Good Lord, I never realised how bad Bell X1 were before last night. "Right, lads, Talking Heads are back in, let's try one that sounds like them. Between that and the Coldplay-y one we should be sorted." UGH.

I feel some more good words are needed about Rufus in this thread. To call him over-rated sounds ridiculous to me. In my opinion, not enough people know who he is, and a few years ago, two albums in and hardly anyone had heard of him. He is the most innovating singer/songwriter/performer I have come across in my life. His lyrics are honest, and he is an incredibly honest and down-to-earth person to boot. This is without even mentioning his voice. I can completely understand why some people find it irritating (he does drawl, and his diction is messy), but I love that he doesn't make an effort to perfect that. One can't deny that he is a fantastic singer. Any arrogance that comes across from him is done in a self-ridiculing type of way, and I find it very charming. As for his songs being "tuneless affairs", there are of course some songs that are more melodic and catchy than others ('The One You Love', for example), but those that are less so, are a compete indulgence in his voice. Die-hard fans like myself WANT (no pun intended) to hear stuff like that. His voice is his greatest asset. Rant over, I have work to do. xm

And, surprise, surprise...'Flock' is getting a lukewarm reception in the all-important UK music-press...'Rocky takes a lover' is good but the album as a whole is very weak...another example of a quite ordinary homegrown band being overly-praised in this country only to to met with general indifference when they try to break the UK,US etc....

Music In Mouth was well reviewed in the UK and it didn't do them any good either.

Music In Mouth had some really good tunes, but Flock is just so boring and dry. Antistar is quite right: "another example of a quite ordinary homegrown band being overly-praised in this country only to to met with general indifference when they try to break the UK,US etc...." They are very ordinary and about as progressive as McDowell.

They did. I was there the night they played and also the night before for BellX1, The Immediate, Hal, Nizlopi etc. and over the two nights Delorentos were a class above. Great tunes and they seemed to have the clearest idea of how they wanted to be perceived and exactly what they wanted to achieve from the whole experience... unlike myself who just pissed my pants, closed my eyes and sang. As you leave the back stage area, the last thing you see is a sign above the door that says, "Don't f**k Up!" The Immediate had some really good songs too but Delorentos just seemed more focused. Maybe it's the instrument swapping.

If you like bands that sound like a Lidl version Strokes, with a singer who looks like the guy from the Bravery swopping vocals with the guitar 'player' who, in turn, seriously sounds like he should be in the Rocky Horror picture show, then yes, they did giva a good account of themsslves!! But seriously, no.

Enjoyed last night's show more than the last few weeks, which I though weren't great! Thought Dave Couse and his band stole last night's show - great songs and brilliant musicians there! Also, the sound for Couse and TFC last night was much better than the last couple of weeks! Shows you the importance of knowing what you're doing I suppose!

Didn't think they showed enough of Teenage Fanclub or Delorentos.

yeah, another tune from TFC would've been good alright, would've preferred that than another Delorentos and Nizlopi song personally!

I hated Dave Couse's stuff. I thought the TFC interview was interesting when they were talking about their influences because normally when people cite influences (particularly a "cool" one like Sonic Youth) I just think they're full of it and just namedropping. However they were going on about the jangley stuff and Sonic Youth and then showed a song that actually reflected that. I thought Delorentos were good, but I usually do.

i caught the end of the last TFC song. was it The Concept? is it repeated? you just dont get enough TFC these days.middle-aged settled married guys who can still record great music after dropping the kids off at school.i didnt see the rest of the show, but i cant imagine delorentacouse being comparable. but i live in a tree so what do i know

kinda nasty there punchbowl. did they do something to dave couse? TFC were great, Sparky's dream sounded cool. the interview was good too, he seems very kinda, grounded, like you could go for a pint with him.

I thought the sound for Teenage Fanclub was atrocious. Utterly poxy. They're one of my favourite bands, but they were made to look like a BUNCH OF f**kIN' AMATEURS! Even Dave Couse sounded better. I presumed they only showed two songs because the Fannies walked off after two. That venue is a f**king joke. I've seen TFC on tv many times, and they've NEVER sounded as bad.

they played their full set of 6 tracks that night but the vocal line was so low in the mix that it was a strain to make it out, after two tracks a lady in the front row shouted up to them 'we can't hear your voice' to which norman blake replied, with a wry smile, 'yeah neither can i but that's television for you'
