dear all, attended sunday nights gig at vicar st. the man is pure magic!!!! as stated previously, the story telling would be lost in a larger venue and as this contributed so much to the evening it would have been a shame to miss out on it. the new material (musical& spoken) was 1st. class and lasted almost 2 hours, after a 15 minute interval the man was back on stage performing from his back catalogue, we thought we'd died and gone to heaven!!!! it was a wonderful, magical evening, more than we dared hope for. dublin is a wonderful cosmopolitan city and has changed greatly in the 27 years since my last visit needless to say it won't be 27 years till our next visit!! thanx dublin & vicar st. but mostly thanx to neil young for a truely superb evening.

last night was something special - personally speaking i really enjoyed the way the whole thing was handled by Vicar Street (no booze inside, no smoking, no leaving your seat unless you were prepared to wait outside til the end of the song)... i agree the price was prohibitive to some, no doubt about that but it also meant that only the hardcore attended the gig (personally i chose to ignore Slane in order to have funds to attempt to get a ticket and was one of the lucky ones that managed to do it) although i would stress to all promoters that such fees should only be reserved for those very special gigs such as this was. it occurred to me that Aiken promotions also built in lost booze revenue into the price. the GREENDALE saga was brilliant and Youngs voice has never sounded so good - and some of the guitar work is just too good for words - in certain ways i enjoyed the new material as much as the classics and definitely feel that i witnessed a landmark concept album (ALBUM! not just a collection of disjointed choons) in its infancy...

sadly, i reckon that probably wasn't the case. like the dylan show, i'm sure not a huge proportion of the tickets were actually made available to the general public. i imagine the guest list was phonebook size

Besides that i'm not sure that just because people are "hardcore" fans that they can ultimatly pay such a price or should have to for that matter. Its hardly like the contrary auld f**ker is on the breadline unlike some of his biggest fans...

all points are valid folks, but i think ya would've had to be there to understand where i am coming from... lets put it this way - because of the financial outlay involved it eliminated that portion who would buy a ticket because they "kinda liked Harvest or whatever and sure you wouldnt know who else will turn up" etc. etc. the same people who ruin most big outdoor gigs for me... yeah i know i sound full of sh1t, but i promise you 105 smackers hurt me in the pocket but i definitely got value for money outta the gig and i wouldnt swap that experience for a diluted one in the Point or wherever... as i said earlier though, promoters neednt think they can charge this kinda dosh for any oul event - thats the danger! (oh yeah, i reckon most liggers/djs etc. went to the sunday show and if they were there on tuesday, it didnt show as everyone was going mad)

I too was at the gig Tuesday night and it was worth every penny when I think of the money I have spent on gigs - esp for outdoor gigs - that are often an anti-climax (U2 and Red hot Chillies at slane being a major exception). 105 is reasonable for me considering I didnt have to spend 3 hours in traffic to get there or take a day off work etc...Plus having a table, a perfect view and with Mr Youngs voice in such perfect condition... I would love to see a songlist for the night so I can work out which of the songs from the Greendale section I liked so much plus just to relive the whole night again at home

As the person responsible for starting this thread which I'm reliably informed is cluas' longest ever, I feel that shows how passionate people are about the topic of ticket prices vs. the chance to see a living legend in action. Frankly, I think it's quite rare that such a cross could occur between legendary music vs. legendary prices (for all the wrong reasons that is) I've read some very interesting points and I am pleased that those of you who weren't "prohibited" by the price had the time of your lives and enjoyed the show, I'm sure I would be saying the same had I been there. Nevertheless, my initial view has not changed. The E100 euro mark has been broken very quickly and the disadvantage of this is that it will probably happen again in the very near future. I find this unacceptable and have read nothing that justifies charging such a sky-high price for a gig. It's an almost impossible hope that this trend doesn't continue. But I'm glad ye enjoyed the show Q2

fair enough Q2 - all i was saying is that the gig did prove value for money in my opinion and that i willingly sacrificed the green energy/slane/witnness for the opportunity to see the man in that environment. as for mccartney, wouldnt give him the steam off my piss - he's an annoying b*stard. so it all comes down to who you really really like. right enough though, if the show had been crapola i would've been on here giving out sh1t... i hope NY comes back and i hope you get to the front row :-)
