Switched on Tom Dunne last night and again every album that arrives on his desk seems to be 'absolutely fantastic', 'class' and so on. New Pearl Jam is 'class', 'Eyes Open' is 'brilliant', 'Stadium Arcadium' is their best yet, blah blah blah. When the last u2 album came out he proclaimed it to be the best album he has ever heard since he started broadcasting!!!!!!!!!???????!!!!! '.....Atomic Bomb' apart, from 4 tracks, is awful.I like Tom Dunne but the way he showers praise on every new and established album/track/artist is absurd. Is there anything he doesn't like?

Tom does alot for the airing of new and upcoming artists both here and abroad. but its a job for him he just cant play he's own favourites all the time. god forbid if he did, we'd never get Couse of the radio. he bores me. never did see the attraction with a-house

Well in fairness it'd be more like Couse, Rilo Kiley, Couse, Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis solo, live Couse session, Rilo Kiley, Couse, Jenny Lewis and so on an so bloody on.

True, despite Rilo being one of my new favourite bands (though he didnt turn me on to them). But there is a limit when it comes to listening to anything on repeat. I listened to the end of the show and I heard him play a Lewis' B-side. I think the last time I tuned in was last month and guess what he was playing????

I like Tom Dunne, he plays good music ....... it's the job of a DJ he can't go slating Snow Patrol et al when he needs to get them in for sessions and interviews. I admit last night he seemed overly eager and happy about everything but then he was just back from holiday!

And he should just pork yer wan Ann and get it over with. Tom: "I think you can always judge a band by the quality of their b-sides" Ann: "Doo doo doo." Me: "Shut up. Put Leagues back on."

well, his music choice is a bit safe... give me leagues or dineen any day... however, it is of course a lot better than most of the crap we hear on the radio and he's done quite a lot to attract listeners through his dj'ing style... agree he seems to love everything but he's kinda above dissing in my book

you can't have dj's on the radio just playing all sorts of avant garde crap. it's not about whats exciting. we the listeners dont want to hear 45 mongolian yazoo players giving us a recital of the dark side of the moon. christ it might be euphoric but we want music we can apply our lives to. i dont want to be a nomad for f**k sake

Leagues is a breath of fresh air when he does the show, he played some great stuff last week, stuff you'd never hear from Tom. Leagues is the John Giles/Liam Brady of radio broadcasting whereas Tom is the Andy Townsend/Ally McCoist. I've no doubt he doesn't want to offend and so doesn't criticise. I don't trust his pronouncements any more. And don't get me started on that humming bint....!

no, no, no - leagues is TERRIBLE on the radio (and he was terrible on the TV too) largely because he's too in thrall to a certain kind of indie-ness. you get the same thing with foggy notions, to be honest. as for comparing him to Liam Brady or Johnny Giles - piffle! more like the packie bonnar or john toshack of music broadcasting

I think Leagues does a great job when he does sit in for Tom but in some ways it's easy for him, he's probably planning what he'll play for ages, he mightn't be as good if he was on every night.

Agreed. Perhaps if Leagues was on every night we'd discover other flaws that aren't quite as apparent on his occasional forays. To say he's 'TERRIBLE' though leaves me bewildered! But I really think Tom is too busy trying to be the musicians friend to give a real critical ear to new music. I enjoy Tom's show for the most part, I just wish he'd have some balls when talking about new music and put a gag on humming Anne.

an interesting view, pilchard... about leagues... i kinda know what you mean but reckon you're grossly overstating it... he does play a decent variety and other dj's would suffer from the same preferring one style over others - can't listen to jenny huston's show for example... john kelly is the man with the variety during the evening time, isn't he?

Tom Dunne is becoming more like Ray D'Arcy every day. That humming wagon has driven me away from the show. And when I do listen to it, it bores the s**te out of me. It's all part of an accelerated move towards lowest-common-denominatorism on the part of Today FM. It's only a matter of time before Dineen will be looking for a new home. Sad but true. Speaking of which, where was he last night? I turned on the radio just after twelve and got nothing but James Blunt.

I really like Rilo as well but they're definitely best when they stick to their own stuff - heard a few songs from the big Elliott Smith tribute night back in '03 and Jenny fairly murdered a few of the great man's tracks Haven't heard that Grateful Dead cover she does but I don't think I'll be tracking it down Hope she gets back to playing with Rilo soon as am not that into her Watson Twins stuff

the problem with Kelly is that while he plays BRILLIANT music, he talks such utter tosh between tracks. ever since he turned 40, hes been going on and on about age and getting old and his home-life etc etc and its just BORING. more music, less yak The problem is leagues is that the presentation is too cool for school and as comet and goat boy said, we'd soon tire of it every night of the week. thats the real test of a nightly music show - can the presenter keep enthused and varied for a long run? in this regard, donal dineen is ace - he's been doing a nightly radio show for nearly 10 years now and you can never secondguess him. with leagues, you always know roughly what the next 6 records will sound like.

Hmmm, don't think that's exactly what I said . No matter. Right now I'd gladly take Leagues instead of Tom for a few weeks to see how it turns out. Bloody hell, I was even glad when George Byrne used to take the odd turn! The thing is, I LOVE hearing new music. Like most of us, I work the 9-5 M-F so don't have a huge amount of time to search for new stuff. I'm always behind my mates in turning on to something new, they're usually the ones giving me tips. When I listen to Leagues he's usually playing stuff I'm just hearing or something new I haven't heard yet. I can't remember the last time Tom played something new and exciting I hadn't heard before. I use sites like this, Pitchfork, Stylus etc to hear new music, so why can't Tom. It's his job for Chrissakes, he has all day to do it!!! But I suppose it's all down to taste. If repetitively playing Jenny Lewis and Josh Routter gets the numbers listening then that's the way it's gonna be .

I must say it is refreshing when Leagues makes an appearance. I get sick of Tom Dunne after a while. Anyone who plays Ride songs can't go wrong. I still wish they had'nt moved Dineen to the Graveyard shift.

Still a good few months after most people here and on thumped picked up on them though, I even sent him an e-mail when Michigan came out basically saying "this guy is amazing, you've got to play him" and in fairness to him he did respond with a "I'll take a look" responce. I like Tom Dunne but I don't tune in much anymore (mostly I listen to Off The Ball on Newstalk when he's on) as he does tend towards a "safe" kind of indie and rarely veers away from it until the act in question has achieved some degree of success, he's a better "broadcaster" than Leagues is though even though I tend to prefer Leagues' selections. The thing is that Tom Dunne probably gets a pretty big audience and has to walk the tightrope between appeasing the legions of hardcore frames fans and people who post on message boards and he's never going to make everyone happy.

I have no real problem with Tom Dunne or even Ray Darcy for that matter, I just reckon Today FM would be brilliant if it was timeshifted forward about 2 hours (i.e. everyone is on 2 hours earlier). Ray Darcys show is brainless fluff, but theres nothing wrong with that, it'd make great breakfast radio. It'd be nice to listen to Tom Dunne on the way home from work rather than arguing politicians etc. and best of all - Donal Dineens show starting before midnight when I'm still awake.

I really like Ray Darcy's show. Perhaps it's because my expectations of daytime radio are so low but I find his lack of mid-atlantic accent and attendant bulls**t endearing.

To be fair, if Pet Sounds was hosted by Leagues every week, it'd be shifted to the graveyard shift pretty sharpish. The more niche the content, the fewer the listeners, the less the ad revenue. To paraphrase someone with a bigger brain than me, radio and television are truly democratic mediums, they churn out what people want to see/hear - the worrying thing is the rubbish the majority of people want to hear. Me? I'd much rather hear Tom Dunne's brand of safe-ish left field music at 7PM when the alternative is post-midnight respite from chart music. When are Phanton going to be up and running?

i agree fully with vent my spleen.... sad but true... after all, there was outrage when dineen was shifted from 10.00 to midnight but in truth today fm had actually shown him more loyalty than they needed to... his listening figures had been dire for some time before the shift... so, you need a niche radio station to play niche music... that's where phantom will (hopefully) come in to play

Well, depending on what you mean by niche. It was always a bit more rock-oriented than wedded to the alternative. Not that I don't expect Donal Dineen-esque shows (or even more fun things than that) but I don't think it's going to be the saviour of all things alternative, nor is it fair to expect it to be. But I don't think that's what you meant anyway?

very good point dera. since phantom went off the air, theres been this whole revisionism thing about it. when phantom was on air, it played tons and tons of irish stuff alright - but it was very "rock" rather than "alternative" (more pearl jam than arcade fire, if you know what i mean). while i'll welcome it back with open arms, i'll be very keen to hear what direction it goes in. after all, every single station on the dial can now claim to be "alternative" in some way or other so how will phantom be different to everyone else? and will they go on some mad signing spree and sign, say for instance, tom dunne to do their breakfast show?

When yer fav evening indie-type DJ starts doing the breakfast show, it's always the beginning of the end. I remember thinking so of Fanning yonks back and tis the same with Tom Dunne now. Wonder when Leagues will get his shot at the early morning slot !

well pilchard, dera... i agree, phantom was very rock-biased... i generally couldn't listen to it for too long at one go... there should be some individual programmes that present some genuine alternatives though, i'm hoping - they do have 24 hours a day to fill after all... what's more worrying is the potential giving into commercial pressures that are bound to take grip slowly dera, for niche radio, i guess you have to shove up your own mast and go from there as for tom dunne, if he ever gets replaced, it will not be for someone like leagues (more's the pity)... it will be for some tony fenton-a-like.... so, rock on tom, i say

Speaking of Fanning, that programme he does now on 2FM really is a waste of time, he's seriously fallen down the pecking order Receiving texts from listeners about 'songs with jobs or work in their title' Jaysus Dave...you're better than that! God be with the days when he was slagging off Boyzone live on air and giving Bianca Lucyx the eye on 2TV (where is she now incidentally??)

Listened briefly to Tom Dunne last night. He was playing the overrated Jenny Lewis. Then he played The Raconteurs, a rather unremarkable outfit despite the famous personnel, which he described as 'absolutely fantastic'.Arrrrrgggghhhh!Though saying that he did play Peter Bjorn and John's 'Young Folk' which is rather splendid. AS for other DJs Dave Fanning's 'legendary' status is cracking I think with that ridiculous show he has at tea time...but I think that's the fact that powers the be at 2 FM don't have a f**king clue. 2 words: Marty Whelan. It just beggars belief. Leagues is good but a little too cool for school and I agree with an ealier comment that if he was on full time his resolutely indie ethos would become tiresome after a few weeks.... Cormac Battle: go back to Wilt/Kerbdog. Pleeaaaase! Anyway the thought of listening to some bloke in a studio playing music is a dying concept as the internet slowly and irreversibly takes over...

Never a truer word. Previously we were in thrall to any old mediocre indie DJ to hear the latest sounds, but now poor ole Tom can't keep up with the pace of change, and he's as cutting edge as a national station's gonna get. I'm sure he's bewildered by the volume of requests for music he's never heard before. Considering it took him til 'Chicago' to start playing Sufjan, it doesn't bode well for his future survival. Sure, that's evolution for ye...

i think tom dunne must be a cluas reader listened to his show last night. he had stuart clarke and jim carroll on to review the month's albums - apparently he does it every month - and they ripped into everything. carroll lacerated pearl jam (compared them and their fans to marillion) and snow patrol ("mum rock"), while clarke was scathing about glen hansard's opus and bruce springsteen. even that girl who does the humming got in on the act throwing digs. it was very entertaining altogether - especially as poor tom was doing his best to defend the acts.

I was kind of thinking the same, i think the idea of getting in other people who can cut into bands is a good idea and to be fair Tom wasn't as gushing about Snow Patrol as he had been earlier in the week. I don't think the internet can replace a good DJ, i have tonnes of music i can listen to at home or on the internet but i still like listening to Pet Sounds. As for mentioning Ray D'Arcy in the same thread, what an insult, I can't listen to D'Arcy for more than 5 minutes he's a housewives idiot, thank god i'm at work when he's on.

clarke gave the usual yadda-yadda-frames-are-s**t-because-i-am-cool-and-they-are-not performance, but carroll liked it. he also said it boded well for the new frames album cos it meant all the low-key, downbeat ballads were out of the way and there were no excuses for the band not to deliver a really good album unless they were either s**t or listened to their fans.

Yeah, Carroll almost has me tempted to buy it, saying it compared well with 'For The Birds'. That stuff about the Frames being a musical straightjacket for Hansard was interesting too. Apparently Glen spoke about it in a Tribune interview last week? That slot was probably the best part of Toms show, with Clarkes and Carrolls input being the most interesting. I think Tom gave everything 3 out of 5, surely his ar*e must be sore from that fence by now. But yer wan Anne's contribution was non-existant. It's time we were told, what is she doing to justify her continued presence on the show...!!

"Doo do do doodo ... hmmmm". Jim Carroll also said nice things about the Hansard album on the arts show on Newstalk last Saturday (which is usually excellent, especially when Peter Crawley/Frawley is doing the reviews).

They reckoned the Frames are the one Irish band with the potential to do a Arcade Fire type Funeral on the next album i think its more likely to be funeral for the Frames.

funny how many cluas-ers listen to Pet Sounds after all.... as for fanning, dont get me started. has been a complete irrelevancy for many years but now sounds as if he is an embarrasment someone should give carroll and clarke their own show on some station - now that would be entertaining radio! calling phantom......

I like the film reviews on the George Hook show. I think it does work on radio. If you anyone wants to read an interesting book about broadcasting (radio and tv) in Ireland, I'd recommend Maverick by Bob Quinn.

All I can say is that the traffic show on Annalivia fm in the morning is so entertaining. I don't know the name of the dj but she manages to play some cracking tunes in between hilarious texts and messages about traffic in the city. It's really good. And they even support Irish bands. Lots of rock though - don't know if you'd call it all alternative. (What other station plays ac/dc at 8am?!) I like Dan Hegarty's show after midnight on 2fm, he always surprises me, not like the whelan's tape. There's something communal about listening to the radio..........
