Probably don't need to be posting this as a new topic but, hey! i'm excited at the prospect of seeing Howe Gelb in Whelan's next week. Love his last album and all of the Giant Sand back catalogue as well as his AAAA stuff with M Ward, Grandaddy to name but two associated luminaries. Have never seem him live. Anyone see him perform before? Heard that he's a bit of a character (who couldn't guess from his tunes!) and that he is prone to stopping in the middle of songs and going off on tangents and telling stories - this, in my opinion, does not seem like a bad thing although it might be frustrating. Can i get some love for Howe Gelb? (no he hasn't called me and asked me to bring "chicks" for the after-show party )

i'm going to this gig... and not because i love howe gelb but because he appears to be a gaping hole in my music knowledge (i.e. someone i should have listened to and formed an opinion on ages ago)... ...so, see you there

I have seen him play with the gospel choir, and it was a real treat. He is a real showman and you just have to warm to him, so can't wait for the Whelans show. Bring it on

Oh yeah. Bring it on for sure. You don't know if he's turning up on his own or if there'll be a band? Read reviews of that mini gospel tour he did in the UK and it seemed great. Only a few days to go, it'll be classico

Okay peeps? What did ye make of the show in Whelans last night? Personnaly, i thought it was brilliant. Very entertaining, interesting sounds from those pedals of his and quite the accomplished musician as well as wordsmith. Nice crowd there too. Everyone was into it and not too packed.

great gig, i've seen him before a couple of times and this was his most focussed gig, really liked that pj harvey tune he did (anyone know which album of hers its on?) and basically everything he played was brilliant, looking forward to his collaboration with isobel campbell.

And it seems there's a Giant Sand album in the can too! Great tune that he wrote for Campbell though. Is she worth checking out? I know the album with Mark Lanegan got great reviews but i didn't really pass much heed on it. Don't know the PJ Harvey tune i'm afraid although a trawl of allmusic.com might yield results.
