Was listening to the Ian Dempsey breakfast show this morning and he played the new Rags single. It is top drawer which is really surprising because before this they were a band that I never rated. Trying to find the single online but it is seriously good. anyone else heard it?

Cool - thanks for that. The video is on there for it, half way down the page. Song is two minutes long. Absolutely class - in my opinion of course. Might go see them in Whelan's.

Cool video aswell......should get some airplay on Channel 6 pretty soon. Glad to see the band coming back with decent new tunes, after the previous split rumours.

Awful, turgid, retrograde sub-Coral/Oasis rubbish. The lead singer has copied wholesale his slightly arrogant swagger and vocal style from Liam Gallagher. No-one does this anymore. Well maybe apart from that chap that fronts Kasabian. The video is even worse: looks like a final year project from some spotty student on one of those 'Video and Media Production' courses. And a bad one at that. The only enjoyment to be gained from this video is to have a game of spot-the-cliche: the white boards with snippets of the lyrics a la the iconic Bob Dylan video for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" ; passing landscape/houses filmed from a vehicle of some sort (very easily done, always effective when you have run out of ideas, or had none in the first place);Rooftop setting for band performance; grainy Hi8 film-stock. Boring.

i had the me and the moon ep... ...it was ok... this song is ok, too... it's the kind of song you're more than happy to listen to if it comes on a daytime radio show whilst your driving your car... i won't be buying it and i won't be listening to it at home where i get to choose what i listen to

To be honest I find most Irish bands quite dull, highly derivative and sorely lacking in imagination. But there are a few I like: Director, NeoSupervital, Galway's The Ghostwood Project are the best thing I've seen in ages...Republic Of Loose but I think they should ease off sucking Vodafone's corporate cock, (keeps them off the dole, I suppose). Love Ten Speed Racer but now sadly defunct as are Tycho Brahe (I think), another great Irish band. I think in this country we are too quick to 'big-up' bands that are very mediocre. I'm just being truthful by saying about 80 percent of Irish acts are pretty hopeless.Like The Rags.

I saw a post on Thumped yesterday referring to Carol (ex-Tychos). As for the Rags, Monsters and I wasn't bad but it's not something I'd buy. For some reason I got a perverse kick out of hearing it being used to shill Campbell's Soup, stuck out like a sore thumb.

Razors and Ropes, YOU people ARE jokes... Antistar, your avin a laf. Its a quality single, quality choon. Its been picked single of the fortnight in Hot Press (Their 3rd release in a row to be given this honour.) To get song of the week on Ian Dempseys show (again) is only an indication of whats to come from the lads. They've had to deal with a band member leaving and have come back with a bang if ya ask me. So the lead singers got a bitta swagger about him....So wha? What do ya want? More shoe gazing s**te? Nah, bitta confidence, put on a bit of a show. He knows he's good and people are realisin that. There the only unsigned band to play at Leccy Piccy... And give the video a break will ya. The lad shot it in and edited in about a day. Credit where credit due if ya ask me. What do ya want?...Smooth Dolly shots, chris cunningham edits? You stick on some Director there...chill out a bit. Good Luck to yis Rags...Bring on EP!

ok i'll be honest, i've lurked this forum for a good while now, interested to read what people think of our "irish music scene", but never really been arsed registering, because i knew i'd end up disagreeing with absolute idiots like this one...<see above> fair enough he's entitled to his opinion, but when he slates irish bands across the board as being "dull, highly derivative and sorely lacking imagination" and THEN cites DIRECTOR as a band he sees fit to namecheck as an exception, i nearly fell off my chair in a fit of laughter, until i realised how angry it made me. why make a statement like that, then completely contradict yourself by praising the embodiment of what it is that "irks" you so? director are a prime example of everything he despises, they epitomise being dull and derivative in one foul swoop, with sub-par franz and strokes rip-offs (which wouldnt be so bad if it wasn't obvious that the songs have been written in such a contrived "i know the science behind a hit pop song" way, with absolute no passion or art to be found at all) and the most gutless live sets i've ever had the misfortune to see. he goes on about frontmen too, and whatever he thinks about the rags guy, the singer from director is the worst frontman i have EVER seen. he has absolutely zero stage presence and less charisma than my old maths teacher, not to mention his ridiculously boring vocal style which never leaves the same safe, stupidly interpol-esque monotonous range that those other twats in that band Editors are so fond of. he looks like a f**king estate agent too, which doesn't really bother me, but i'm sorry to say that the market these boys are being so painstakingly groomed for, is very much about image. that band are the most cynical, contrived and gutless offering to try and get in the pages of NME this country has seen in years. if he thinks 80% of all irish indie is s**t, and can't even come up with any worthy mates (sorry, did i say mates, i meant bands) to offer as the other 20% then surely an irish indie music discussion board isn't the place for him? stick to pitchfork and whatever else is pretentious enough for you mate.

sailtothemoon is spot on about Director. They're at least 2 years too late to make it. I suppose that's the problem with trend-oriented outfits. By the time they've digested what's "in", written the songs, got signed, spent the advance, spent months in the studio...two years have gone by.

I have to agree about director.. seen em a couple of times now, but i just thought that as Flux was saying, if they had arrived two years ago they could have jumped in with the other bands doing the same thing..ie getting a bowl, and adding a touch of morrisey,a sprinkle of joy division and just a pinch of Mix 80s spice and coming up with a few tunes. Two years ago they could have joined the bandwaggon, now it just looks like they are copying the others... Had to walk away from them at oxegen they began to annoy me so much.

i just checked out the rags single and i think its actually really good, i like the lyrics especially, and the vocal performance is great. as a 3 minute indie pop single, it's a lot better than a lot of the rubbish NME is force-feeding us on their chart. and as for the video, which antistar so gleefully picked apart, i think its a decent effort. remember not everyone has a Major behind them pumping money into their press, promo and videos (*cough* Director) and despite being low-budget,it serves as a good companion to a good single.

I disagree about all of the comments regarding Director. A band doesn't always have to sound like another established act and alot of the time they don't try to sound like other bands. The way alot of the posts have gone so far would suggest that Director are a manufactured band copying the likes of Editors and Interpol - this is just a lazy observation. So what if they got a big record deal. So what if Vodafone use one of their songs in an ad. So what if the NME like them. So what if Ian Dempsey and whoever else plays them on mainstream radio. Sometimes it's okay to like a band for their music. They have a number of cracking tunes, tend to put on a good live performance and are showing promise of developing into an act that could really make waves outside of this country. Fair play to them and looking forward to hearing the album.

i never begrudged the fact that they have a big record deal (congratulations) or their involvement in advertising campaigns (easy money, well done) or the fact that Ian Dempsey plays them (it's obviously serving acts like The Rags well) or even the fact that NME "likes them" (news to me!)...whereas i don't think it's lazy to say they sound like they are ripping current "trendy" bands off, i think it's blatant and a relevant point. all this makes for a band i really dislike , but you know fair play, good crack of the whip and all that, it'll stand well for them when no-one remembers them in two years etc etc etc...

Of course 80% of Irish bands bands are s**t, 80% of all bands are s**t regardless of nationality. Go into HMV and see how many crap records are on the shelves. The bad far outnumber the good. The Rags new single is grand (It's nothing spectacular but it's not atrocious either) but if they weren't Irish we wouldn't be talking about them. I wish them the best of luck but they'll have to improve drastically if they're going to make any impact outside of their local scene. I am only judging Director on the strength of one single but it's one of the best Irish singles that I've heard in quite some time. I know that they sound somewhat similar to Interpol and Editors but it could be worse, they could sound like Hard Fi or My Chemical Romance or some other heap of sh*t. And as for Cluas being an "Irish indie music discussion board", I was under the impression that Cluas was a message board for Irish people who like Music of all persuasions and not just the homegrown variety.

Morning, I just heard The Rags playing there new single live on the Ian Dempsey show and i thought it was really good. I have never heard the band before and i have to say i like it. Maybe its the song that started this thread, "razors and ropes" was the name. The guy Dan from the band explained before the song that its about the amount of suicide in Ireland. Maybe its still way too early in the morning but the song has changed my mood for the day and any song that does that is worth its salt. Fair play Ragboys.

I saw Sick Boy play on Saturday night and I thought they were fantastic. 1 part stooges + 1 part cramps + 1 part looking like they actually f**king mean it and aren't in it for the skinny jeans = Superradness. A couple of guys called the Straglers were playing before them and they were very good too.
