The Movie Was Great, But The Soundtrack Kicked Ass

I know that everytime someone mentions soundtracks on this board the usual roster of names crop up. It's so common for the big movies with one or two decent tunes on the soundtrack to get over-praised, but sometimes the soundtrack is compiled to such a satisifying degree that it overshadows the movie. What are such soundtracks and movies? *This was brought on by how Scorsese uses The Rolling Stones, Dropkick Murphys, John Lennon, Nas and The Allman Brothers Band in 'The Departed'. However, the mention of this is contradictory of this thread becasue I thought the movie was excellent - just the use of soundtrack was perfect in it and got me thinking.

We were talking about the use of Mogwai in the new Zidane film, in a different thread. The choice of music in a film like this, without dialogue is extremely important, and was spot on. Off the top of my head, Vanilla Sky has a fantasic soundtrack. Jeffo B, Radiohead, Sigur Ros etc. Oh and The Big Lewbowski obviously aswell. Younger Cop: And was there anything of value in the car? The Dude: Oh, uh, yeah, uh... a tape deck, some Creedence tapes Maybe a question for another thread but the soundtrack in Dancer in the Dark, the Bjork film with Lars von Trier was fantasic but fck, what a film. I thought it was fantastic. Anyone agree?

Dead presidents, movie was pretty good but sound track was great. I loved the sound track in royal tennembaums aswell

wonder boys is one, also calexico did score/soundtrack for a film with heather graham and luke wilson called committed, only reason i kept watching it, good will hunting soundtrack was better than the film as well

I think 'Wonder Boys' is a really under-rated movie actually. It's soundtrack is great, especially the use of Dylan's 'Things Have Changed'. Cameron Crowe/Nancy Wilson did that one for 'Vanilla Sky' - they always get it right with their soundtracks.

Dead Man's Shoes: DM & Jemini, M. Ward, Aphex Twin, Calexico, The Earlies, Cul De Sac, Richard Hawley, Lucky Dragons. Broken Flowers: The Greenhornes (2 members of which are the less famous half of The Raconteurs), Marvin Gaye, Holly Go Lightly. Anything by Scorsese who's a massive music fan.

Defo agree with you on 'Dead Man's Shoes'. I was at the premiere for that in London and there was a Q&A afterwards with director Shane Meadows, with the question posed to him about the soundtrack. He basically said that he was a big Calexico fan and wanted to include Richard Hawley at some stage too.

tenenbaum's soundtrack was the bomb el duderino, great movie too and kavo, the 'dancer in the dark' soundtrack is absolutely bewitching, beautiful, some of bjork's best work - can't believe i've never seen the movie

The life aquatic ..outstanding ! The Royals Ts also was great ,had neverheard needle in the hay till then . Taxi driver was also great cool hand luke has one of the best soundtracks ever imo.

Dancer in the Dark is an incredible film, as were all of Von Trier's 'round that time, soundtrack wonderful too. Natural Born Killers is the S/T that jumps to mine mind immediately....also Doctor Zhivago, Profondo Rosso, Nenette et Boni, Trouble Everyday, Paris Texas, all the Sergio Leone 'spaghetti westerns'.....

Heat. everything from Passengers to Moby. Also 'I Went Down' had a great soundtrack. Buddy Guy & The High Llamas all one one cd. ...... did this come out on dvd ? I see references to it online but can't find it anywhere. Thx.

"Chaiyya Chaiyya" on Inside Man. Only saw it last night and I had to check Amazon today to check out the theme tune. I thought both the movie and that soundtrack kicked ass.

Forest Gump is the only one I can think of where the soundtrack is actually far superior to the film.

It has all the videos as extra features. excellent, thanks kavo. i'll pick this up sharpish also love the soundtrack from 'my summer of love', i think it was compiled by will gregory from goldfrapp and it shows, beautiful classical pieces as well as some edith piaf and tracks from gregory himself and goldfrapp - the film itself is another favourite of mine, a feast for the senses from start to finish, the two girls (tasmin and mona) are scarily convincing in the lead roles and the lancashire countryside looks impossibly beautiful

I just saw the film 'Thumbsucker' - not a bad film but the soundtrack only had Elliot Smith and Polyphonic Spree songs - which was quite good.

Can't believe no ones mentions Quadrophenia. Great film but unbelievable soundtrack..... Labyrinth is an amazing soundtrack but so is the film... The Life Aquatic

Just thought of other soundtracks that were amazing: Requiem for a dream - It's worth it for that 1 song at the end Any Tarantino Films - he does have a good grasp Garden State - Pretty much for the shins

Does anyone know who composed the soundtrack to Zodiac? I had mixed feelings about the film-picturesque though it was-but, especially in the first few minutes, the elegant soft-rock score was thrillingly wrong juxtaposed against the brutal images.
