Just saw this on bbc4.'twas pretty good.Really enjoyed Zoe Rahmon's performance. She was outstanding. Kind of predictable that the Artics would get the prize. Fair play to them.

Good album. Delighted for them. My pick of the rest would have been Richard Hawley.

It's supposed to be for the best album of the year. Whatever People Say... deserved to be on the shortlist, it's a good album, I'm a fan. But it wasnt the best of the year. Guillemots, amongst others, was better.

as biased as I may be I really was hoping Hawley would win, either him or The Guillemots. I just happen to think the Artics are overated greatly, and they acted like total d**ks in the interview afterwards.

Didn't they come out with something witty like 'call 999, Hawley was robbed' only later to say we deserved it, was the best record. Can't see people listening to it this time next year

yep, absolutly, on the plus side I read somewhere that Hawley's album is so far today selling the most out of all the nominees, a 368% increase in his sales or something to that effect. I remember going to see him play to a couple of hundered in Whelans and earlier this year to a couple of thousand in The Shepherds Bush Empire, and now he will hopefully go on from there, The guy is as genuine and as sound as can be and thats as much of a reason why I hoped he win,and I know he wont be one bit bothered at not winnning last night btw.

I'm sorry but, to me, The Artic Monkeys just sound like Jilted John, you know "Gordon is a moron / Gordon is a moron"

I would have given it to either Hot Chip or Isobel Campbel & Mark Lanegan.

It's ArCtic Monkeys, for fcuk's sake!! What is the point of this award? Music is totally subjective and always will be.It's not about awards.Competition should be kept out of art. So this is the best album by an Irish/Uk act from the past year or so? So all the other hundreds, maybe thousands of albums released are somewhat inferior to this?? Utterly nonsensical, a complete waste of everyone's time.

The man's a legend. He's being releasing quality albums for the last five years completely under the radar. Of course all such "competitions" are subjective but the Mercury list for each year is usually a pretty damn fine list. OK, you might think there are some obvious ommisions and you might not agree with the winner but if you bought no other albums in a particular year other than the Mercury list, it'd be a good haul, I reckon.

I thought Hawley was super at the picnic, super songs, super band and fabulous presence on stage. I particularly enjoyed the jam of Interstellar Overdrive towards the end. I was disappointed he didnt win but am delighted the nomination gave him such exposure.

Yeah, i agree with the Hawley-ites. Would really liked to have seen him winning it. He's a sound man and i'm a big fan of his music. Saw him in Whelan's a while back and he was great craic and put on a fabulous show finishing up with a balls out rockabilly cover of "It's all right Mama."

he told me off for slagging Mundy before, apparently they are good mates, but dont let that put you off, his stuff is truly excellent, he's the find of the last few years for me.

what's wrong with that jilted john song?... in fairness, it was great... it's only the continous appearances on watered down crap punk compilations that have diluted it over the years... ...that said, i'm not sure the arctic monkeys have written anything as good as it

According to cursory glances at various websites it seems Hawley's album sales have increased by 330%! Now that's what i call a pay-rise.

Ill be honest theres some great songs on the album but its not one ill be listening to in a year or so, arcade fires funeral is still a fantastic nearly two years on, guillemots have some great songs but alot of filler to be honest, hawley was good but its probally the first time the mercury awards have gone for mainstream usually they pick some f**king random album justy to be different!!!

I would have given it to Hot Chip too, but in a way Hawleys come out the real winner out the whole thing hasn't he? He still gets all the kudos, a massive increase in record sales and doesn't get lumbered with the curse of the mercury prize either.
