After all this time, he still uses a Juniper song (Me, My Yoke And I)

Very possible Dera, my initial reaction too. '9 crimes' but 10 songs - which one is innocent?

Where's Rev Jules to wade in with an unfunny diatribe against Mr Rice? This thread's been here a whole 90 minutes! He's losing it.

Seeing as the frames are floating his boat these days, maybe he's off tapping his foot to 'O' ...

9 Crimes alright.Call the cops!! The humour-free, pretentious egomaniac is back to make our lives a misery for the foreseeable future. '9'?? What the f**k is that supposed to mean? Yes, Dera I agree. It is possible to even hate the song-names especially when they are as ludicrous as 'Coconut Skins', 'Dogs' 'The Animals Were Gone' 'Me, My Yoke and I' WHAT????!!!! Oh Dear.

Ah here, this is a bit mad. I dont like the man's work but let's let him release the thing before tearing him apart, eh? How is "Dogs" a bad song title? It's one word! Is it somehow a worse word than "Maps" or "Mysteries"? Was anyone complaining about the album name "Seven Stabs" by the Rednecks?? If he called it "Damien Rice", there'd probably be something wrong with that too!

i dunno, i used to like the way people took the piss out of damien rice and 'o', but then they just started milking it. i mean, two years is a long time to keep going around taking the piss out of the same songs, get up off your comfy backside and come up with some new stuff already! so i for one am glad that '9' is finally due for release - already we have a whole new genre of rice-bashing, and all we've seen is the tracklisting! it's great, and so refreshing!

Hate to throw Cold Water (!) on this thread of disdain but I actually quite like his music. I listened to O (9, so where is 1, 2, 3...) hoping it would be terrible but found I grew to love the little monkey and his meandering warbling.

I'd say most people liked O when it first came out (about 10 years ago) but when you've got near every acoustic trouba-DOUR in the country hatcheting the songs there's only so much you can take. Plus, the whiff of pretension off the guy is unbearable these days...says he's got to be 'in' the song live ie. having a constipated face, extending the words and boring us all to tears. I remember the rumour of that Frames song 'Fake' being about Rice. I thought that was hilarious...just the image of Hansard kickin in Rice's front door...'where are ye, ye FAKE ye...leave my bird alone!!'

It actually took me a while to figure out if Gars post was a joke or if those were in fact the real track titles. I'm not kidding. For some bizzare reason, the mention of Coconut skins has that "kimberly, mikado, coconut creams.." jingle going round in my head now, dammit.

Maybe the guy just had a really bad case of writers block and he didnt wanna release something that he wasnt happy with! What does everyone care how long he spends writing an album? I liked '0' but when I got sick of it, I just stopped playing it. I didnt start chasing Mr. Rice down the street, kickin at his heels, taunting him 'wheres the new stuff Damo? huh??'. Im sure part of the reason he became a musician was to avoid the stress of your everyday jobs.. deadlines etc... Who are all you? His Record Company? Hes not asking anything of you but to sit and entertain yourselves with whatever music tickles your fancy and if a new album NEVER came about, then atleast he had 1 good 1! I havn't heard the new stuff and it may well be muck, but slaggin off the song titles is a bit pointless! And didnt most say that they liked '0' anyway? Then there should be nothing to complain about.

all hail the Cluas begrudgers - if anyone else took swipes at an artist and an an album BEFORE THE DAMN THING WAS EVEN RELEASED, there would be threads full of outrage and hurt. poor old damo rice - all he did was sell a couple of million copies of his album abroad and not have to rely on irish audiences for hi supper. lets wait until "9" is released, shall we, before unleashing the dogs.

I liked damo untill i heard the song he did with cristhy moore ,the diffrents in the two singers just completly turned me around ,That doesent take away from the fact hes a great performer with a some likeable songs and occasionaly great lyrics ... still not optimistic about his new album! that unplayed piano song was terrible .

I thought 'o' had the makings of a great ep, but it just falls over with Rice's head up his hole after 'Older Chests'. Track 6-10 are just self indulgent twaddle.

the lyrics for dogs were posted on his website 2/3 years ago. the guy is a classic case of cant write, cant sing, cant play, looks awful and comes across like a twat on stage and in interviews but hes fooled enough people to get dumped by renee, as I said before a motel in tijuana awaits him

don't you think it's even a tiny bit impressive for someone who can't write songs or play guitar, or sing, to become a songwriter and lead singer with a band, get a record deal (juniper), write and record a critically acclaimed, award-winning solo album, sell two million copies of it, and perform sell out tours around ireland, the uk, europe, australia and the us, all just by "fooling people"? man, he makes george bush look like an amateur. as for the motel in tijuana, i'd say you'd be far more likely to find him camping on the beach. i think "o" is a brilliant, beautiful album, but to be honest i'm not expecting too much from "9". i'll wait til i hear it before making my mind up tho.

    A) If ricecakes became President of the United States of America I would be impressed but, sorry, George W Bush outclasses him in every respect as an entertainer. B) I think the poor fella would catch his death if he camped on the beach C) Apparently, far more people die of coconuts falling on their heads than shark attacks so, if he does camp on the beach, please let it be somewhere with both coconut trees and shark infested waters.

Haha. Bush is a genius. I'll be sad when he steps down, one of the world's greatest entertainers, yet forced to go in his prime. The US needs to change the law and let him stay another term. I don't mind Rice at all, don't own any of his cds. Best of luck to him

well now you might find war, death, torture and pollution more entertaining than tousle-haired troubadours singing their songs, i can't argue with that cos it's just your opinion. however.... bush fooled just over 62 million people into voting for him, at a cost of around $372,000,000. damo (sorry, i do like nicknames, but 'ricecakes' just sounds a bit too gay for me) fooled 2 million people into buying his album and it didn't cost him anything. so on a purely financial level, he kicks dubya's ass. tijuana is nice and toasty during the summer, and during the winter i'm sure he'd have plenty woolly jumpers to keep him warm. as for coconuts and sharks, well, his head is apparently safe and sound up his own hole and he's made out of tofu. no problem. you'll have to try harder i'm afraid.

I'll tell you what I find funny Will Ferrell as George Bush http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_84VT6Gxd4 Be warned, you need a sense of humour to enjoy this and I think yours was surgically removed at birth, thus your ongoing defence of ricecakes Don't worry, I have a 12gauge shotgun* if the sharks and coconuts don't do the trick *NB: The 12 gauge shotgun in this post is a literary and metaphorical construct and not an actual firearm in the possesion of the author. No ricecakes were harmed during the writing of this post nor at any time afterwards. Any similarity between ricecakes and musicians of actual talent or ability is purely coincidental.

Jmc105, where you getting this info that Bush fooled 62 million people into voting for him? Yes, Florida was rigged in his favour but he was still in the race right up to that last state. And when he went up against John Kerry in the most recent election, he won fair and square. It's not about him fooling the American citizens - they wanted to vote for him (those that did vote at least) in the two elections that he stood in. Back to this thread though......Is no-one here looking forward to Damien Rice's new album?

the bould revlon reckoned that damien rice has achieved his level of success in spite of a lack of talent, not because he is talented. and that reminded me of bush. i don't consider the man competent to manage a starbucks franchise, let alone the united states of america. i was in denver during the 2004 election and watched the presidential debates. the contrast between kerry, who was able to address the issues he was asked about with intelligence, and bush, who ignored the questions in favour of saying what suited him (a familiar enough tactic round here incidentally) and still failed to construct meaningful sentences, was shocking. regardless of what your political or moral beliefs may be, how any sane, thinking person could entrust the running of their country to george w. bush is beyond me. just over 62 million people voted for bush in total, and i reckon that if they believe he is the best man for the job that somewhere along the line somebody must have brainwashed them. i am looking forward to the new album, but having heard some of his new material i'm not expecting it to be as good as 'o'. in spite of my lack of a sense of humour, and thanks for clearing that up it's such a relief just to finally know, i'll see your ferrell and raise you a black bush. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DprRG8uitwA

The last one was a letter. This one is a number. It's all so mysteriously profound. What can it all mean? Why 9 and not 8? Why O and not I? Boiled or fried? Is there a connection between the rise of Damien & condeleeza? Is condi the blowers daughter? What would uncle ben make of it all? It's all boil in a bag to me!

Nothing got to do with brainwashing. During those debates Bush gave straight answers on the core issues - Gay Marriage, Education, Defence, Health, War On Iraq - while Kerry tried to dodge them and be on both sides of fence. The majority of American voters will opt for the candidate who appeals to them on those issues. John Kerry was simply the wrong choice for the Democratic Party, because the American public felt (and opinion polls proved this throughout the election) that they couldn't trust him and didn't know what he stood for. With Bush, depsite his inability to speak well in public and not exactly being a great President first time round, they knew what they were getting. Anyway, let's leave the politics aside.

well as a neutral observer i couldn't believe the results when they came in. bush's record on health is atrocious, his defence policies are a sick joke (effectively spying on his own people, trying to redefine the word 'torture'), gay marriage was a smokescreen and the war in iraq was a mess from day one. the fact that kerry's answers reflected the fact that some issues were not simply black and white (eg stem cell research) may have made bush's responses seem more 'straight', but here's one i remember that sums up dubya's approach: quesion from dude in the audience: i feel like with the new laws allowing for my home to be searched without a warant and without my knowledge that my civil liberties as an american citizen are being eroded. bush: well, i hope you don't feel that way... i reckon that republicans vote republican, and always will. certainly from the people i spoke to who were voting for bush that was the reason they gave. plus the fact that america has never voted to change president during a war. and with the likes of karl rove pulling the strings, (attacks on john kerry's war record etc), as much as it defied common sense, i suppose in the end of the day bush getting re-elected was inevitable. i agree tho, let's leave the politics aside.

jesus. this thread is unreasonable, nasty and very shortsighted. damien rice is a talented musician, who has done remarkably well. he took extra time over stuff cos he is a perfectionist, why release a s**t second album too soon? isn't it better to wait and release a good one? i'm surprised at some of the normally quite fair posters on here. i'm not a fan of his music, i don't particularly care for his songs, and i don't see myself going to a gig, but i will give it a chance. :(

Lets get something straight W is not a stupid man, you may run a starbucks and be stupid, you may enjoy the music of damien rice and be stupid, you may even vote and be stupid, but you don't get to be The Chief by being thick, there are just too many smart people in the way. In fact he is a smarter man than both his father and Al Gore on these grounds alone. He learned from Clinton that playing the man of the people card is always a savvy move. Over here we look at Bush and think he is a hick but thats because of our own standpoint, experience and prejudices, but across America he is viewed as a salt of the earth guy, he plays up his goofyness. He reminds me of Sam Goldwyn who cultivated Charles Chaplin's dinner table send ups of him and made it his public image. Sam was a frequent dinner guest of George Bernard Shaw in London and GBS, regarded as one of the rudest men in London, once reported that Sam had perfect english but enjoyed the anecdotes of his mangled phrases. Thats the closest GBS ever got to a compliment. Bush aint any different, he saw an image that played to a larger section of the voting public than his rivals and went for it, and he hoodwinked fundamentalist christians that he was one of them too, even though his standpoint on many things is no more radical than that of the Roman Catholic church. If George W Bush rang against Bil Clinton, who would win, I would think that would be a hard one to call.

ah in fairness now, i mentioned bush in passing, i had no interest in getting into a debate about the man. fair enough, you think he's playing a role, and he does have certain amount of charm, which he uses to good effect. i think his lack of intelligence is painfully obvious, and that without a combination of his ex-president daddy, his brilliant campaign managers, a seriously dodgy election in 2000, the war in iraq, a poor 2004 campaign by the democrats and a willingness on the part of millions of americans to vote for along party lines, he wouldn't be president today. i wouldn't go so far as to call him stupid, but compared to someone like clinton, (wasn't he a rhode's scholar?), he ain't smart. came across an interesting report on the iq's of the last twelve american presidents recently, which places george w last with an iq of 91. clinton was top with 182. http://www.lovenstein.org/report/

I dont think that proves anything, c'mon now, quoting an anti-bush website which has no real evidence for their claims. As for the new album, well Gar, in the absence of any tracks to listen to, I'd say it proves that being able to count is not one of Ricecake's skills, there are 10 songs listed and the album is called '9'?

gar - it's hard to talk for very long about an album that hasn't come out yet and no-one has heard anything from. rj - first read about that report in "de paper", then came across it online, had a closer look today and you'll be happy to hear that it's all a hoax. or rather, it started as an email joke which sounded real enough to fool some journalists, who published it, the silly things. http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/lovenstein.html maybe i'm misunderestimating the poor man, maybe there's really a keen intellect hiding in there somewhere, but i've watched him say and do so many things that remind me of homer simpson that i really don't think so. surely damien rice's counting skills, going by your logic anyway, were shown up years ago, when "o" turned out to have any tracks at all on it?

I know, just trying to steer the thread back towards it's original purpose - because it was probably my fault that it went all political.

Bush isn't stupid? Seriously? Have you listened to any of his speeches? The guy is hilarious, I love the man, but to say he isn't thick? You get to be President in the US through money, simple, absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. Look who is running California. 'President Bush: Peter. Are you going to ask that question with shades on? Peter Wallsten of the Los Angeles Times: I can take them off. Bush: I'm interested in the shade look, seriously. Wallsten: All right, I'll keep it, then. Bush: For the viewers, there's no sun. Wallsten: I guess it depends on your perspective. Bush: Touché'

Classic, I knew it was dodgy if jmc105 was using it to back himself up. Now, is 'O' or '0', a numeral or a letter, i haven't explored ricecakes enough to know, but if it was indeed a numeral then the album should have been blank, which would have made it much better to listen to indeed

What a load of rubbish! How can you guys slate an album based on the tracklisting. Seriously, you don't have to like the guy to be willing to at least listen to the record before having a go at it. For what it's worth Zane Lowe played the 9 Crimes single as his "hottest record in the world" on Tuesday and it sounded pretty good to me. Like the first time I heard Cold Water on 'O', shivers down the spine stuff. Will it be as good as O? I don't know, but jaysus, I'll at least wait until I've heard the bloody thing before making my mind up.

How important is a song title to the quality of the song? I must have missed that decision, I really should pay more attention in meetings.

Gar just stuck it up to show off that he's 'in the know' enough to get a press release emailed to him. big swinging mickey. and jules do you contribute anything to this site apart from frothing at the mouth about damien rice and that vanity piece moonlighting as an opinion column?

Jaysus, a lot of spite in this thread, fantastic stuff. Can't wait for Jule's reply. I think Gar posted it on cluas because he's is one of Ireland's most succesful singer writers...Rice, not Gar, although Gar has a lovely voice. And cluas is an irish site thus worth discussing as the previous four pages attest to.

Well, I'll answer this one at length, but I also specialise in winding up people like you, and it works every single time, fish - barrel - dynamite. I mean its a discussion board, and yet, when the discussion goes in a direction you dont like you throw your toys in the air and start whining and then there is a bunch of random personal abuse. But at the end of the day, all I care about is that the discussion board stays entertaining, readable and quotable, which it is, and if I have to be the target of someone's ire in the process, so be it

Yet, strangely, John Cale never wrote a song called Sleep Don't Weep ;) You understand that the song titles thing is, er, tongue in cheek, right?

look we all know you don't like Damien Rice - you hijack every thread with a trace of his name and start ranting and mouthing off. i don't like him or listen to him either but i still don't feel compelled to incessantly bleat on about how s**t he is. I just find this anti-rice crusade of yours a bit odd and very tiresome. that's all.

Have to say I kind of agree with Ctrlaltdelete about the amount of vitriol stemming from Jules and others on this thread. I'm a relative newbie, but the nature of the remarks come across as quite damning and would nearly make some people afraid to post what they think. Also, very little's been said about the music - it's all about the man and the song *titles* for chrissake! Yes everyone's entitled to air their opinions, but if you've made it clear that you hate an artist for whatever reason, and have stated that, several times, it might then be ok to stay a little quiet when others are discussing the music in postive/objective/just other light. I run a forum myself that's busier than this, and it's strongly negative posts like Jules' (and others too) which can really make it go off, create ructions on and off line, and send posters away. a.

really, it's not hard to find evidence to back up the premise that bush is lacking in intelligence - it's not exactly a controversial claim these days - which is probably why that phony (and funny) iq report wound up in the newspapers. i could point you to a host of video clips and interview transcripts, but i'm sure you more than capable of finding them on your own. some dodgy track titles alright, but in the end of the day the name of a song is probably the least important thing about it. ctrlaltdelete - the real reason for the rice-bashing is that some people just don't like him. and there's no point in attempting to have a discussion about that, because, as rev jules and dera said, there's too much interest in trying to wind people up, or in exploring the insides of cheeks, to make discussions of topics like damien rice worthwhile, or even possible, around here. by the way rj, i've got another bear song for you: cross-eyed bear, you'd love it!

interesting point yoshimi. when i first started posting on here i made the mistake of defending damien rice, which didn't go down too well at all. things got a bit out of hand in my opinion, and if i wasn't such a stubborn f**ker, and if it wasn't for the fact that there are plenty of interesting, fair-minded people using this forum too, i wouldn't have stuck around. i think you just have to make allowances for certain people, and don't think twice about saying what you think. the more people using this forum, with their own voices and opinions, the better.

Haha. Bush is a genius. I'll be sad when he steps down, one of the world's greatest entertainers, yet forced to go in his prime. The US needs to change the law and let him stay another term. I don't mind Rice at all, don't own any of his cds. Best of luck to him
Bush's dad drove past me in a little caddy car surrounded by a 4 man goon squad detail from the US secret service on Friday. He waved at me twice, I automatically waved back, which is probably a testament to how my mother raised me becasue giving him the finger didn't even enter my mind when it happened.
