Apart from maybe B*witched.

Una - O'Connor is about as authentic as a 2 euro note, so much so that I have spent thousands on chiropodists bills to uncurl my toes each time her false head makes its way into view. If she's not embarrassing where is the evidence, oh yeah the video where someone sprinkles pepper in her eye......arghhhhhh

I just find O'Connors music entirely inconcsequential and as one HP writer put it years ago "a largely irrelevant sideshow to the persona". She hasn't made a record worth remarking upon since doing a pissy-eyes cover of a Prince song accompanied by a dodgy 80's synth and the worst recorded string section I can think of.
While I admire her willingness to how shall I put this ...ahem ...try new things -this reggae tip she's on at the moment is possibly the most noxious pillar to post swing she's taken yet.
Galling is what it was to see her on the late late recently (I suspect quite stoned) being asked her opinion on "the northern question" (think those loveable rogues in the RA had just decommissioned) and Sinead O'Connor -the woman with an opinion and an orb to chuck about on any topic you like -pipes up (slurs up actually) "well ...I dunno if you should be asking me ...I'm JUST a singer". I so wanted to smack her one.

For inclusion in the embarassing section of the thread - Gavin Friday - he's just so odious.
Paul Brady - there's something about him that loads of very talented people seem to like (allison krauss for one) but I just think he's pretty useless.
Richie Kavanagh is the overall wearing musical genius from Carlow of Aon focail eile fame. To my eternal shame I've got an autographed tape of his Potholes album which I got at the Tullamore Agricultural Show or the National Ploughing Championships which he regularly preformed at. (potholes is the pre-aon focail eile fame tape - talk about having my ear to the ground for fresh Irish talent before they hit mainstream).
All I can say is that I was young cluchie back then.
Daniel O'Donnell. Despite liking a number of his songs (so much so a few feature on my ipod's "top rated" playlist) he's uber-cringy.
The same goes for Foster and Allen - cringy with a few good moments.
You can take the girl out of the bog and bring her to a Sufjan Stevens concert, but you just can't take the bog out of the girl......

Wee Daniel is one of the great undererrated talents of Irish music (I myself have a rare cover version he did of Slayers' 'Darkness of Christ')
But seriously, I find Damien 'oh yes' Dempsey makes me wince and have done ever since I put the following question to a female fan of his, 'So tell me, if Damien Dempsey came up to you and said, "let me be your fantasy", would it turn you on ?' She started to laugh, I rest me case.

No way....Aidan Walsh may be a bit off the wall but he's not embarrassing. There are hundreds more people who deserve that title before Aidan Walsh. He'd different, independent & is a refreshing change to all those saps who take themselves & their "craft" too seriously. There is something particularly specific to Ireland that produces eccentrics like this & I think thats something to be celebrated. Open you ears...the whole "Community Games" tip is one of the funniest things you will ever hear. Especially if you were a child growing up in suburban Dublin in the 1980's, brilliant stuff altogether. Ok he may not look the part but so what, vive la difference!
Leave Aidan alone, he's not even close to the worst of them & writes really funny stuff too...Lets all go to the Community Games...

Kids today eh? I'll take that as a compliment! But yeah I suppose there is something odly compelling about him, His documentary was very good, but he's mad as a brush! I've dealt with him in the past, only short of a set of spurs and a six shooter. Has anyone seen his Private detective film yet?
Some people have added people like Steve wall and Glen hansard (though I dislike him, I don't consider him embarrassing)? this is all about opinion is it not?
Richie Kavanagh.... I agree there though! though he does cracks me up!
but whats funnier is seeing people enjoy and dance to his music!

I'm suprised no one's mentioned Dance To Tipperary, those (probably same) people who make "Celtic (hard C) Chill Out" albums and anyone else who likes to mix the naturally aligned phenomena of lowest common denominator knack-dance, hacked up Irish trad, republican party songs and supporting Celtic (soft C as in Glasgow Celtic) and gaagaa

You're right it is all about opinion BUT to state that someone shouldn't be allowed leave the country in case people associate him with Irish music is harsh IMHO. He's mad & a one off but what's the harm ? He's not spouting on about sheeiite or partronising or over earnest in his songwriting (like so many Oirish muso's)...I think you & Damien should give him a break....go on you know it makes sense!
By the way Glen Hansard mortifies me !

Seriously now, there's no need to start crying.
Having dealt personally with the man on many occasions I can tell you that he has been nothing but nice, and is honest enough, but he is a fool. The reason he is an 'outsider', as yuou put it is because he hasn't that much in the way of intelligence.
