This is bordering on complete snobbery but may be interesting to see what names people throw out for this. I'd say The Streets and New Order.

Seconded, and any reasonably popular Irish band, if I want to go see the Frames I'll buy a ticket for one of their gigs. Seeing local bands taking up top festival slots here is a bit of a cop out on the part of the bookers.

i don't want anyone big (commercially) whatsoever... the tickets will then be snapped up by fans of that band / artist therefore diluting the vibe... examples - prince was being bandied about - he's far too big, new order and pet shop boys may swamp the festival also... i'd go as far as saying i don't want morrisey for the same reason (although that's pushing the boat out a bit)... i'd be a fan of the frames but i'd hate to see them announced with 10,000 frames fans flocking to laois if they're going to be of the calibre of the recent point gig audience

The Bodytonic tent could do more that just house the usual superstar dj suspects and a bit of hip-hop. A real eclectic electronic line-up would be far more interesting. Don't want to see too many nostalgia acts like The Human League either. Hopefully the delay in releasing the line-up means they're putting a bit of thought into it and not just grabbing the dregs of the festival season. I'd rather the prospect of seeing lots of bands i hadn't seen before, than big headline acts who've been doing the rounds for ages.

To be fair to the bodytonic lads, they are the biggest supporters of irish djs in the country. Every week Irish djs play at their clubs. Would hope EP stays away from any big name band that would attract throngs of fans that would dilute the atmosphere for the rest of the day they are on. I would go along with all of Antistar's suggestions tho

There are legitimate reasons why these bands should not be allowed play. It's nothing to do with snobbery. The Frames play this country so many times that surely their own fans are getting sick of them now! I've seen Primal Scream twice and they are rubbish live. Snow Patrol are too formulaic, bell X1 too dull, etc, etc....too many bands out there simply going through the motions, too many bands that offer nothing new to seasoned gig-goers...What was great about last year's EP was Kraftwerk being included in the line-up.They just stood motionless behind their laptops, unsmiling, no interaction with crowd yet it was one of the best gigs I've ever attended. I hope to have a similar experience at EP '06. Somehow I don't think Bell X1 are going to provide it.

I'd love to see The Streets. Mike Skinner is one of the best UK artists ever. There's some stuff being said here that I really don't understand. How could people NOT want Prince to be there? That would make it the best festival ever! I don't want s**t bands. I want good bands that I like. Returnees I would like to see would be: Be Your Own Pet JJ72 Nick Cave Flaming Lips Arcade Fire Kraftwerk The Pricillas Silent Disco One thing I don't want is the comedy tent. What a waste. Put on more music instead.

Always harboured a secret desire to organise a micro-festival. I ask myself how difficult can it be organising a venue, contacting my favourite bands' managers, sponsorhip, advertising etc. I'm sure it's much more difficult than i think. Anyway, i agree with the insipid and ubiquitous Irish bands listed above. I suppose between all there different festivals there's a perfect line up if one could pick 'n' mix acts and shuffle them around.

"insipid and ubiquitous " thank you for bringing these words to my attention. i could have lived a whole lifetime and never knew they existed. I have to say Mike Skinner has totally lost the plot.

una, the reason i don't want prince there is that as soon as he's announced, 25,000 prince fans will snap up the tickets (for his day at least) in approximately 15 seconds... your average prince fan has probably never heard of arcade fire, let alone someone like nurse with wound... the good time vibe would be completely goosed... people would be chatting over everything and there would be some seriously empty tents

The Streets are dreadful live. Made a tit of himself when he played witness a few years ago slipping the word Guinness into his lyrics. I wanted to kill him. His schtick doesn't translate well to the stage

Nurse with Wound won't be playing. But it'd be nice to have some earshock, like Boris or Merzbow or Wolf Eyes. Something we never have at festivals here. Oh, and I wasn't really dissing the Bodytonic lads for their DJ selections, I would just like to see some 'live' electronic music as opposed to DJs having a rinse. Might not appeal to those who want to take jiggers all weekend, but would make the tent more interesting.

"your average prince fan has probably never heard of arcade fire" so? Hmm, that JJ72 'joke' is a bit missfired - have you seen any of their recent gigs? Or even the gig at EP last year? Or, perhaps tracks from the new album? Hardly a 'comedy act'. Then again, slagging them seems to be a national sport, so it would be a shame to see that discontinue...right? I understand the complaint of having tickets snapped up by Prince fans, but it's not difficult to get tickets if you're quick off the mark anyway. In a perfect world, Prince would play and there would be free Electric Picnic tickets for all! I remember that Streets gig when Skinner kept saying 'Witness Is In This For One More Pint Of Guinness', I thought it was funny, but maybe you had to be wasted to see the humour. Actually, that particular gig was absolutely brilliant in my memory, but opinions differ I guess. At Oxegen last year, the gig wasn't the best at all, because I think he was out of it on stage and the crowd reacted badly, and the sound was s**tE because it was the main stage, so obviously, everything sounded like a f**king broadcast from a Fien Gael councillor shouting election plans through a megaphone attached to the roof of a clapped out Ford Orion, if you weren't in the pit. Anyway. The moral is, I like Prince and I like The Streets. Kind Regards, Una

There's no bordering about it! Palace, you can't expect a festival to revolve completely around your personal tastes. If there were no big name acts, they wouldn't sell any tickets. There has to be a balance between commercial and critical interests. And besides, what harm if people come just to see one act - they might be turned on to a few less famous bands, or is that what you're afraid of?

You dudes are all so snooty! Still, I'd have to agree with yee. But, would Prince playing be such a bad thing? Like, the only people I know who like Prince are big big music fans. If you say Prince to anyone who isn't mad for music, generally the reaction you get is one of bemusement, usually followed by a comment like "yeah, he had his ribs taken out so he could......." I don't think having Prince on the bill would lead to swarms of Flannery's frequenters descending on Laois.

Oh, The Streets, s**t but you know it. Prince, saw him play the RDS years ago, he was middling live (sorry, but its true) Ryan Adams, I'd rather stab hot forks in my ears than listen to him.

s**t, i better defend myself... ...of course ou need commercially viable acts to play but there's a fine balance... lets take last year - nick cave, arcade fire, kraftwerk, flaming lips - these are all acts that can be considered big without being behemoths of pulling power... anyone who appreciates a certain kind of music (i.e. contemporary slightly left-field) would give these artists the respect they deserve and be genuinely interested in seeing them.... prince does not fit in to this category - he will bring a swarm of his own fans, some who admittedly will be in to the rest of the festival, others who i guarantee will not - there are a lot of prince fans who are the non-frequent once a year gig going types... ...i aint tryin' to be a music snob / controversial / in to my own opinion... i'm just saying what i believe would work best for the festival - there's only 25,000 a day - this isn't glastonbury

Oh yes! Yo La Tengo would be super. Saw them play at The Ambassador a few years ago (on a Sunday or Monday night) having caned it that weekend at a wedding in County Clare. Wasn't exactly in the best frame of mind but they rocked, shi**y venue aside. Love the 3CD "Prisoners of Love" best-of and value for money with a capital V. One objection. I think The White Stripes would be a great act for EP. Saw 'em live in Keyspan Park, Coney Island and they were incredible.

yeah, that's a great wishlist of punchbowl's although note there are no big enough bands to ruin the vibe... i agree that ep is about breaking down barriers but there are good ways to do that... having prince there is not one of them for all the reasons i've stated above... i'm sure you get where i was coming from?...don't you? *for prince, substitute rolling stones or eminem or red hot chilli peppers or paul mccartney or madonna etc... - not the quality mind, just the quantity*

You know, often the guy/gal with the great taste in music is often the most annoying prick of all. Some of the soundest, craic-laden people have s**te taste. Sometimes I might rather stand beside a Frames fan pissed up on booze than a loud music snob. Remember the cinema line in Annie Hall?

You know who you are. Or DO you....? I agree that certain acts are always gonna attract higher percentages of "undesirables" but when it comes down to it, your off in a field with your mates in the sun (hopefully) with your pick of great/interesting music all around you. There'll be arseholes there every year. And when I found myself in festival limbo last year while Bluntmaster was on, I went and got me a pie. I got tix 3 weeks ago knowing it'll be fun regardless of the line-up.

Don't know if they never play on stage, but they definately like being at the centre of a maelstrom. You're going to ATP, yeah? Keep an eye on them. The last one they played, they did their scheduled gig and another one later on, underneath a tree outside some chalets. Gonna catch them myself in Leap, Cork in May.

palace,i dont think there is such a thing as 'your average prince fan'.there are not enough huge prince fan's ,i would say, to warrant them being a stereotype.he would definitely add to any festival, having that 'lots of songs everyone knows and can party to' vibe and also the 'look,up there, its an important part of music history and not just the latest chancer' vibe. I think there are certain artists that anyone who is into music as an art should want to see, whether directly being a fan or not,and the short-arse hendrix is one!

diego, maybe i'm a bit out of touch with prince but the last time i remember him playing a gig in scotland (where i lived), he sold out murrayfield stadium... the only people i knew who went to that were 4 girlfriends who go to about one gig every two years and who love jim diamond, james last and david gray - if he were to play ep, they would turn up at about 6.30 on the day, watch no one else, then watch prince and then go home... ...now, that's not to say prince ain't produced some great music - he has... maybe i'm getting clouded by that - maybe prince means something different these days... that's all beside my point anyway, the point being - "an enormous commercial selling act would ruin the vibe"

Punchbowl - do you have Pulp on yer list cos you've heard something???? I've heard Jarvis Cocker has a new album coming out soon (Not the Relaxed Muscle stuff, but his own) but have you heard about some Pulp re-formation??!!!!
Actually, No. I had heard rumours of some solo stuff but ddn't think it was anywhere near completion.. That would be cool indeed. I'd still much prefer a full on Pulp reunion. It will eventually happen but it might be too soon..

palace, i just dont think Prince would be on your average radio listeners radar in a big enough way to cause a tumult of tossers laoiswards. It would be the icing on the cake for a large amount of the serious music fans who are already going,a chance to see a legend should never be turned down.what if he dies of short next year?? what if i was in the shower and i slipped on a bar of soap!! oh my god id be dead! i accept your point with an act like Blunt,Gray,Chilis,Eminem but not with Prince................................dont you want to party like its 1999!

I heard a while ago (not that I was meant to tell anyone, but f**k it) that Prince was due to do some kind of secret gig in Vicar Street. I heard it a couple of months ago and nothing ever happened. But now that he's promising gigs, it might be one to keep an eye on.

The last time he was here he played shed loads of instrumentals etc at a gig in the point. Afterwards he headed to spirit and played for 3 hours and charged an extra 70 quid

Hey, maybe he won't even play and we can all look back and laugh about this. The divisive little tart.
