How s**t is that? They were an excellent band, one of the most exciting things to come out of Ireland in a few years in my opinion.
    Terrible pity.

Only surprised by the time of it, I thought they'd get another album out.

The always seemed like a band that was made up of lead singers, each wanting a go. A split was inevitable.

I think in 2yrs time, there will be 3-4 bands around, with people in the audience saying "Didn't he used to be in that band ... The name escapes me. They were going to be huge .... AAAArggh, Its going to wreck my head for the reast of the night now"

They've confirmed it in a statement on their MySpace page click here :

"The Immediate is no more xx

We're sad to announce that The Immediate is splitting up due to existential differences.

We'd like to thank everyone who came to our shows and listened to 'In Towers & Clouds', everyone who loved or hated us, as well as anyone who helped us along the way... It's been a blast. Thankyou, sincerely.

We all still love each other.
    Regularly.

    Thankyou and goodnight,
    much love xx
    Conor, Dave, Pete, Barra"

Although I wasn't a fan (I think I was the only Irish reviewer to give their album a less-than-adoring review click here ) it seemed that they would be fairly successful abroad - I know that in France they had just sorted out a label and played some very well-received and well-attended concerts...

...although 'existential differences' sounds like something they may have picked up in some Left-Bank intellectual cafe in Paris

I think Mully has a fair point - maybe a band needs a leader, a focal point. In early communist Russia they tried having orchestras without conductors - it was a disaster.

    aye, existential differences. hmmm.

wasnt a big fan either, (well, at all really) but they did seem to have a good thing going, well received album etc, so kinda surprising.

Good band, but spot on about the front man starring role point,

very talented guys and the music was enjoyable, live shows were fab.

i think they will all show up in different outfits down the line, one of the few bands with no dead weight...

on another note, the angels of mons.....

i remember the singer, prat. thought he was the next thom yorke...

extremely boring band who had grand delusions....

"what ever happened to the angles of mons?"
could be the title of an album.....

I always thought that a better name for them would have been "All Chiefs, No Indians" or is that "All Indians, No Chiefs". Having been to their album launch, I am not surprised and have to say, my ears are somewhat relieved, still and all I wish them all the best in the future, suspect there is going to be a rash of adverts on Cluas that begin "Lead Singer seeks..."

The Immediate, in my opinion, were one of the best Irish indie bands around over the past five years. They were the only Irish band I ever saw or listened to that I thought had potential for international success, or an ability to make music that would stand up next to most critically acclaimed bands of their generation. It sucks that they've split up, but at least they left some good music behind.

From a post on a different forum ...

they were meant to tour in the US a few months back, but they day before they were due to leave one of the lads' fathers had a heart attack and died. Losing the tour was a serious blow to the band cos they'd been working up to it for some time, and the guy whose father died opted to pack it in altogether cos it was a bit much for him. After that, the momentum was gone and they called it a day.

Ah its always a shame to see a band call it a day just like that. Real pity. I was never a fan or nowt but they were doing realy well and seemed like nice blokes. Shame - but im sure we'll see them all in new projects soon.

I am gutted that it's over for them! I was a big fan. Their live shows were mind blowing. And off stage they are the soundest blokes you could meet. The only consolation is that they will excel at whatever they go at next. All four have serious talent. I believe Conor is going to keep writing and playing in some form and that in itself is something to look forward to.

There's optimism. Solo strands are almost never as good as the sum of their parts. Im struggling to think of any examples.

Crying Shame. This band was immenese, best band to come out of ireland in ages. Potential to be internationally recognised if not commercially, but then again, I don't think that was ever the plan. Sorry to hear it. I'm sad

Not a fan of many of these but seen as your struggling to think of "any" artists being "as good" here is a short example from an almost exhaustible list-
Faces and Jeff Beck - Rod Stewart
Ton Ton Macoute - Sinead o Connor
    Captain Beefheart - Ry Cooder
    Them - Van Morrison
The Beatles - Paul McCartney (and the rest)
    Genesis - Peter Gabriel
    Planxty - Christy Moore
    Led Zepplin - Robert Plant
Amboy Dukes - Ted Nugent(sold 35 million albums in case u don't know him)
    Heartbreakers - Tom Petty
    The Yardbirds - Eric Clapton
    Enough examples?

Sure I'm an optimist but the guys have potential and I never suggested just in a solo career anyway!

    Hmmm, ok

Faces and Jeff Beck - Rod Stewart
Rods early solo albums were practically Faces albums re-badged to launch a new solo career, everything after that doesn't stand up to the Faces best (who were fairly patchy anyway, I thought). Maybe a few tracks.

Ton Ton Macoute - Sinead o Connor
Could be, I don't know this band.

    Captain Beefheart - Ry Cooder
Ry Cooder released some good albums but never appraoched the downright inspired weirdness of Captain Beefheart, even compared to the relatively normal Safe As Milk. Besides, he was more of a hired hand than a band member. Is there any album he wasn't on back in them days?

    Them - Van Morrison
I prefer Them to Van, but you're probably right.

The Beatles - Paul McCartney (and the rest)
None of the four inidividual members came up with anything as great as the groups combined work. There's a good few tracks that could have sat easily on Beatles albums (even on McCartneys recent Choas & Creation…) but never an albums worth.

    Genesis - Peter Gabriel
Couldn't be bothered to argue this one

    Led Zepplin - Robert Plant
    Different? Yes. Better? ………..yes

Amboy Dukes - Ted Nugent(sold 35 million albums in case u don't know him)
Nugent is rubbish, the Amboy Dukes rock. 35 million people can be wrong.

    The Yardbirds - Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton was never better than when he was in a band with a leader. John Mayall's BB, Cream, Derek & the D's. When he was left to his own devices the quality control went downhill fast.

BUT you've got to remember that their average age is something like 23. Most bands probably wouldn't even release a debut LP until maybe 26-27... Their best years are yet to come.

And considering that IT&C is as amazing as it is (my favourite - not just Irish - album of last year), I've gotta side with Peejay.

I expect they'll all form new bands quick sharp, I doubt this is the last we'll hear of them. And you've got to love 'existential differences' as a reason for breaking up!

Great thorough response Peejay. But you've admitted it is possible for solo artists to exceed themselves after a split!. I don't see the lads going down the solo road anyway. As for "flipping burgers", no chance! The future is bright!!

I've no doubt we'll see all these lads again. I wouldnt be surprised if atleast 1 partnership remains after the split (Although I have nothing to base that on)

Thats a pity alright. I was really interested to hear what their second album would sound like, the first album while maybe a bit disjointed showed real potential and live they offered something different. Who does our hope for the future rest with now
